On the 30th December 2013, myself and DJ Stryda met up and put this mix together. For those that aren't familiar with Stryda, he has been a stalwart veteran in the roots scene in Bristol for many years and is half of the internationally acclaimed group, Dubkasm [https://soundcloud.com/dubkasm]

The aim of this mix, much like the other recent roots mixes I have put together, was to piece together and showcase an array of sound and styles that have influenced the music that both me and Stryda create, records that have helped form a foundation for us as musicians and selectors. 

I chose some favourites of mine from Stryda's vast record collection and we started recording. A journey in to dub.

Some background history on this track title, straight from Dubkasm:
If you lived or spent time in St Pauls back then you know what you'd go and pick up at Black Door!
 This is one of the most evocative tracks of the LP for us as it conjures up a particular feeling and atmosphere. Walking through St Pauls towards a session and hearing the rumble of the bass from a distance, getting closer feeling the excitement and hearing the searing echoes and sirens coming into focus. That dark, dread atmosphere is something that will always stay with us. When we listened to Jah Shaka’s Commandments series, that’s what came into your mind - those sessions and the intense vibe. The first sound of muted guitar and Dub Judah’s growling bass takes us right back to that teenage era and those feelings.

Dubkasm - Black Door

Bristol’s Dubkasm is an absolute pillar of the worldwide roots, dub, and sound system movement.  In fact it’s hard to imagine the contemporary UK dub scene without them. Massive releases on Peng! Sound, Bristol Archive, ZamZam, and especially their own Sufferah’s Choice and Dubkasm labels have made Stryda & Digistep household names among lovers of contemporary sound system reggae.  Holding down and forwarding traditional dubplate culture for 25 years now, “Two X Two” showcases two slices of two different tunes, both in a raw steppers style, and demonstrates why they are among the world’s most beloved groups, a link back to the elder generations of Bristol sound, and a beacon to the younger.
 
“Discipline,” presented in two pieces, cuts to the chase with a massive, relentless, fully saturated digital bassline blasting straight into the future of dubwise steppers.  No surprise that it has a ‘Year 3000’ vibe, as it was, in Stryda’s words “originally built for Iration Steppas to run at Teachings In Dub against his pupil Sinai Sound.  All those who remember the dubplate special version “schooool him iyaaaah..!!”  If the main mix, "Discipline", feels extra heady for a ‘Part 1,’ the "Lights On Mix" charts a course even further into reverb space with the tape echo running mad and the snares ricocheting to infinity.

Opening with a beautifully resonant piano figure, “The Key” featuring Ashanti Selah is another propulsive steppers, also presented in two pieces, this one with a galloping live-drums feel, Digi’s sax surfacing majestically through the flurry of syndrum and rim shots.  Of “The Key” Stryda says “it’s been played by Aba Shanti-I on dubplate for the past couple of years, and there is a Keety Roots vocal and horns cut which rumour has it will see the light of day next year…” Stay tuned!!

This week my guest is Stryda from Dubkasm in Bristol. Stryda is a prominent figure in the reggae & sound system arena, he started out on Pirate Radio back in the 90s and is now maybe best known as being one-half of the mighty Dubkasm. He is also promoter of the legendary ’Teachings In Dub’ nights in Bristol and is about to launch a new Radio show. As well as all things Dubkasm and Teachings in Dub We talked a lot about the city of Bristol, a city that has given Vibronics so much support over the years.

Dubkasm are comprised of childhood friends Digistep and DJ Stryda, who kicked off their dub project in the mid-'90s before going on to launch their Sufferah's Choice label in 2003 in order to showcase their studio productions. Their 2009 debut album 'Transform I' was a culmination of their work so far, collecting tracks from their previous 12-inches and including vocal turns from Dub Judah, Levi Roots and Afrikan Simba. A dub version of the entire record along with a remix CD completed the Transform I Trilogy in 2010.  

Dubkasm continue to push out a positive message through quality roots and dub reggae productions and regular live shows across the globe.
