Eine Safari (zaˈfaːri, vom Arabischen ‏سفر‎, DMG safar ‚Reise‘) ist eine Reise, deren Ziel es ist zu beobachten und zu fotografieren. Das Wort Safari stammt aus der Swahili-Sprache und steht dort für eine Reise jeglicher Art. Beispielsweise kann auch ein einfacher längerer Spaziergang eine Safari sein. Es fand seit der Kolonialzeit Eingang in die deutsche und englische Sprache der einstmaligen Kolonialherren und wurde damals vor allem zur Bezeichnung einer Jagdreise in Ostafrika verwendet, bei der gewöhnlich Großwild erlegt wurde. Später wurde der Begriff dann auch auf andere Teile Afrikas und der Welt ausgedehnt, etwa wildreiche Gebiete im südlichen Afrika oder in Indien. Ursprünglich waren Safaris in diesem Sinne nur wohlhabenden Jägern möglich, die sich die Ausrüstung sowie die Kosten für die zahlreich benötigten Träger leisten konnten
