Next week, Damian Lazarus’ revered Crosstown Rebels imprint will welcome Fur Coat back into its rotation via their ‘Berlin Chronicles.’ The closing number, “Seven,” is a tough bit of techno, swarming with floor-focused textures that further display their assiduity for crafting cuts aimed at underground heads. Haunting chords and pads rise up from the shadows of rolling basslines, as lush layers unravel across their topnotch drum work. It’s complex, it’s dramatically dark, and it’s sure to be the greatest thing to hit your ears all year.

In the same vein as her recently launched MOOD imprint, ‘Believe’ is suited to a number of atmospheres and settings. Across the nine original productions and one collaboration with label boss Adam Beyer, Nicole has crafted a sonically diverse long-player of sounds which draw on the plethora of styles electronic music has to offer. From her accustomed techno to twisted house and everything in-between, the stylistic variety on offer means cuts ‘Believe’ will easily feature in more intimate settings and big-room venues alike. ‘Believe’ features a host of tracks aimed squarely at the clubs. From the moody ‘Movin On’, the bass-heavy “Do Your Thing”, to the industrial techno grooves on “Come And Lay” and the hypnotic chanting vocal on “Get On It”, the techno-aficionados will not be disappointed with what is sublime set of cuts that will no doubt destroy any dance-floor. 
In contrast however, there are more intimate moments to be found. For example the rhythmically entrancing yet uplifting “Fly With You”, to “Liberum Spirita” with its mazy ethereal breakdown, and the synth-heavy percussive builder “Lumière Tamisée”. Nicole’s further flexes her production muscle with the stripped back dub-flavours of “Big Love With No Apology”, and a robotic groove-laden funk on the standout “Can I Get Some”.  “Believe” delivers a consummate body of work with which Nicole’s considerable abilities in the studio are clear for all to hear. A wide-range of sounds that is sure to appeal to the idiosyncratic tastes of the various sub-sections of electronic music community. Furthermore, it lives up to the high-standards of previous Drumcode long-players and is an engrossing and impressive debut; and one that offers a smooth segue into the next chapter of an already exciting career.

Truesoul presents the first original Ida Engberg EP since 2014.

A vital member of the Truesoul and Drumcode family, we’ve been anticipating a production return from Ida Engberg for some time now. Not that she’s been idle. Busy settling into a new home in Ibiza and raising three children with Adam Beyer, she’s also been heavily involved in climate activism, social justice issues and animal protection. 

Everything happens in perfect timing. And no one knows this better than Engberg; innately aware of the creative space and the time a project needs to bloom. A work almost 12 months in the making, ‘Return to Consciousness’ is her transcendental five-track return to music creation.

‘Reverse Time (Intro)’ is ritualistic in intent, a two-and-a-half-minute ambient opener that sets the tone for what’s to come. The title track is sublime cosmic house, brought to life by lush pads, swirling arpeggios in the break and a delicate vocal that amplifies its message. ‘House of Colours’ is a delicious tribal roller, driven by a chanting vocal line that yanks us towards the dancefloor. ‘The 8th Fire’ embodies an undeniable old school early morning spirit, with its distinctive melodic hook. ‘Reverse Time’ is a searing late night techno composition that builds the energy to fever pitch, before bringing us back down to a sated state. All in all, a career-best work and well worth the wait.
