Today we’re lucky enough to be premiering what someone in the office just referred to as a ‘serious nugget.’ Yeah, OK, so that person was me. And yes, I did say it to myself, in my head, after listening to it over and over again; but the fact remains and it is what it is. The Critical Music signed drum & bass producer, Emperor’s'She Said VIP’ – which will be exclusively available from the Critical store this Monday – is superlatively frenetic, heaving it’s way out of the rousing build up introduction with the sort of lurching industrial bassline that’ll set most dancefloors afire. The full Into Black EP will be released on vinyl and digital this coming Monday, but we’re toasting the publication of the EP’s pre-order link here today because it ties in nicely with the fact that we recently announced the next Critical Sound date (10th July) where you’ll be able to witness Emperor going B2B with The Upbeats.

The Tantrum Desire brand is most associated with the kind of epic  productions that have seen drum and bass become a mainstay of the mainstream. True heads, though, will know that there’s always been an undercurrent of genre-twisting experimentalism present, which came to the fore on last year’s huge album Diversified. So, which corners are explored on this EP?

Nationwide Rocker opens in a dark and techy landscape. Reverberating stabs underpinned by the insistent buzz of low end strikes suggest we’re building into a display of neurofunk technique. And then we’re dropped into something that isn’t quite categorisable. It’s hard, dancefloor music, built from a stripped-back rhythm sequence and a succession of expertly-twisted basses. This is the collision of raw, visceral energy with that trademark Tantrum Desire slick production science.

Then Airhead takes us somewhere different. With a funky techstep call and response pattern, this is an instant dancefloor bubbler. And there’s an eighties electro sensibility woven into the stabs and synth-effects which makes this feel like it could be a 2016 rework of a forgotten crate-dug classic. It’s minimal and focussed but, as you’d expect from Tantrum Desire, it refuses to let the temperature drop, with precision-crafted builds to keep attention gripped on the bass-and-mid interplay right to the finish.

You won’t be prepared for what Think About You has to offer. A bleeps-and-pads hands-in-the-air hardcore intro drops into some triplet-time rave workout material. We’re treated to mid-range grind resolving into luxuriant sweeping tones over a skippy 6/8 time-signature. But ravers and MCs better not get too comfortable, as a “Switch it up” sample signals a slam into 4/4 time. Then the breakdown cools things off ready to go back in with the madness once again.If you didn’t know about Tantrum Desire’s versatility then you should have been paying closer attention. Don’t worry, though, because this EP is a perfect representation of the serpentine rule-bending contained within the sound. It’s all dancefloor music, but beyond that, anything’s possible

Since signing exclusively with Viper Recordings in April, Austria’s Dossa & Locuzzed have been enjoying some serious recognition as one of the industry’s hottest new drum and bass duos. With their debut single ‘Only Way / Electric Boogie’ released back in May on Viper’s sister label Viper VIP to tumultuous praise, the talented producers have been hitting the scene hard in 2016. Featuring on Viper’s ‘Bassrush 1.0’ album with ‘Ninja’, as well as the annual ‘Drum & Bass Summer Slammers 2016’ compilation with ‘Banana Split’, Dossa & Locuzzed have been gaining support from some of the biggest names in the industry along with fresh new remixes of NC-17’s ‘Soldiers’ and Deuce & Charger’s ‘Who Can You Trust?’. Now with their first single on the main Viper Recordings roster, Dossa & Locuzzed are back to see out the end of the summer with even more fire.

‘Dance’ sets the scene with an airy and atmospheric intro before spiralling headfirst in to a catchy beat packed full of funky synths, gritty stabs and plenty of old-school raver vibe. Adding some vocal samples and plenty of drums in to the mix, the duo has created the perfect recipe for a seriously eclectic track which is a sure-fire classic in the making.

Next up, ‘Shag’ jumps straight in with a mix of swirling synths and bouncy drums, kicking things off with a no-nonsense drop that means business. Featuring an up-tempo beat with aggressive stabs and riffs not unlike those you’d hear tearing up a jump-up dance, this first tune from the single packs a punch you’re not likely to forget.

With ‘Dance / Shag’, Dossa & Locuzzed have once again brought a diverse and varied sound to the table with their trademark mix of feel-good vibe and funky spin on classic, hard hitting Drum and Bass. Prepare to be hearing these guys’ sounds in your ears a lot more over the coming months!

Drumsound & Bassline Smith don't ever take the easy route. They gave us their third album, “Wardance”, only a short time ago. They've got a diary packed with international deejay gigs. They've been busy scouting new acts for Technique Recordings. And, on top of all that, they've somehow found the time to give us a brand new four-track collection. And trust, the “Kilimanjaro” EP is set to dominate the landscape just as much as it's mountain namesake.

You see, as the title of the first track, “Jungle All the Way”, tells us, this EP weaves together 2018 drum 'n' bass with it's OJ roots. And that story begins right from the intro, with mighty sweeps of bass and tension-ratcheting percussion setting the tone. As the tune builds into an explosive drop, we could analyse the influences of jump-up, tech, or jungle. But, above all else, this is simply a weighty piece of dancefloor ordnance, and is going to go off wherever it's played.

“Kilimanjaro” shows us a cybernetic collision between nature and technology. A wash of pads lays out an expansive scene, populated by African percussion and the sounds of the forest. The drop cuts in, dissecting the atmosphere and rebuilding it into a phrase-for-phrase clash between organic and synthetic tones. Drumsound & Bassline Smith's rolling breaks drive things onwards, fusing this into a high-energy rave roll-out.

It may be that “Dubplate” is where we see history's most explicit influence. The intro could be straight from a euphoric nineties classic, pads and percussive tones moving and uplifting the dance. And then things are twisted a few notches more vicious as a sure-to-be-wheeled-up drop brings us a penetrating blade of bass and intense rolling beats.

Finally, we've got “Lose My Head”. This is where Drumsound & Bassline Smith lay out their take on the techstep paradigm. From the unsettling introductory pads, to the deployment of the instantly-recognisable vocal sample, some of these tropes might seem familiar, but never delivered quite like this. As the electrifying power of the drop manifests, this will unify generations of ravers in appreciation.

In this EP, Drumsound & Bassline Smith have continued the journey they began on “Wardance”. Taking us through foundational influences on modern drum 'n' bass and breathing new life into them is a task not many would be equipped for. In these tracks, however, not only are we given a history lesson, we're given a glimpse of the future at the same time.
