Qualia is an unfamiliar term for something that's actually very familiar to all of us. Qualia is the way things seem to us. The experience of happiness, the redness of an apple, the taste of wine, the touch of a loved one. Qualia is a word for how we experience everything around us. 

And when I got there after hours of wondering, 
I just ran my hands through my hair and said to myself: 
"It's beautiful up here" 
When you see something like what I saw, 
It's like a watching a giant ensemble do its thing, 
Only they don't know they're being watched. 
It wasn't contrived like a performer going on stage at a certain time, 
It wasn't like the creation of a masterpiece from a blueprint. 
It wasn't like anything anyone can do with their eyes open. 
It was just there. and it was beautiful. 

And I finally sat there by myself, holding my head in my hands. 
I'd been trying to believe for so long. 
It was all the proof that I needed, 
There's serious meaning in nothing, 
and unlimited joy in everything. 
Asking upside down questions, getting inside-out answers,

Get You Back is what happens when a dancefloor anthem gets tangled up in its own feelings. It’s bouncy, driving, dreamy, and just a little ridiculous, enough to keep bodies moving and hearts confused. The whole thing feels like a high-speed chase scene where you're fleeing from a solitary-flower-wielding pursuer who wants you back, but it's too little, too late.

Written during a bout of creative restlessness, the track began with acoustic drums, bass guitar, and a jam-like groove. But soon, the gravitational pull of the club crept back in. Rather than choosing between live-band warmth and dancefloor heft, Dualist Inquiry let both live side by side. The result is a shape-shifting track, part band, part banger, that flips moods and drum kits mid-song, echoing the emotional duality at its core.

Delhi-based electronica producer comes out of 18-month hiatus with a sample-laden, texture-heavy production announcing a new sonic direction for one of Indian electronica’s most popular producers 

Released on his own label, Dualism Records, ‘Mayday’ is a confident step into new sonic territory for the Delhi-based producer. Dualist Inquiry’s guitar-inflected, dancefloor-friendly productions placed him at front and centre at the new wave of Indian electronica, but the producer’s latest release shows just how reluctant he is to be subjected to classification of that nature. 

‘Mayday’, perhaps tellingly, begins with a sample of a harried pilot on the radio who is shouting ‘I don’t know where I am! Mayday, mayday, mayday’ who eventually aborts the mission. The production, layered in sounds and textures, sees Sahej Bakshi leave his pop-oriented, guitar-driven sound behind for one that’s high on emotion and synths, and far more experimental than anything he has done. 

"After my last release in 2016, I took a step back and decided to not write any new music until I felt an irrepressible urge, a need to express something. That something ended up being this feeling of falling freely, a mindset that has dominated a few recent phases of my personal journey. As the months went by, I felt my feet firmly on the ground again, and realised that I needed write a song to capture that specific feeling before it fades into my past." - Dualist Inquiry 

The artwork for the release has been created by Sijya Gupta and features a man free falling from space, reflective of Sahej's frame of mind. 

Dualist Inquiry will also release another track, ‘Fever Dream’ on May 4. 

The past 18 months saw Sahej diversify his interests into videography and filmmaking, and also donned the hat of a music entrepreneur. He enrolled in a filmmaking course at FAMU in Prague, and has in fact, directed the videos for his soon-to-be-released tracks ‘Mayday’ and ‘Fever Dream’. He also spent the last few months setting up Boxout.fm – an online community radio that completed a year in April 2018 – as a co-founder along with DJ MoCity.

Mayday

"Fever Dream" attempts to capture the vividness of a wild dream, the kind that rivals the intensity of a real-life experience, put together using bells, voices, found sound samples and a few synthesisers. Made over the last 4-5 months, slow and steady. You'll find samples of children playing, adults fighting, the sound of a forest at night and a variety of electronic items being destroyed.

Fever Dream

Continuing his recent run of releases, Dualist Inquiry will put out a new track and video titled ‘You & Me’ on June 1. The sunny, nu-disco-influenced track with a thumping bassline is his first-ever collaboration with Delhi-based vocalist, Sanchal Malhar, who has been associated with acts like Indigo Children and Superfuzz. 

Evidently different from his other two recent releases, ‘Mayday’ and ‘Fever Dream’, ‘You & Me’ shows his unwillingness to adhere to genre classification, while focusing on what’s important to him – making music that makes an emotional connection. 

“‘You & Me’ happened very organically, almost by accident,” says Sahej Bakshi, who makes music as Dualist Inquiry. “Months before I heard Sanchal sing an unplugged set at a cafe in Delhi. When I ran into him at boxoutwednesdays in February, I suggested we try to write a tune sometime. As it turned out, we ended up having a small afterparty at my place that same night, and that’s when Sanchal recorded the vocals with a strained/hoarse throat (in his own words). He sang a line from an old song that he wrote but never recorded, and I looped it, put it through a radio filter, recorded a bassline and guitar part, and that's about it - the song was done. That same weekend, I played the song at a gig in Mumbai and the crowd requested it a second time, and I realised that it just works,” he adds. 

The artwork for ‘You & Me’ has been created by Arushi Kathuria, who has also done the animation for the video. 

For the Delhi-based electronica producer Dualist Inquiry aka Sahej Bakshi, ‘You & Me’ also marks his first venture as a director. The past 18 months saw Sahej diversify his interests into videography and filmmaking, and don the hat of a music entrepreneur. He enrolled in a filmmaking course in Prague last year, and ‘You & Me’ is the first result of that interest. 

“I realised that the song deserves its own video, and decided to shoot the music video in my basement by renting a green screen and shooting a few angles of Sanchal and I performing the song. After the shoot, I went ahead and removed all the green screens from the footage, and animated the movement of the characters on a black background. This is what I sent to Arushi, whose animations I have been a huge fan of. She did her thing and animated this bright, cartoon-y, nostalgic ’90s universe in which Sanchal and I are placed. Personally, making this video been an incredible learning experience for me, something I have wanted to do for years, and something I'd love to continue to do in the future,” Sahej says of the video.
