I wanted Bridge under river to recall our first edition of In Days Of Heatwave and this is why it starts with the sound of crickets as an echo which always reminds me of where I am from, by the sea. As I wrote this piece, I tried to emulate the sound of water from scratch using synthesisers. Surprisingly, it very quickly turned into something else as I was trying to mirror its nature. It’s like the beauty of water completely washed over me and my only intention became to honour it. I wanted this piano to sound like it was washed over by a giant wave and ended up glistening. I twinkled its highest keys like droplets landing on a harp made of glass. The glassy sound was like a vessel to hold this feeling of wonder I have always felt when listening to the sound of water. The title was inspired by this Khalil Gibran poem which ends with "The river needs to take the risk of entering the ocean because only then will fear disappear, because that’s where the river will know it’s not about disappearing into the ocean, but of becoming the ocean.”

Water is the queerest thing, like a permanent bridge from and to itself that is constantly moving. I am inspired by its fluidity and permeability to change, and I wanted to honour this bridge that it continuously carries within itself.
