Law - Deep Jungle Vol 10

Do yourself a favour, go grab a coffee and make yourself comfortable. This mix and interview runs super deep. Just as we like it.

It all comes courtesy of a man named Janne Hatula. You will know him best as Fanu or Fatgyver, a hugely proflic artist, DJ and audio engineer, and the mastering engineer of choice of a huge array of  top level artists across the electronic spectrum.

Certifiably one of those ‘hardest working people in D&B’ characters, the eminent Finnish artist has that perfect balance of output across his disciplines and his styles. Artistically he’s been hurling all manner of breakbeat punches at us for over 20 years and they cover a fantastic spread. His dusty hip-hop beatmaker style jams can be found under his Fatgyver alias while his darker junglistic choppage comes our way via his Fanu project.

There are many shades between and two key crossover points: Musically, everything flexes around the broken beat and creatively, his mindset is unbounded by trend, hype flavour of the month. Fanu very much drives in his own lane.

“Don’t be a boring, predictable artist,” he states. “You’re here to do whatever you want. Be a chameleon. Stomp a footprint there that will be noticed.”

Here are more reasons to stomp around. Like this mix, for instance. A unique trip where he ties his two aliases together and takes us on a journey from Fatgyver to Fanu and back again. The result is a timeless dive into honest breakbeat soul. A playful place where the parallels between hip-hop and jungle are both painted and subverted vividly.

All 100% his own material (with a few exclusives along the way), the mix was inspired by Fanu’s latest album Classy Coffee Cuts. Released back in October, it’s one of his most diverse and personal albums as he joins the dots between his many styles and really put his soul and influences out on display in a way that pays homage to the classic album alchemy that can often be overlooked in the contemporary game. Based in Manchester, Pod Imiya plays a mix of jungle and drum n bass styles from all eras, dropping in hardcore, IDM and sped-up electro. Pod Imiya’s sets are usually centred around rough breaks with dark but uplifting selection.Starting out as a regular DJ at Hit & Run, she quickly went on to play at nights across the UK such as Rupture, License to Jungle and Chicken Shop. Since learning to produce, Pod Imiya's tracks have been centered around intricate breaks, ominous bass sounds and ethereal leads, inspired by the production of Spirit, Quartz and Necrotype. Her track 'Dawn' was included on the Repertoire Streetlight Vol 2 featured by UKF and played by Mantra on the Rupture Rinse FM show.

NOS, along with his late brother, Mark, formed the music production outfit Hidden Agenda, who released in the early Drum'n'Bass scene on many influential labels such as Metalheadz, Creative Source & Reinforced.

Following up the Dispatches trilogy on Metalheadz, Hidden Agenda started their own label, Dispatch Recordings, as a platform to release a second album and their own solo material as NOS (Jason) and Max Fresh (Mark). Initially aided by Ant TC1 on managerial duties, Ant TC1 now runs Dispatch Recordings to this day.

Jason stepped away from the music scene for a lot of years, started a family and settled into a 'proper' job, always expecting to keep producing and go back to it eventually. Following the death of his brother to cancer in 2016, and much self-examination consequently, he's making the return, in Mark's name as well as his own.

Jason has set up a Patreon for a direct link between himself and anyone who wants to join him on this journey back into drum and bass; if you become a patron, apart from his eternal gratitude, you will receive exclusive mixes, unreleased/exclusive tracks, early access and he will try to fulfil as many requests and suggestions for content thrown at him.
