Welcome to DRR Podcast 099, this week we welcome Rennie Foster, Canadian House & Techno Wizard based in Vancouver.

Rennie Foster has been a well-respected figure in the Canadian music and art community for over two decades. He influenced many as an early pioneer of the Hip-Hop / B-Boy movement, and later the House Music and Techno / Rave scene, participating in the first events in Western Canada during the birth of these now common urban subcultures. He is also very well known within the niche of graffiti art for his early work, having been archived in several published books.

Rennie relocated to Tokyo Japan in 2004 and became an important part of the Japanese club scene, playing all over Japan in venues such as Womb, ageHa, and Yellow, maintaining DJ residencies in Tokyo and Kyoto at the Metro club and at the Nagisa Music Festival in Tokyo and Osaka. Rennie was consistently ranked in the top 50 DJs in Japan by LOUD Magazine until re-locating back to Canada in 2011. Rennie is currently a resident DJ at Western Canada’s top after-hours club, Gorg-O-Mishin Vancouver, BC, regularly traveling to play as a guest at underground venues across Canada, Detroit, New York,and Paris and has played festivals such as Shambhala and Bass Coast among others.

Rennie Foster has released music with Jack White’s Third Man Label, classic dance music labels including Transmat, F-Communications, Synewave, Teknotika, Subject Detroit, and is widely recognized for his underground anthem Devil's Water on Rebirth Records. Rennie has remixed, or been remixed by, some of the top names in dance music such as Juan Atkins, James Zabiela and Swayzak. He has released many singles, EPs, and four full length albums. He runs a signature record label RF and continues to produce tough urban house music and stylish techno for cutting edge dance music imprint including Goldmin Music and Skylax Records in Paris and the Detroit based Soiree Records.

Fanon Flowers grew up listening to Detroit Techno and Chicago House music via cassette tapes recorded off the radio from The Wizard aka Jeff Mills in Detroit and DJ Farley Jackmaster Funk in Chicago.

Fanon Flowers (pronounced Fuh-nahn) is a Techno music producer and DJ based in Los Angeles, California. Fanon was born and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan, exactly halfway between Detroit and Chicago, the birthplaces of Techno and House music. A product of his environment, Fanon purchased a Roland SH-101, TB-303, TR-505 and TR-606 and started buying Techno 12" records. Fanon naturally gravitated to the more dominate post-industrial machine sounds of Detroit Techno and quickly developed a style which combined the funky, dark, syncopated rhythms of Detroit Techno with the raw soul of Acid House music.

After meeting Carl Craig through a mutual friend, Flowers began to garner attention in 1994 when he appeared as Mode Selector on the "Elements of and Experiments with Sound" compilation on Detroit's seminal Planet E label. In 1996, Fanon Flowers appeared under his Mode Selector alias on the "Detroit: Beyond the Third Wave" Compilation.” Released on Astralwerks Records, Flowers appeared alongside Detroit Techno stalwarts such as Terrance Dixon, Claude Young, DJ T-1000 aka Alan Oldham, Ectomorph and Anthony "Shake" Shakir. 

Also in 1996, Flowers started his own Techno imprint, Mechanisms Industries (distributed by Triple Vision Holland), to showcase his unique and mechanical approach to Techno. With over 60 records produced and released on various labels, including Planet Rhythm, Pole Group, Warm Up, TH Tar Hallow and Mind Trip. Currently, Fanon continues to produce music for his own label, and perform DJ’s sets at European venues.

British-born and now Berlin-based producer and DJ Pris, has been carefully carving out an exciting and unique space for himself within the techno circuit.
Pris debuted on his own Resin imprint back in 2013. This was followed by ten expertly curated EPs from himself and others. With the move to Berlin came his debut EP on Avian, titled ‘This Heavy Heart’ in 2016. This was followed by the ‘Love, Labour, Loss’ EP on the same label later that year. Alongside this, Pris launched the more dance-floor orientated, hand stamped series ‘Unbeknown To Us’, which has seen two releases.
2017 saw Pris release ‘Faith &amp; Honour’ EP on Semantica Records. The same year, Pris released the final record on Resin, a remix EP featuring remixes from Blawan (‘Dodeca’), Shifted (‘Devil In The Detail’), Reeko (‘Reef’), and Stenny (‘Reef’). Resin has also featured releases by Skee Mask, J.Tijn, Metrist, and Perth Drug Legend.
Pris has remixed for Tadeo (‘The Cyborg’) for Non Series and reworked PactInfernal ‘Circle VIII (Fraud)’ for the Samurai Music off-shoot Horo alongside Svreca. In 2018, he remixed AWB ‘Kinetic Lullaby’ on Taapion.
2018 saw Pris release the ‘Flagrant Foul’ EP on Non Series and contribute ‘Truth’ to the Propaganda Moscow Act V EP.
In early 2019, Pris released the acclaimed ‘White Lies Cast Dark Shadows’ EP on new Madrid-based techno label, Envra.
In May 2019, Pris, activated a bold and visionary new collaborative concept, Empathy, with the innovative ‘New Babylon’ EP, released to widespread acclaim.
The follow-up EP on Empathy, ‘Sulphur City’ was released in November. 
Empathy is a mixed media project with Pris’s close friend and enigmatic house producer Deejay Astral (Steel City Dance Disc’s, Shall Not Fade, Who’s Susan) who worked alongside Pris for their previous imprint, Resin, providing art direction.
Pris’s music has been supported leading DJs including Ben UFO, Surgeon, Anastasia Kristensen, Zenker Brothers, and Mary Anne Hobbs. An in-demand performer, Pris has played at many leading venues around the world.
