The man who started it all with us back in 2019 is back once again to christen a new series for Soil and Sound. @Mskruff come through with his meticulously crafted brand of downtempo, analog-drenched Dubtechno. With a vocal, echoing around the dark and smokey atmosphere of the track, only becomes more disjointed and ambient on the B side dub version.

Coming from the finest Reggae production team in Japan Bim One has remixed all-time roots classic Pablo Gad’s Hard Times to the contempolary  stepper style. The original tune was released in 1980 and it’s has been a permanent fixture on dance floors and in record collections worldwide ever since. Nearly 4 decades on from the release, this is the first official remix authorized by Pablo Gad himself.

In between our hefty physical release schedule of 2016 finds us on familiar territory: some of today’s highly noted artists will be contributing to our very first (of many) dub compilations. We’re very excited to get this new project off the ground and are thrilled for you to be part of it.

The compilation not only showcases the original sound of our artists, but also some anthemic reworks that deserve the almost necessary vinyl-only treatment. Instead, we’ve been investing all our time and energy in treating our followers with some high-end digital files before we commence with our black wax routines.

BunZer0, Belgium’s psychonaut returns after his highly successful ‘King of the Lion’ release, the North-American Elefant Doc & Dillard finally team up, dub masters Digid & Dubbing Sun strike a pose, Quantum Soul does what he does best and even the kiwi’s Perverse join in on a signature skanker only they can build.

‘Liberation’ by BunZer0 lets you travel in a space of lively wobbles and tripped-out samples all heading towards a long-lasting meltdown. Elefant Doc & Dillard’s traditional sound in ‘A Way Of Living’ allows you to meditate on an authentic dub palette that moves through air like smoke. Elefant Doc’s dedicated formula sticks to the following original jams, which immediately put you on clouds that float to higher regions. Digid & Dubbing Sun follow up with a classy anthem stepping with confidence – and which leads you to the path of Jah. Remixing tracks like ‘A Way Of Living’ makes Quantum Soul fuse his dub technology effortlessly. His take on playing with vibrant elements will remind a select few of his old-school sound on labels like Dubbed Out & Dubting. Perverse manages to close down the first compilation with their darkened take on dub music containing a healthy dose of distortion and madness.

After hearing all this wonderful dub material we’ve decided to step down from our regular outlook on dubstep. For everyone fan of the sound, the Pressed Records camp cannot wait to share all this material with you in August!

It’s no exaggeration to say that J:Kenzo is one of the leading lights of underground bass music today.  As a producer for labels as diverse, venerable, and crucial as Tempa, Metalheadz, and Exit Records he makes much of the music defining the moment, from drum & bass to steppers.  He also shapes our listening and dancing through the careful curation of his own Artikal Music UK and Lion Charge imprints, to say nothing of his monthly Rinse FM show and non-stop global touring.  Needless to say we were extremely pleased when he approached us with two tunes tailor-made for ZamZam.

“Without" is a 140 workout, at once minimalist, muscular, meditative and sinister.  A deep skanking pad and synthetic percussion set the stage for the leaden kick and steady hi hat pulse calling all dancers.  Rockers’ drum fill and test tone sprinkle dubwise flavor as the haunting melodics waft through, as hypnotic as smoke trails in a dark studio. “Without” is perfectly crafted in every respect.

The flip side “Within” is another expertly honed journey into deep 140 waters, heavy on atmospherics that recall wide open vistas and treacherous seas.  Synth and bass work as one, surfacing and diving to both anchor and propel a massive riddim both heady and totally physical.  The hi hat is again steady with punctuating snares & claps , huge chasms of space open up leaving the listener stunned at the depths within.

After a few months’ hiatus, ZamZam Sounds returns with our third release from Philadelphia dub-tech duo Heights & Worship, the propulsive & heady “Selassie’s Song” in two parts. Heights is Ras Heights of Ital Sound System, Worship represents Rob Paine, long-time head of dubhouse institution Worship Recordings and Solomonic Sound System. ZamZam’s friendship and musical connection to Rob extends back to the BSI Records days, and the link remains strong.

Both versions of “Selassie’s Song” utilize dub techno principles in new shapes and forms, far from the familiar Rhythm & Sound homages. Techy clicks & skittering percussion intertwine with the ancient sound of the binghi drum, signaling a seamless marriage of Rasta consciousness with an early morning eyes-down techno pulse & palette.

The A side “Never Chained” mix marries double time hi hats and synthetic textures to a body-rocking half time riddim. Sharp snares cut through the dense atmospheres, like shots fired across distant waves, and the disembodied voice of Emperor Haile Selassie I intones timeless wisdom on the unity of humanity in spite of differences in race, creed, religion, or nationality. The tune’s second drop leads into a 4/4 pulse that carries the tune into full dub techno territory, continued in even sparser style on the B side.

The “Break Every Chain” mix strips away most of the melodics to focus on the heartbeat techno pulse, as metallic synth skanks rise and fall, hi hats deftly shift patterns and mechanical textures emerge and fade, a disorienting game of light and shadow. A masterclass in deep & esoteric dubwise as only Heights & Worship do it.
