Proposal:
We seek to create an audiovisual reinterpretation of the Catholic Mass in Latin, in counterpoint with Kichwa prayers and music honoring Pachamama (Mother Earth). With choreography filmed in a natural setting, this collaboration will incorporate an original Mass composition for choir by Erik Spangler, with inserted collaborative pieces which sample from the Mass while highlighting sounds from nature, singing in Kichwa, and Cañari instruments from Ecuador.

Presented as a film, the robed singers of the choir will process through a forest and form a circle in a clearing. As they sing each movement of the Mass, four dancers will represent an abstraction of the ritual actions of the priest and attendants in a Catholic service, while blending them with aspects of Kichwa ceremonial actions. As an expression of religious syncretism, this project will pay homage to the magical and transformative qualities of the Latin Mass, and its ancient musical heritage, while seeking to reconcile the painful history of colonialism and forced conversion which the Catholic Church has imposed on indigenous people. We also recognize the role of the Church in creating unity across different nations. 

We offer our reinterpretation of this liturgy with an infusion of voices, sounds, and symbols relating to what has been neglected or marginalized in the social history of the Church. We aim to bring the Mass into dialogue with the feminine aspect of divinity, with the consciousness of the Earth and the elements, with indigenous spiritual traditions, cosmology, and language. Through this collaboration we hope to inspire a greater sense of universality and connection with the needs of our planet.

A continuous mix of chopped samples from vinyl records (from my own record collection and Shodekeh Talifero's records that he was preparing to sell), VHS (the incredible film "Latcho Drom"), and my own compositions/studio electronics. All parts recorded through finger drumming on my Akai MPC Live - resurrected from the dead after some months out of commission, edited and mixed in Ableton Live.

Erik Spangler (a.k.a. DJ Dubble8) is a composer and electronic musician working within a wide range of listening environments. As a turntablist and controllerist DJ, Spangler performs live remixes of his own compositions along with found-sound improvisations, through solo performances or in an ensemble context. His compositions have been performed across the United States and internationally from Canada to China, by groups including the Atlantic Brass Quintet, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and International Contemporary Ensemble. Along with producer Wendel Patrick, Dubble8 is co-founder of Baltimore Boom Bap Society, a forum for improvised and experimental hip hop in collaboration with musicians from diverse genres.
