Cyborg Circuitry (DjMe Stereo Mix) 142 Bpm

This was an experiment in genres.  I was thinking that the beat was a retrogroove of that "Chicks for free" song.  But the funky guitar takes it somewhere else for me...that mysterious funky backbeat, reminded me also of "Billie Jean", just in its persistence if nothing else...it's sort of a comical song (to me at least) and I thought about this poem that my stepdad, Cliff recorded with me on our Cliff Notes (vol. #1) a few years ago. He's going to redo that poem for me.  The biggest laugh of it is the fact that when a friend owes you money in your neighborhood, and you see him walk across the street (like he doesn't see you?)...quote, "How can you walk by  me, when you #Know you owe me...?"

Lowdown Mr. Funky Bleu (DjMe Orig. Mix Demo)

This is a throwback to British Pop songs of the 60's and 70's.  The kind that borrow strongly from American Soul (particularly Motown) and Bluesy RnB.  This is definitely a retro sound.  With a strong horn hook, bassline and beat.  This is the original recording from my first mix.  Produced with Total Workstation XL, on Acid Music Studio 9.  Hope you enjoy.

A Slave For Your Love (DjMe Orig. Mix)119 bpm

This is an actual digital recording I programmed on an older Roland product called The PMA-5.  

It had great mixing and Fx goodies to create what I was hearing in my head.  I always feel that one day my virtuoso solo person will find their creative space in this mix.

Not a lot of bells and whistles, just good ol' fashioned rock and roll.  
I really enjoyed being able to create this track on such a tiny device.

"Free Funk" was so much fun to produce.   I like the "boom-tastic" quality of this track.  This is a mash-up of rhythm and style.  The horns are trombone and mute trumpet.  Keepin' it real is that awesome bassline, taking you on a journey of funkitude.

When it gets the chance to take it down a notch "into the funk zone verse" it's like swimming in a warm pool of groove.

This is a sort of homage to rap, rock-hiphop styles (but all fused together).  The mix is aggresive, and the drums are stacked to back it up.  So please do enjoy the funk of it.

Ok, now this is a salute to the flute (yes, they are funky too).  

I just wanted to try working with the "wind" rhythms on a housey track.  The space to breathe "riffage" around a rhodes, bassline, and basic drum kit....is priceless.

Chill-house electronica at its best.  Digital technology 100%, but as "live" a feel as you can get.  The synths are vintage (with the reverb space), the flutes are digital, but I am playing them as a flautist would approach taking the funk.

Another funky stack of synth and electric basses, an electric rhodes that's tipsy on flange.  The kick is of tribal house beginnings, but open for the remixers.

Just The Facts (Bass Lovers Tap Mix)

A throwback to the 70s Soul music.  Classic strings and horns "sashay" throughout this funk-fest slow jam.  The track was composed, mixed, and edited on the Juno Gi keyboard.  

A new track with vocals is in process thanks to lyrical contribution by my good friend Sandra Green.

Mashing rhythms from Reggae, Jazz, Soul and RnB.  This groove creeps up on you with a familiar nod to the old school funk-ballad.

High and Dry (DjMe Instrumental Mix)

"The Phoenix Rise" is my take on coming up out of sadness, grief, fear, stress and confusion.  I wanted to convey hope, love, joy, gratitude and respect for the gift of music, which has helped me overcome many of those negative influences (i.e. people, situations, etc.) that were in my life on a regular basis. 

Those influences had me doubting myself, my friends, my loved ones and my talent.  I had to let go of that "serious nonsense" of being a non-mattering person (someone who mattered said that to me).  For a while I believed I wouldn't matter (and acted/in-acted like it was true).  But, it's NOT true.  

I had to learn The Truth all over again.  We ALL matter, even when we think or feel we don't.  You and I would be sadly missed if we were no longer here (by someone dear to you and even some unknown).  I pondered those people.  Started to reach out with music.

After much mind/soul-searching, I decided to continue expressing myself through music because it's universal in feeling, emotion, power, beauty and TRUTH.  For whatever feelings that were happy or sad, sexy and insane, introspective or intense, I thoroughly retreated into my music world for a few months (away from everyone) and began composing my feelings (good and bad) and recording and arranging them through software I was still learning how to use.

In so doing, I made a storyboard of my Life.  I could revisit events, emotional traumas and things I fought to NOT ever think about again. Things that seemed real present became less threatening (like mini series episodes) and I could re-order the important GREAT moments, like validation and love, or Forgiveness, Hope, etc..  Being able to turn those formerly terrible emotionally crippling thoughts into art has been beneficial to finding the ''silver linings" again.  NOT suffering for art, but always being about your passion, regardless of good OR bad things, has been my lesson.  LIFE goes on.

All I can say is, this musical-emotional journey over the past few years has changed my life (and my relationships). Don't EVER give up on your "day-dreams" (they may change, but the feeling stays the same).  If others don't "get it", then be your OWN passion.  That is my other lesson learned. 

"The Phoenix Rise" is my recent musical epiphany.  Latin, Hip-Hop and RnB rhythms mesh well with a Spanish guitar playing the lead, opposite classic strings that are "lush and loose".  It's short and sweet, but it still brings me up every time I listen to it.

This was completely produced on the Juno Gi keyboard, and remixed on Acid Pro 7.

The Phoenix Rise (A Ballad )

"Heart and Soul" is a track I composed 5 years ago as an homage to all the laid back groove-ologists out there.  It's jazzy, funky and infectious.  Everything you need to just "bop-a-long" in a hip hop song.  

An electric rhodes stack fleshes out the groove, while synths, guitars and regga-bass hold down the rhythm.  This is easy listening, especially after the club.  Sit back and relax.

My Metropolis (DjMe City Drive Nite Mix)

Downtempo has a new groove with "My Dj's Jazz".  It's unapologetically CHILL, still managing to bring the groove-funk into play and maximize the rhythms.

Electric rhodes, synths, mute trumpet, trombone, jazz guitar riffs and a "minimalist" laid-back bassline are the ingredients to this cool lounge confection.  

Maybe throw in a little Billie Holiday on a vocal sample (or yummy Dinah Washington remix), hmmm?!!
I love music...it's the one thing I can't do without.

My Dj's Jazz (DjMe Original Soul Mix)

Downtempo hip-hop/lounge is all about the groove and the mix.  "Oddyssey of the Journeyman" is exactly what you expect in a good beatz track. Layers & flavors of sounds and licks.  A rapper's dream of the slow burned delight.  Easy to flow to. 

I wanted atmosphere here.  In my continuing quest of the "good groove", this one dictated slow and steady.  I was able to layer in a variety rhythm and soundz.  Sometimes you gotta bring the groove down, so you can "knotch-up the funk".  Feel me on that?!!

Oddyssey of the Journeyman (DjMe Hip-Hop Mix)

Throwback time...this is for the deep-groove soldiers.  "Low Tech-Hi Drive" is a familiar nod to the 90s dance crowd (after the club).  When you just wanna groove and there aint no use in holding in your energies.  Wind down music.

Nice solid rhodes-chords, wah-wah guitars and a deep bass-groove, with an unstoppable back beat.  This is understated but rising to the dance vibe groove.

Low Tech Hi Drive (DjMe RnB-House Mix)

More fun with dance tracks on "It's A Love Thing".  Live bass and guitars (I'm getting there), fender rhodes (two layers), and a house beat to chill to.

This one seems like a dream.  It's a really chill track, but won't let you down if you wanna get with it.  Check it out.  I remixed this from an earlier version that wasn't cutting it on the overall mix.  Added claps to lock it down for the bass-groove.  

Now it's sitting pretty on the chords and the guitars.  Much love for the bells & stick percussion.  I do wanna add horns in spots next.  Vocals are forthcoming.

It's A Love Thing (DjMe Cymbal Spring Mix)

" Cherry Bomb" is all about the FUNK!!!  What a blast it was working with these sounds.  A mix of ol' school live drums with guitar mutes and delays, a blast of horn/synth power every so often, and "co-starring" bass, organs and sax riffage.  A DEEP groove-laden funkfest.

I wanna add a tight "staccato" horn group in there to really get some sweat out of it.  Solos and all.

"Rock Me Reggae" is part of my worldbeat series.  This track is a Jamaican-inspired-fusion of house and reggae.  I kept the rhythms loose and free.  The percussion drives the groove into dance, but it still holds the Rasta afterglow.  The synth is subtle but always reminding of its beginnings (till the end).

"Shy" was just remixed for an upcoming vocal session.  A mixture of bass, electric rhodes w fx, strings with analog noise undertones, acoustic guitar arpeggios, wah wahs, horn licks and a vocal sample.

This is a track I did a few months ago, and stumbled across in my catalog.  I'm working with electronic and acoustic sounds, and trying to convey my love and appreciation for the gift of music from Jamaica, Mother Africa, Latin-America and other worldbeats.

Also in this is my tribute to Afro-Jazz pioneers, Wally Badarou.
and Miriam Makeba.

The vocal near the end is a sample, but I would love to do a remix of this track with a vocalist.

This is a salute to 80s Dance-Pop, with a fusion of electric guitars, synthesizers, scratches and big beats.  It kinda has a flair for the "drama" but it has a happy ending.

Careful this is a hotter mix than normal.  You might wanna turn this to a comfortable level.  I'll have it mastered to correct levels on the remix sessions.

Dancefloor fun for the non dancer.  This is a track that gives a lot of NRG to the listener and dancer alike.  Progressive house rhythms, with synth stacks, and plenty of snare rolls and cymbal rides.

This is a musical meditation on the Korg Karma keyboard.  I wanted to deliver an atmosphere of FUN and SUN.  A smoothe soundscape with a deep bassgroove, scratches, echo-whistles and funk.  Pop to Hip Hop, this is a keeper.  Maybe create a REMIX with favorite classic tracks like Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" on top of it.

Wonderful World (DjMe Remix)

Like a hip trip-hop dream in a funky Lounge Bar/Dancehall.  After the club lights go out, you know who you are.

This is my first version ever of this groove.  The dub/remixes are very different in mood, but this is introspective, yet saucy.  

Big horns, digital orchestra, funky guitarz, synth-loops, moody soundscapes, and a beat that won't keep you still.

The reverb gives it a classic sound, but this is electronica groove.  Ultra suede trip-hop; pure and simple sound.

Jazz Hall Moment 1 (DjMe Original Mix)

This was an excercise in remixing-editing to take this track that was about 4 minutes, down to under 3 minutes.  Quick and to the point.  This pays homage to the great dance disco hits from the 70s (with a millenium edge).  The stuff they make 12" singles of.  Remember when?!!

Maybe get a diva singer to flow and rhyme in melody.  I love to dance to this kind of music.
A mixed club of coolness, hot bodies and great moves.  It makes your body mooooove!!!

There's no cure indeed.  I don't want it.

There's No Cure 4 This Groove (DjMe Re-MiX Edit) 118bpm

This is one of my newer tracks for 2013.  Headed in a progressive fashion to those classic rock sounds of the 70-80s.  I want to add some guitar solos (so it's a work-in-progress).

Pscyh-a-delicious Rap-rock sections play out in a battle for deep funk bass groovin'...I'm still working on the layers a bit for the synths/guitar riffz.

The vamp/fade is a funky epilogue of bass-groove, guitar wah-wahs and synth.
Hope you get in the zone.

Eternity & Me (DjMe Funk Rock Remix)

This is a past track from 2007.  I remixed & re-imagined it as a retro throwback to those orchestrated RnB/Soul/Pop ditties from the 60s like Barry White, The 5th Dimension and Burt Bacarach productions (horns/fx were digital on the Korg Karma played live).  I recently added some pads swells, some reverb/digital fx and editing via Acid Pro 7, and...VOILA.

"Gabriel's Song" is a reference to the literary "Horn of Gabriel" which trumpets the herald angels and the Second Coming.

In a classic pop approach, anticipation and dynamic build ups abound till the big moment of the memorable horn-line hook.
Classic with contemporary style twists in the breaks.

Gabriel's Song (DjMe The Classic Remix)

"Show Me" is a salute to my Classic Rock/Soul-RnB/Blues Pop roots.  

An electric-piano, bass, guitar+fx and synths, drums mixed w wet fx, all jammed into a  groovin' funky rhythm spaced with atmosphere and nostalgia.  

This is the kind of music I would have been listening to on the radio during my freshman year of college in '78.  There was  a freeness of hearing all styles, and music wasn't "separated" by color or "demo-graphic" genres.  I listened to everything then (and still do) especially now that music is free to be found again on the web.  Thanks to the technology we now have available.  

One really could hear all kinds of music on "pop" radio stations before the internet, cable radio or even before MTV video days..  Remember when?  The Stones, The Jackson 5, Linda Rondstadt, Kenny & Dolly duets, Little River Band, Rufus & Chaka Khan, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Al Jarreau, EWF, Journey, etc., all may have shared space on peoples' playlists at home.  But many crossovers happened...then the radio stations started selling to/specializing in certain "demos" genres, and groups of people (namely mostly younger audiences).  

So some of those classic analog sounds get lost along the way to the newer, crazier, digi-tomic music/soundz...but of course, we DO love our new & exciting sounds too.

"Show Me" is one track (in a few) that I am re-discovering from a past session that I produced beats for. It was an excercise in preserving the warmth of those "pre-era" sounds (like an audio-archivist) that still resonate in my head; but mostly because I love classic Era-Sonics of RnB/Blues/Rock & Soul music.

Show Me (DjMe Guitar Mix 2)

Duaniac/DjMe, better known as Duane Eric Abner, is a Los Angeles based photographer, songwriter and music producer.  Writing music since the age of 10, he started with the acoustic guitar given to him by his dad for his birthday.

His mother gifted him with a Magnus electric organ for his following birthday. This was after six months of accordian lessons at The  Milton Mann Studios.  The eleven year old Duane could hardly sleep at night for hearing the sounds of music in his head.

It wasn't long before he began composing and recording himself playing and singing into two separate "condenser-mike" tape recorders; then playing or singing back and forth between the two, recording each time.  It was the best way he could hear all the parts at once and learn what music could do,  beginning a serious life-long-passion within him.  He thanks BOTH of his parents for that.

From 1979 until 1984, Duaniac-DjMe was a member of a six man, one woman RnB/Pop band called, Ziphoid.  They produced all of their own demos and were an integral part of his musical training in vocals, recording, producing, mixing, and for some time, performing in Los Angeles and Las Vegas night clubs.

Through the band, Duaniac-DjMe became associated with the great and respected drummer, James Gadson, who taught him the importance of being "in the pocket" and to let the metronome become a part of his musicality.  It was a lesson well learned.

Gadson also trained Duaniac-DjMe in studio vocal technique, overdubbing, vocal harmonies and breathing excercises.  He was also very key in getting him and his band ready to perform in the local clubs in L.A. and Vegas.

The band's demos caught the attention of Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Ralph Johnson (Let's Groove Tonight), and Gloria Jones of Motown fame, and co-writer of "If I Were Your Woman".  They co-produced the band on several polished tracks. 

After a few stops and starts, the band members went their own separate ways.  Still, Duaniac-DjMe found himself continuing to write music, as well as learn about analog multi-track & digital recording techniques, playing keyboards and programming drums & percussion.

Duaniac-DjMe says...
"I love music period.  In multiple genres.  I'm an avid FILM buff and a big fan of old & new media technologies.  I have an affinity for 1920s thru the 1990s American Music styles.  Like the kind found in Hollywood movies of the times.  Many of those rhythms are from Jazz/Blues/& RnB origins".

Duaniac/DjMe enjoys revisiting classic styles and "eras of sound".  Particularly the jazzy mute trumpet of the 1930s, the classic soul 70s strings, 80s and 90s synth and bass fx and a whole gamut of drums and percussion.

These are largely instrumental tracks, and are tributes to what Duaniac/DjMe has absorbed from watching movies, listening to music (since 1965 when he was four years old) and from working with some amazing & inspiring musicians, vocalists and songwriters.
