Desert Mystics pt. II - Azougui

Azougui was the first capital of the Almoravid empire, which ruled from the southern fringes of the Sahel to Iberia in the 11th century. The area is one of the oldest and most important oasis sites in the region, with over 20,000 date palms, a complex system of canal irrigation, and an impressive fortress made of dry stone. As well as an important center of trade across the desert, Azougui was a natural refuge, safe behind high cliffs with few openings, and a religious center.

The Silk Road was a network of trade routes that connected Europe, Asia, and the Middle East for over 1,500 years. It was a major conduit for the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures, and is often referred to as the first global trade route. 

The Silk Road was established when the Han Dynasty of China opened trade with the West in 130 B.C.E. and remained in use until 1453 C.E. when the Ottoman Empire closed trade with the West. The term "Silk Road" comes from the highly valued Chinese silk that merchants transported along the routes. 
The Silk Road was made up of many interconnected routes that crossed some of the world's most difficult landscapes, including the Gobi Desert and the Pamir Mountains. Traders traveled in caravans with camels or other pack animals to protect themselves from robbers. Along the routes, large inns called caravanserais were built to house traveling merchants. 

The Silk Road had a lasting impact on commerce, culture, and history. It led to the growth of wealthy coastal cities like Zanzibar, Alexandria, Muscat, and Goa, which became centers for the exchange of goods, ideas, languages, and beliefs. The Silk Road also influenced European perceptions of the East, as seen in the work of Venetian merchant and explorer Marco Polo.

Born in Menorca (Balearic Islands) He has been linked to the world of music for more than 30 years.

From 1991 to 2005 he owned a record store and in 1993 he started as a DJ at Pups. It was in 1995 that he began to develop his facet as a composer, creating various productions for audiovisual media.

In 2003 he worked as a sound technician in a recording studio, leaving in 2005 to set up his own studio.

From 2005 to 2009 he was a sound technician for musical shows.

In 2010 he definitively left his job as a Disc Jockey to dedicate himself exclusively and professionally to music production, specializing mainly in Chill Out, Ambient and Downtempo music.

It was in 2011 when he released his first album in digital format with Contraseña Records. He has currently released 17 albums, several Singles, and Ep's.

Hans Zimmer Tribute (Meditation Playlist)

The music for the Dune films is composed, conducted, and produced by Hans Zimmer. Zimmer wrote several soundtracks of music for the films, including its sequels, and heavily utilized choir specifically female voices, percussion, and strings in the score's instrumentation, as well as acoustic and wind instruments. New, hybrid instruments were fabricated to conceive the "otherworldly" tonal desert sounds heard in the film. The music has been described as the composer's most "unorthodox" and experimental yet. In addition, the score for the films earned Zimmer his second Academy Award for Best Original Score. When Dune: Part Two was announced for a 2023 theatrical release, it was revealed that Zimmer had begun work on the film's music and had over an hour of music to assist the filmmakers in planning the film.

Preparing for battle:
The chant is used to prepare the Sardaukar warriors for battle on the planet Salusa Secundus.

Demonstrating religious devotion:
The rituals are the Sardaukar's cult-like devotion.

Showing the basis for their zeal:
The rituals provide a glimpse into the basis for the Sardaukar's fearsome zeal. 
The Sardaukar are depicted in Dune as the Emperor's elite troops and a warrior cult. They follow a religion of warrior-mysticism, believing in strength, self-sacrifice, and that the weak must die so the strong can thrive. The Sardaukar's abilities are attributed to the harsh environment and brutal discipline they experienced on the prison planet Salusa Secundus

Colter Wall (born June 27, 1995) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and musician. Known for his deep, gruff baritone voice and narrative songwriting, Wall's music encompasses country, folk, and western styles. In June 2015 he released an EP "Imaginary Appalachia". His self-titled debut album was released in May 2017, and his second album Songs of the Plains in October 2018. His third album, Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, was released in August 2020. His fourth album Little Songs was released on July 14, 2023.
Colter Wall was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on June 27, 1995, the son of Tami and politician Brad Wall. His father served as the 14th premier of Saskatchewan. He has an older sister named Megan and a younger sister named Faith. He attended Swift Current Comprehensive High School and graduated in 2013. He then studied at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. He made demos of his songs while he was a student, and in 2015, he decided to take a break from his studies at the university to focus on his music career when his first EP was released.

Wall recorded a seven-song EP, Imaginary Appalachia, with Jason Plumb as producer in 2015 at Studio One in Regina, Saskatchewan. He collaborated on the EP with other artists from Regina such as Belle Plaine and The Dead South. He described his music as a blend of blues, folk and Americana. The EP was released on March 9, 2015, and "The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie" was released as his first single. His music gained more attention in late 2015 when professional wrestler Brock Lesnar mentioned him as a favorite artist during an interview with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Songs from the album were featured in the television show Dog the Bounty Hunter, and the films Hell or High Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The track used in the films, "Sleeping on the Blacktop", gained more than a million streams on Spotify. The song was also used in episode 3, season 1 of the Netflix series "The Peripheral".

Wall was familiar with country music growing up, as country artists such as Johnny Cash were played at home. He started learning guitar at the age of 13, playing music of rock bands such as AC/DC and Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Later he became interested in old blues artists, and then started to listen to folk music. According to Wall, he first heard Bob Dylan's song "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" around grade 10 or 11 (aged 15 or 16), and he was inspired to start writing and singing songs instead of only playing guitar. Other early musical influences he cited include Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and he had also expressed interest in country singers such as Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Hank Williams. He also covered Marty Robbins's hit Big Iron on his album Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs.

“Cumbia Wepa” is a style of cumbia music and dance that originated in Monterrey, Mexico. "Wepa" is an exclamation used in Spanish-speaking countries to express happiness or amazement. It's often used at events where people are dancing or singing. "Wepa" doesn't have a literal translation, but it's similar to the English words "wow" or "hey".

“Cumbia” is a rhythm with African and Indigenous roots that originated in Colombia. Cumbia has been a way for people to connect with their homes across Latin American countries and the United States.

The Moors were a group of Muslim people of North African and Arabian descent who lived in the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal) from 711–1492 C.E. 

The term "Moor" comes from the Latin word Maurus, which was used by the Romans to describe people from the Roman province of Mauretania. The Moors were of mixed Arab, Spanish, and Amazigh (Berber) origins. Moors established a flourishing Islamic culture in Spain, which lasted from the 8th–15th centuries. Moors introduced many new crops, including oranges, lemons, peaches, apricots, figs, sugar cane, dates, ginger, pomegranates, and saffron. 

Moors influenced Spanish culture, including architecture, language, and literature Moorish traditions have carried over into the Americas, including art and architecture and predominant Arab-Amazigh ethnic group in Mauritania and small Arab-Amazigh minority in Mali.

DJ Sonik Bio:

In 1998, DJ Sonik began his creative journey that has taken him far and wide, from Chicago to Prague.  For over three decades he has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious events and venues, such as Berghain, Tresor, Nikki Beach, and Karlovy Lazne.

Hailing from Chicago, DJ Sonik has lived and traveled all over the globe, immersing himself in diverse cultural centers and habitats along the way.  His life experiences have inspired his musical tastes and talents–he possesses a signature sound that fuses electronic dance music with folkloric sounds.  

A style that fully expresses the influence and variety of his upbringing and travels during his 25 years in the US Military.  This provided him the opportunity to become musically diverse and culturally influenced.

DJ Sonik is known for his work in the live remix project “An Illusionary Groove”.  As a producer and DJ, he creates and performs electronic dance music, including bass-heavy remixes of club and hip-hop favorites, original deep house, soulful dubstep, funky house, and an amalgamation of other styles.

DJ Sonik does not release formulaic music to appeal to a wide demographic and gain fast, easy notoriety; instead, he lets his music and live DJ mix sets speak for themselves.

Besides a part-time DJ career, DJ Sonik runs an online "Digital Synchronization Sound Productionz (DSSP)" business and various other projects.  On top of this, he has many pursuits and interests that demand his attention to support, promote, and nurture other artistic talents and passions.

Always seeking to rescue, preserve, and promote the cultural heritage of ethnic sounds by bringing together a multitude of cultures to explore the magic of music.
