The new dub Album from Ariwa/Mad Professor is celebrating the African/Caribbean folk hero Anansi.

Anansi is one of the few things that survived the Atlantic Crossing, and the transition  from free African citizens, to exiles in the western world.
Despite a situation where it was forbidden to speak in their native tongues, Anansi and the dubby, percussive African melodies, survived.

For 18 years, from 1969 to 1987, Clinton Fearon was the bass player, vocalist, composer and lyricist for one of the most successful roots reggae bands of all time, The Gladiators. Add to that his parallel career as house musician for Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One and Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Black Ark Studio, two of the most famous Jamaican producers you could ever hope to meet, and you begin to see why today Clinton Fearon is such an influential and respected musician.

'Heart And Soul', his new entirely acoustic album that here includes 2 bonus tracks, bears witness to his early work with the Gladiators as the bulk of the songs were written during that time. It's not the first acoustic album he's recorded but it is the first on which he plays every single instrument. Rhythm, bass and acoustic guitars, congas, calabash, cabasa, cowbell and comb, not forgetting his 'wooden frog' and the ping of a spoon against glasses of water; all are pure, undiluted Clinton.

“My music is roots reggae from the island of Jamaica. I grew up deep in the hills, up in St. Catherine, surrounded by nature, beauty and hard work. Even as a child I knew I wanted to be a musician and began my career singing in church and at school, and eventually built my own guitar. As a teenager, my journeys took me to Kingston where I met many musicians and eventually began writing and recording music. I write from my heart. The world is full of inspiration ... nature, people, politics, love. I write about them all. Clinton Fearon - On The Other Side (from 'Heart and Soul' available 11/02/13)

“Black Roots”, the eponymously named debut album, was originally released in 1983 on Kick Records, by which time the band was established as one of the UK's leading live acts with a strong repertoire of socially aware songs reflecting the issues of the day. When it came to their first album, they chose eight of their strongest tracks and assembled what was to become one of the classic British reggae albums of the decade.

Featuring 8 songs “The Father”, “Survival”, “Juvenile Delinquent”, “What Them 'A Do”, “Opportunity”, “Tribal War”, “Africa” and “Move On”, the album covers themes of social alienation, deprivation, repatriation, RastafarI, violence within the black community and ends, with the tale of a failing relationship. Three decades later, many of the songs are just as relevant and provide the perfect complement to their latest recordings.

It was re-issued Bristol Archive Records on vinyl in 22nd April 2013 to coincide with Record Store Day.  The release on vinyl was strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide. 400 copies were made be available for Record Store Day, 22nd April 2013, at participating retailers and feature a facsimile of the original sleeve, whilst 100 copies will be available directly from Bristol Archive Records and very select retailers and feature a unique handmade screen printed sleeve as well as being individually numbered, a very special edition.

This was the first time that this album was available on vinyl for twenty-five years and demand outstripped supply.

This release was made available by Nubian Records on digital platforms. Here is an opportunity to stream or download either this song or the full album that is still in great demand from old and new fans alike.
