The story of this mix—and the music within—goes back to 2017 and the Origins of Entropy festival, deep in the Australian doof bush. Sunday’s daytime curation included on the lineup music of a kind I had never heard before—what one dirty hippy described to us as Intelligent Dance Music. (Wanky name, I think everyone agrees.)

At the time, I was a filthy bush psytrance fiend and wasn’t that impressed by the bizarre, many-tempoed, hard-to-follow, and intricate music. Little did I know it planted a seed that would come to blossom in time.

Fast forward to April 2025. I’ve been around the block when it comes to music genres—living in Germany has certainly been a big part of that. If it’s good, I probably have a playlist somewhere on my hard drive of ripped YouTube mp3s for that after-hour timeslot when melodic house makes a surprise reappearance, to (hopefully) everyone’s delight. My core love, however, is still psychedelic music that transports us somewhere else or pulls us to dance. But having played and record-dove for close to ten years within such styles, naturally my taste and interests have evolved.

This set is the culmination of those changing tastes. Having stumbled across the legendary Max Cooper on my aural travels earlier this year—and even catching one of his spectacular audio/visual shows in Frankfurt—I started looking for more of this emotional, deep, strange music that had started evoking so much in me. The record diving took me back to long-dead Facebook pages—namely, the event page for the 2017 Origins of Entropy all those years ago. One comment of thanks stayed with me: “Special mention to Rob Clouth for opening up that absolute wormhole on Sunday!” I had a name—and as they do, names lead on to magical places and beyond.

It’s taken me almost a year to collect (all this music is bought—support your artists, people!), arrange, and finally mix this set. I have never undertaken anything in my time as a DJ that has proved so challenging. Normally I just jump on the decks, play a favourite opener, and let the mood and energy of the crowd drive my setlists. Not this time.

Pretty much every track needed its place—cue points for smooth mixes, energy maintenance, and a plan to adjust BPMs and keys to fit them together. Along the way, I discovered an unknown tendency I have toward perfectionism (just in a few aspects of my life). Hence the set’s title: perfection is unobtainable. Eventually one must move on and let the art be as it is—a true reflection of life.

To record it, despite tens of hours failing at home, I naturally needed performance pressure to finally play and complete the mix. The set was recorded at Hamburn 2025 in the Aereal Tipi on a custom sound system built by one of the hosts, with live inkblot projections and several cubic meters of soft toys as witnesses. I can’t express my gratitude enough for the opportunity to play on that system, to my hosts Spidey and Timo and the listeners who stayed from start to finish.

I feel blessed to live on this planet and submerge myself in the transitory wonder of it all. I hope the music captures that feeling for you as it has for me.
