Fingers in the Noise - Floating Noise

There are some projects, albums, and tracks that I just can't wait to share with you. It is especially true for those long in the making, from my favourite artists, teased years before. Such is the case with the latest release by Fernando Corona, whose music as Murcof I have followed since his solo debut in 2002 (before Martes, Corona participated in other electronic and even prog-rock projects). In 2008, I covered The Versailles Sessions, which I revisited in a "remastered" writeup here, covering the history of this Tijuana-born electronic musician. I was also honoured to [virtually] spend some time In the studio with Murcof, where you can peak into yourself for a list and photos of modular gear. Two years ago, in 2022, there was an announcement of a new project under the name Twin Color, diving into a futurist nostalgia of retro-synthesis, Blade Runner-esque apocalyptic melancholia, and all of those delicious things that feed your sentimentality. And I've been waiting ever since. Today, I'm happy to premiere a track from the upcoming album, tauntingly entitled Twin Color (vol. I) [presumably with another volume to come], which is finally due out in November on the French InFiné imprint. The production began during the first wave of the pandemic, drifting towards something romantic, evocative, and tastefully vintage. Perhaps initially, it was experimental. Perhaps it was playful indeed. But what finally came out two years later is a collection of gorgeous cinematic music, a track of which I am happy to share with you today.

A 4-hour mix set I made in honor of TD and the late Edgar Froese, who passed away almost exactly a year ago. Temporary free download, high quality mp3. 

For those unfamiliar with Tangerine Dream, it is my very humble opinion (and VERY humble) that this mix is one of the best ways to be introduced to their music. It focuses more on their moody ambient side, which was sometimes overlooked because of the band's tendency to balance out their serenity with electrified, intense, faced paced passages. Of course that those peaks and valleys were what made the band legendary, but for listeners who have trouble with peaks and valleys, I offer this mix to remedy that a bit. Tangerine Dream's historic and undeniable influence on the evolution of electronic music can be heard throughout the set. It focuses on the band's first two decades, 70s and 80s, and hones in primarily on the period when Johannes Schmoelling was the third member of the band (early 80s) (which I believe to be their greatest period, but that's just me). Take it in. The mix is both entertaining and/or something that can be left on in the background.

Vangelis - Blade Runner 2002 Esper Edition

The Blade Runner Blues lead / harmonica patch is one of the most expressive patches Vangelis ever did on the CS-80. Among other things it features sensitive and fine-tuned velocity and aftertouch response, with quite different settings for each of the two synth lines. Since it is not directly derived from the CS-80's preset buttons, as many of his other go-to patches were, and especially because it has so many expressive nuances, it is not a straightforward patch to recreate. 

 After many hours of fine-tuning every possible parameter on the CS-80V3 and much A/B comparison, this is the closest I have gotten. The pad background was created with the Roland VP-03 strings to emulate Vangelis' gorgeous VP330, and some Rhodes flourishes were added.
