Now another “blast” to the past! This time we’re going to 2012, one of the fandom’s strongest years. If this track was released around its reenacted time—late summer of 2012—its blurb might have been something like this:

“Two seasons have passed since our circle of friends united in harmony. During that little time, they’ve vanquished countless trials before them, from resolving self-conflicts to convincing naysayers to fighting off villains. It seems that no matter how dire things go, their loyalty to each other always holds through.

But time will tell whether these tests on their friendship reach a breaking point. How far can friendship go? How far must the ponies tribute themselves before they reach their limit? Should the path of their lives be decided by destiny? Can their loyalty to each other end up binding themselves?

Follow the Element of Loyalty as she seeks to understand her true destiny and discover the meaning of true, unbreakable loyalty.”

At the time, the fandom was bustling and the show was churning out memorable episodes week after week. In addition to the slew of fan content that followed every episode, many fans were taking the show from a more mature standpoint, with more cynical views of its universe. 

Works like Background Pony took ideas and concepts from the universe, such as the metafictional role of a background character, and gave them darker twists and turns, fleshing them out in ways that the kid’s show never would, or could.

This line of fan labor is just a sliver of what the fandom offered during its early years. While some fans enjoyed breaking the cuties or the innocence of the universe, many others celebrated or glorified its wonders. With growing numbers and exponentially added creativity, fans felt more optimistic than ever.

However, this fandom unity wouldn’t last for long. The following year introduced two new changes to the show that would shake the fandom to the core. These events would come in parallel to a number of controversies surrounding fans themselves. In all, 2013 was shaping up to be a year of … chaos.
