Melbourne singer and producer Daniel Joshua returns with his first single in two years, ‘Hivemind’.

Composed by Joshua and Henry Griffin (formerly known as Aybner), ‘Hivemind’ weaves kaleidoscopic and winding guitar passages over the driving, uneven drum rhythms played by Jonah Gabriel. A haunting ambience lingering over the song’s duration is communicative of the journey it takes, as Joshua warns agains the perils of revering influencers with ulterior motives.

“I find celebrities and the concept of influencers quite terrifying and a bit sad really,” says Daniel Joshua. “A lot of the time they’re trying to sell products or things they don’t really care that much about to people who don’t really want or need them. Their followers end up really investing in the lives of people who look at them as a target market or as a stat. I absolutely despise that.

I wanted to explore just what happens when that idol worship gets taken too far. It reminds me a lot of the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, and how all the children were never to be seen again. Here, the followers are led away before ever realizing they have become sheep.”

The new direction from Daniel Joshua follows from prior support from Stoney Roads and Acid Stag under his ‘Droptail’ alias, for whom Pilerats claimed was “one to watch”. Previously supported on Rinse FM by Plastician and FBi Radio through Gilles Peterson, a recent feature in Jacob Aedam’s ‘The Lone Mountain Show’ on Canadian radio station N10.AS Radio has put further international spotlight on new music from Joshua.

As the first single from his debut EP coming later this year, ‘Hivemind’ is a poignant reminder of the multifaceted artistry of Daniel Joshua, and of his story that is only just unravelling.

I wrote this with my friend Tiber and focused on the exhaustion in the man’s face, particularly his eyes. The sad, melancholic gaze of the man is piercing, as if through his expression, one could not know what he has been through.

We wanted to write a short story capturing the internal dejection and insecurity that we felt in looking his eyes; as if through a brief moment in time, we could break down the barriers that were put up by this person, and see himself in all his vulnerability.

As such, this song is called ‘Weary Eyes’.
