In an era in which ‘psychedelia’ can often mean merely a grab-bag of influences from which wah-wah pedals and two-note riffs are dispensed as signifiers and signposts into a realm of easy accessibility as opposed to gateways to another dimension, it can be a rarity to come across a band who are genuinely fixated on creating alternate realities for the listener. Yet this is exactly how Stockholm’s Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation view their incandescent art, and it’s this sensibility that’s led to the kaleidoscopic spendour of their debut full-length for Rocket Recordings, ‘Horse Dance’.

“It’s a continuum that flows beyond here and now, and psychedelic music seems to be a really powerful way to unveil those deeper oceans of being that are our true home.” reflects Josefin, who forms half the core of the band with Fredrik Joelson. The last twelve months have seem a dramatic rise to prominence for The Liberation (who take their band name from the Tibetan Book Of The Dead) with their EP ‘Diamond Waves’ leading to shows in their homeland with Goat and Les Big Byrd, a nomination for a Swedish Grammy as best newcomer, and rapturously received appearances at festivals like Roskilde.

These adventures have set the stage for a spectacular movement into the unknown from their earlier work. ‘Horse Dance’ is a razorsharp collection of ditties that marry dreamlike radiance with hypnotic rhythmic drive, set alight by a prismatic experimental glow. It inhabits a realm in which a propulsive ‘60s-tinged pop song like ‘Sunny Afternoon’ can be elevated skyward with krautrock-tinged repetition, dub echo and analogue curlicues alike, and one in which a Broadcast-style mantra like ‘You Have Arrived’ can tap into a psychic lineage that stretches all the way from The United States Of America to Portishead’s ‘Third’. Yet whilst ghosts of the like of Laika, Cat’s Eyes and The Creatures may lurk in the darker recesses of these songs, this is a band paying no homage to bygone glories.

The Liberation cite a myriad influences in both their philosophical stance and their aesthetic, from 12th century iconoclasts like Milarepa to 20th century sonic voyagers like Catherine Ribeiro, and from Kandinsky’s abstract expressions of synaesthesia to the avant-jazz of Moondog. Yet at all times their transcendental extrapolations are married to icy and enticing melodic flourishes, making for a revitalising clash between the chic and the transcendental, and a sound as biting as it is beatific. “I definitely think that the human need for altered states - to see oneself from a bigger perspective - is a deep fundamental need” Josefin elaborates. “We’ve been deprived of access to our full nature by a restrictive system where altered states may be the ultimate taboo.”

With ‘Horse Dance’, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation step into a world where all such restrictions and taboos are null and void, and this journey is already proving quite the spectacle to behold.

La historia de DRXL como productor electrónico se inicia en la febril época del Acid House de finales de los años ochenta. Después de cambiar las tornamesas por sus primeros sintetizador, caja de ritmos y sampler, XL empieza a producir el tipo de música electrónica que se tocaba en aquellos días en las pistas garage del mundo: mezclando techno de raíces new-wave con industrial, gótico, hip-hop y los entonces aún nuevos sonidos de la música house. A principios de los años noventa funda el colectivo mexicano de música electrónica Bongomaniacs junto con Alan Gabo (sonika) y Tek (Deco-Lab, Flux, D-Konstrukt). Después de mudarse a Bloomington, Indiana, EEUU en 1994, continúa su carera músical como solista, incorporando los sonidos del Dub, Trip-hop y Drum‘n’Bass a su ya ecléctico estilo electrónico. En 1997, graba un demo de tres temas en los estudios S.I.N.corp de la Ciudad de México, uno de los cuales, “Zu (consummated mix)”, aparecería, en 1998, en el primer volumen de la compilación Bloomington Electronic Music Coalition (BEMC), publicado por Izod Records. Gracias a BEMC y a la estación colegial WIUS, DRXL hizo su debut en el escenario durante el festival After-Shock de ese año. Las excursiones al hip-hop abstracto de DRXL se vieron enriquecidas con la incorporación de DJ Clave (aka ‘adario’) en las tornamesas. En 1999, regresa a los estudios S.I.N.corp para terminar un demo de 10 temas, incluyendo piezas grabadas en vivo durante la presentación del BEMC vol. 1 en el café Cheshire de Bloomington. A principios del año 2000 aparece la segunda compilación BEMC (bajo el sello Nefarious) la cual contiene, una vez más, un track de DRXL: Post-Hip-Hop (tirando el futuro a las fauces de los lobos). Desafortunadamente, a mediados del mismo año, DJ Clave abandona Bloomington para irse a vivir a Boston, no sin antes dejar grabadas las bases de lo que sería el último demo de DRXL como dueto. Unos meses después, XL también deja Indiana, para regresar a la Ciudad de México y continuar trabajando con los ex-Bongomaniacs Alan y Tek . Desafortunadamente, Alan se muda a Alemania a mediados del 2001, y los archivos de sus sesiones juntos quedan perdidos en algún lugar de Boston, Münich, Bloomington o la Cd. de México. Durante 2002, DRXL continúa produciendo nuevo material, otra vez como solista, con colaboraciones ocasionales, como la del DJ holandés L-Co, ex-Turpentine, y el guitarrista ruso Denis. Entre los resultados de esas sesiones, el track ‘Return of Da Joint’ es seleccionado por discos Noiselab para aparecer en su compilado de música electrónica mexicana 004 Pause, el cual sale a la venta a finales del mismo año. En estos años, las influencias del hip-hop abstracto y el Drum’n’Bass empiezan a ocupar un papel central dentro de su música. En 2003, se une al colectivo Konfort, con quienes se ha presentado en diversos foros de Mexico y el extranjero (Colombia y Chile). A la fecha, sus piezas han aparecido en los volúmenes 006, 008 y 010 de la serie de compilados Máximas Texturas de discos Konfort, siendo el primero de éstos nombrado por la revista Sonika entre los discos de música electrónica mexicana mas importantes de todos los tiempos, y el último de los cuales gana el prestigioso premio Qwartz, en Francia, a la mejor compilación de la escena electrónica independiente mundial. En 2004, aparece su primer EP “Cálculo Lambra” dentro del netlabel No Copy Protection asociado a Discos Konfort, uno de los primeros sellos de descarga gratuita en línea de México, y el primero en usar las licencias de Creative Commons en el país. Hasta la fecha, el disco ha sido descargado más de seis mil veces. En el 2005, además, DRXL empieza a producir pistas para MCs mexicanos como Kaixa aka Overa Negra, Andre y el grupo Loto Negro. A finales de 2007, aparece su segundo EP ”Izkierda” también en No Copy Protection. Actualmente, es director de comunicaciones de Discos Konfort, uno de los sellos fundamentales de la escena electrónica del país.
