Over the past 10 years, Adam Westover, better known as Ovoid, has been creating symphonic musical adventures that span combine modern musicality with cutting-edge audio production and engineering. Psychedelic and mind bending, Ovoid’s music never disappoints; impossible to pass up and captivating in form, his compositions cultivate a distinct hallmark of the audiophile experience while bringing electrifying bass music to dance floors. As such, The Rust is honored to once again host his work, this time featuring the exclusive premiere of his track, “Desert Planet”, from his latest EP, Apocryphal. 

“Desert Planet” opens with elements of thick and decorative percussion. The cerebral LFOs dance in the background while building the melody with strums from a filtered guitar, and each embellished note elucidates deep echoes and fleshy reverb. Adam shines bright when incorporating many musical disciplines into his EPs; His creativity often radiates with nods to Eastern musical stylings and syncopated rhythms. He is constantly and dynamically evolving his tonal space and creating musical environments that conjure imagery of spaces that are both compressed and tight, and that explode into wide and galloping expanses of sound, and “Desert Planet” channels each of these distinct characteristics with ease. With the full release scheduled March 4th, the full release of Apocryphal is close on the coattails of this high-impact single.

Creation : Evolved, out October 7th on Gravitas Recordings, is a reimagining of the fan favorite Somatoast Album regarding the alchemy of creativity. Inspired by nature, Somatoast makes use of the natural world to serve technical, musical purposes. Seeds pods make shakers and icicles are a percussive ensemble. These carefully selected remixes take each track and expand it in a new way, taking on new genres and styles while keeping the original sounds and ideas of the originals.

Tapping in Boyd Hill (Morillo Remix) begins the remix compilation with a stunning atmosphere and live drumming captivating the listener, building into beautiful strings and an unreal vibe to start this journey.  Dawn (Arcturus Remix) continues these flawless drums into a faster liquid drum & bass pattern with drippy synths and sound design, putting anyone in a happy mood.  Kokoa (Alex Unger Remix) slows down the pace in a perfect way with live strings and a tribal beat impossible not to move to, a flawless groove with dreamy sounds throughout.  Kokoa (Liquid Bloom Remix) takes these same dreamy sounds and original track into a whole new light with added piano and a heavy half-time beat, perfectly blending the line between the two different vibes.  Icicle (Slyph Remix) begins with drippy texture and foley, slowly bringing in light drum & bass drum patterns into a dreamy liquid drum & bass track for the first drop and a perfect half-time counter for the final drop. Creation is Creation (Faelow Remix) dives into the original album title track in a whole new way, with more drippy textures and foley over a downtempo beat that takes a full journey.  Creation is Creation (Alex Fun Remix) takes a completely different approach and creates an insanely groovy house track, using the same mind-melting sounds into a whole new style that we can’t stop bopping our heads to.  Icicle (Lil Fish Remix) takes the same Icicle track in a whole new direction with captivating string instruments building into an epic drop capturing the signature Lil Fish sound, a perfect closing of this compilation.

A circadian rhythm is a day in the life of all earthlings, the predictable fluctuations of our physical, behavioral and/or mental states over the course of a roughly 24-hour period as influenced by sunlight and temperature. With this concept as the title of JPOD's second full-length, one can see the clear yin-yang to this album, all of the acoustic instrumentation blending in so organically with digital sound craft that the seams are practically invisible, swirls of black and white in balance.

"To the Light" takes you up, with its emotive vocal lines and strummed guitars effervescently supporting a slick downtempo beat, gliding directly into "Midnight Oil," with its fat brass, echoed piano, and staccato vocal snippets lending it a touch of darkness. Later on, tracks like "Moonlit" and "Till Dawn" also seem to interpret the album title, but the theme isn't so rigidly literal as it is interpretively implied. Circadian Rhythms is not an album drowning in messages so much as it creates a feeling, a sense of rounding into form and being in the pocket, of hitting one's proverbial peak and aging gracefully.

JPOD's debut full-length Halfsteppin strutted out confidently in 2012, but a lot of life has been lived since then. In many ways, he is the same old beat chef we always knew, a staple at Bass Coast and Shambhala, frequent collaborator with Stickybuds as the StickyPod Connection, and ace producer of the tastiest womp gland-tickling bass music. Yet, he has clearly matured, both as a producer and as a young parent. Circadian Rhythms continues the trajectory outlined on his Taking a Deep Breath EP from 2014, a move towards more sophisticated song-writing and polished production, incorporating his worldly backpacker influences and peak time main stage aesthetic into a style that reflects the total sum of his age and experience. As such, his sophomore album pulses with a fatherly feeling of deep caring and quiet strength.

From his turntablist origins to his mastery of Ableton, the progress charted in the seven years between albums is obvious. Where he was once consistently over-the-top in quirky glitch-hop funk, JPOD now demonstrates unimaginable depth in stunning subtlety, with fifteen mid-tempo jams that feel lovingly nurtured rather than slightly imposed. Make no mistake, he still brings the party, but he hits you in the feels too, delivering as much in the way of mood-drenched meditations for headphones as rib rumblers for the twilight hours. Although that Spoonbill-esque good natured, trip tweaked, mutant funktronica freak fest style is still apparent on "Right Now," Circadian Rhythms generally relaxes into a warm vibe that is all JPOD's own.

Suffice to say, there ain't no halfsteppin' on this album. Circadian Rhythms is a long, confident stride towards ultimate perfection. Enjoy the trip!
