'Meet the Decline' is the third episode of downliners sekt's trilogy with Barcelonan bass music label disboot records in co-production with dsekt[dot]com.

Lurching from a subbass drenched dream, Downliners Sekt continue to surprise, confound and delight with this, the final in their trilogy of 12'' explorations into shattered electric soul music. Having turned heads with their intense, abstracted and very personal approach to bass music in previous releases, this new record surprises us once more with the duo retracting their teeth, and baring their broken hearts in these 4 soul-filled gospel hymns for a technological apocalypse. Mutated guitars wind their way around hypnotic digital syncopations and ghostly choral textures, uplifting and menacing in equal parts.

This is the third and final installment of a trilogy started exactly 12 months ago with the release of the surprising 'Hello lonely, hold the nation' EP which was followed 5 months later by a clear statement: 'We make hits, not the public'. Their new sound has seen rapturous critical reception, their audience growing leaps and bounds with the ongoing trilogy campaign, which, since the beginning, has received wide spread support. From radio bass evangelists like Mary Anne Hobbs and Rob Booth (both of them have commissioned exclusive mixes for their respective shows); to prestigious record stores like Sounds of the Universe and Boomkat (receiving category of single of the week on both places); having being positively reviewed by The Wire, Resident Advisor, Fact, Mixmag, Playground and many other magazines and webzines. The record has also received massive support from different artists around the world, among them The Bug (King Midas Sound), Joshua Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), Mount Kimbie, King Cannibal, François K and Hollywood movie director Darren Aronofsky.

All sounds came out of my traveling. This is short stories or moments and episodes of my life that became memories. Usually I take my recorder with me when traveling. The sounds (voices, sounds of nature, streets, music instruments, etc.) I bring after that are like photos from my camera. Even better! They are more 'alive'. The sounds that I used for the tracks came from India. You can see it from titles. All what I did with the sounds is added some instruments and melodies to put some emotions.

"Bird Matrix" was made just after Actress finished writing his most recent album Ghettoville. “My studio was going through a transition, so I was testing all the equipment, and that was one of the first tunes that came out of those experiments,” he explains. It’s a fittingly exploratory tune for a mix that balances traditional functionality with dance music’s cutting edge.

The Uni series began when Alva Noto was booked to play live at the club UNIT in Tokyo, and had to adapt his sound accordingly for that environment.

‘UNIEQAV’ follows-on from and develops the concept of Alva Noto’s ‘Unitxt’ and ‘Univrs’ albums, and completes the third part in the trilogy, whereby each record is both unique and part of the bigger picture. This is also mirrored in the artwork for each release, which when combined form a triptych spelling ‘Uni’.

Described by Carsten as “sonically representing an underwater dive”, the gleaming ‘UNIEQAV’ brings as usual an inherent artistic, conceptual and scientific depth. Mathematics, data, unit systems, grids, rhythms, codes, text, language, spoken word, DNA, science technology and nature are all utilised, for both inspiration and execution.  

As with the last two Uni releases, the French sound poet Anne-James Chaton collaborates here, on ‘Uni Dna’. Where on previous records Chaton first provided a vocal track to which Nicolai composed, this time the duo flipped it; the poet wrote for an existing track, adding his unique vocal approach to recite amino acids that constitute the DNA molecule.

Regarding Carsten’s interest in 3D sound design and building sonic spaces, ‘UNIEQAV’ transports the listener to a modern, spacious and zen-like place for meditative movement. But conversely the album works equally well in a dark club - as for every glistening digital spark and simple, emotive melody - there’s a stealthy bassline, frenetic drum pattern and colossal low-end thump.

Flowers From The Ashes is the latest multi-artist project to bear the acclaimed Stroboscopic Artefacts imprimatur. There is a sensibility of decadence and corroded grandeur etched within its four album sides, reminding us that historically “decadent” times have nonetheless resulted in some of the boldest acts of individual and collective creativity. Like the "floral" theme that has remained a consistent feature of S.A.’s graphic presentation, the music here equally presents fragility and intensity in a way that really drives home this visual metaphor for good, while still holding out the promise that similar creations will be seeded in the near future.

Though many of the artists involved have set of residence outside of their native Italy, all contribute here to make a captivating portrait of a shared spirit and cultural memory. The album opens with 'Errori', deceptively fragile sonic ornaments crafted and suspended in space by Blackest Ever Black artist Silvia Kastel. This is followed closely by the mellifluous, warming glow of percussionist Andrea Belfi’s 'Spitting & Skytouching', and then by the resolute electric bass patterns and luminous fog of 'Lux et Sonus', from Eeri label head Marco Shuttle. Hospital Productions alumnus Ninos du Brasil open the B-side with a similarly dense, amorphous construction built from tribalistic chants and rhythmic patterns, to be followed by Mannequin label boss Alessandro Adriani’s 'You Will Not Be There For The End', showcasing his distinctive take on the "paranoiac breakdance" aesthetic of classic EBM. S.A. veteran Chevel rounds out the first record in the program by interlacing several percolating synth lines together into a richly conversational piece.

The journey continues with 'Starving The Mind', an undulating mini-epic from S.A. founder Lucy that is animated by his signature balance of seductiveness and concentration. The bright, biting acid synth tones of 'PRV-HH3-X', by Lory D, then takes a sharp right turn into an invisible metropolis ruled by reflective high fashion and hidden intrigue. The imposing architecture of 'Virgo Rebellion', designed by modular synth futurist Caterina Barbieri, acts as an excellent companion piece, and sets up the closing '4G' from Spazio Disponibile co-founder Neel - a crepuscular serenade that accurately sums up much of the foregoing activity.

A trio of guitar, bass and drums, Elektro Guzzi overcome the boundary between analogue versus digital, performing techno live with the drive of a machine and the sonic detail of an instrument – without any computers or loopers.

For their upcoming album Polybrass, Elektro Guzzi have drastically expanded their sonic repertoire: both in the studio and on stage, they are joined by an ensemble of three trombonists, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities. With Hilary Jeffrey, Daniel Riegler and Martin Ptak, the band are joined by three brass heavyweights, each of them well renowned for both their solo ventures as well as projects such as The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Sand and Zeitkratzer.

By treating the three trombones not simply as a set of extra instruments but rather as one coherent body of sound on its own, Elektro Guzzi dissociate the brass instruments from their conventional use and repurpose them into something completely different: a modular synthesizer, with each trombone representing one oscillator.

In doing so, Elektro Guzzi add new layers of depth to their music, emphasizing a more cinematic side of their music: like the soundtrack for a movie, Polybrass is bigger, darker, more dramatic, more intimate. Warm and fuzzy textures float weightlessly above fragile soundscapes and complex sonic fragments. At the same time, the band’s signature sound runs distinctly through the entire album: solid percussive grooves, stripped down to the absolute minimum it takes to make your body move. Hypnotic repetition, building tension and suspense up to a point where the energy of the music gets so intense you feel like you can physically touch it with your hands, interlaced with organic patterns of sound, constantly changing and evolving, pulsating and oscillating.

Belief Defect is the duo of two techno DJs and producers: Moe Espinosa – one of the co-founders of L.A.-based techno label Droid – and Luis Flores, originally from Guadalajara, Mexico and currently living in Berlin. The two met at a festival in Mexico and realized a mutual desire to explore the industrial, punk and drone corners of techno, inspired by the likes of Alessandro Cortini, Andy Stott and Fuck Buttons. Last year Belief Defect released their debut album Decadent and Depraved on the Raster label, and on February 8 they’ll be back with the Remixed 01 EP featuring reworks of album tracks by Cortini, Kangding Ray, Surachai and this one, an elegant take on the track “Deliverance” by Telefon Tel Aviv.
