As he'll happily tell you, Eddie Fowlkes has been DJing for 42 years. That's a long time for anyone, but especially for someone who never really stopped. From his early records on Juan Atkins' Metroplex record label through to newer releases on his own labels City Boy and Detroit Wax, he's been doing his thing and staying true to himself and his timeless combination of Detroit dance music genres. He doesn't always get his dues alongside his fellow Detroit techno pioneers in the Belleville Three, probably because his sound was always more hybrid, a blend of techno and house that he would come to call techno soul, including on his landmark 1993 album with Moritz von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann, The Birth Of Technosoul.

But Fowlkes is still a force of nature, and a master at mixing too, having four decades to hone his craft. You'll hear that skill on his RA Podcast, which comes in the wake of two more prominent releases, for Rekids and Classic Music Company/Defected, that might help (re)introduce him to a wider audience. Touching on soul, jazz and funk, this is functional but deep stuff played by a master selector, whose hands you can always hear in the mixing—a personal, human touch that defines techno soul.

Alban Uzoma Nwapa (born 26 August 1957), better known by his stage name Dr. Alban, is a Nigerian-Swedish recording artist and producer with his own record label, Dr. Records. His music can best be described as Eurodance/hip-hop reggae in a dancehall style. He has sold an estimated 16 million records worldwide and is most famous for his worldwide 1992 hit "It's My Life", from the album One Love.

Vladislav Nogin - Klingklang

Vladislav Nogin hits hard with this 5 track EP. Filled to the brim with heavy duty shuffling techno, but not in the way you think. Polyrhythmic deepness, accents funkier than 1991 Chicago house and crazy sampling that hypnotizes with its awkward placement in the patterns. Nogin is also a pioneer in the SOMATIK TECHNO movement, slow and heavy techno that finds its origin in St Petersburg.

Besides working as a producer for a bunch of cool labels, Nogin is a composer for film, which gives him a productional edge in balancing the sounds he uses on each other like lego's. It's tight, it's superdeep and psychedelic and we are proud to drop this on NYH: check out the somatik techno of Vladislav Nogin!

William Gibson's uncannily prophetic novel Neuromancer was the 1st in a set collectively known as The Sprawl. The same term also refers to a fictional Megatropolis covering the entire Eastern US seaboard in the books, and was also the title of a staggering, standout track on Mumdance's pivotal Take Time EP.

The Sprawl is now also a noun for Logos, Mumdance and Shapednoise's new collaborative trio))), which was first conceived at Berlin's CTM15 festival, and now makes their recorded debut with EP1 of a rolling series to be archived by The Death of Rave.   

Inspired by Gibson's notions of uploaded consciousness in a post-human society, and the way in which the sensory-scrambling effects of technology have played out across our collective reverie, EP1 ventures four cuts of retina-scorching dis-torsion and chrome-burning modular synth work attempting to emulate the physical and mental impact of SimStim overload and fractious hyperreality.

Head first, Drowning In Binary rinses us thru a maze of recursive techno chambers and convulsive noise, acclimatising us to the temporal displacement in preparation for the retching, body-quake detonations and finely-contoured synthetic sensuality of From Wetware to Software to take hold. 

On the other side, their references become more explicit, and violently dynamic, as the gutted late '90s tech-step structures of Haptic Feedback glance in the direction of classic Prototype and Reinforced Recordings, before Personality Upload steadily dismantles your mental firewalls with a gyroscopic sense of weightless delirium.

Ultimately, EP1's mostly beat-less dynamics lends it to polysemous reading; at once comparable with elements of La Peste's late '90s french flashcore or the unquantised designs of FIS, and likewise, it's applicable as both 'floor-shocking DJ tools, or as a prop in your own, private sci-fi fantasy.
