Phobiq Podcast 032 with Sasha Carassi

We kickstart the week with a lush remix of Lyric Hood’s latest track ‘Let Me Tell You’ from UK jungle master Kayrem. The breakbeat tip of the original leans on blissful pads, tempestuous breaks & melancholic whispers of dance floor bliss.

Lyric Hood, the daughter of Detroit techno pioneer Robert Hood returns with brand new soul soaked techno goodness, breathing new life into the history of Detroit techno. Lyric has been releasing music with her father since 2016, when the duo announced their ‘Floorplan’ alias which became an unstoppable family duo.

Under her Floorplan alias, Lyric has released a multitude of iconic house & techno anthems including; Never Grow Old, Baby Baby, Tell You No Lie, We Magnify His Name & a many more. A common soulful theme runs through each Floorplan records and speaks words of faith through pounding four to the floor rhythms.

In recent times Lyric has been releasing solo records on Hood’s M-Plant imprint. Lyric has been pushing a deep and tough style of techno that is reminiscent of vintage Detroit techno and has the Floorplan soulful stamp all over it.

Today we premiere Kayrem’s remix which is a euphoric rendition of the original, as the jungle maestro moves on a more housey tip with familiar blissful breaks running through the track. Kayrem calls on heavenly pads and breathtaking subs, as the vocal meanders around the melancholic yet ecstatic track.

OCTVS: It was Jeremy (aka JPLS) who turned me onto the RAZOR plug-in from Native Instruments which, when running thru the different patches on a channel strip with some heavy side chain going on, i came across the "Broken Jetpack" sound and it was instant. It sounded like a rave siren, a call to arms sort of thing with peaks and lows. So yeah, sometimes the hook/music comes before I've worked out what I want to do with the drums or bassline. At the time I was starting to play the classic "Doppelwhipper" by Gabriel Ananda in my sets again and it had this sort of "pimp" or "bling" thing going on that I'd always loved so that helped shape my ideas about the kind of vibe and groove OCTVS should have. The reaction to the record was interesting as quite a few DJs reacted more positively to the mellower b-side, "Debris." But I like to evoke strong reactions with my music or DJ sets so I was nevertheless happy with this release and it certainly rocked the club:-)

Debris: Coming from a dub background during my early acid jazz/hip-hop days in Washington, DC, I'd always wanted to do something in that vein production-wise; something King Tubby or On-U Sound mixed with my long-time love of what Mark and Moritz from Basic Channel were doing with their Rhythm & Sound project. This is me just having fun in the studio with effects and getting outside my comfort zone a bit by doing something aimed straight at the mellower DJs and dancefloors . The feedback was far more positive than I'd imagined so guess I'll have to explore more of that territory with future singles. - Dubfire

The original is by two very young and talented Medellin-based producers who I'd had my eye on for years. We later connected and they started to send me quite a lot of demos and this one stood out the most. It was just one of those tracks that harked back to the old Tenaglia marathon sets that I'd loved so much, especially the stream-of-consciousness pitched down spoken vox. And I loved the tense, hi-pitched string in the background and the moody deep stabs. I wasn't even sure that I'd sign it as my release schedule was already quite full but every time I'd play it out I'd think about doing a remix as I felt that I could do some sort of driving, epic, alternate version. As I recall it was one of those remixes that was FUN to work on because the original parts were so great. I'm quite happy with the mix I did, especially the long, drawn out intro. And I think that it helped the boys gain some more exposure.
