'The Impact of the Nine Years War on the continental Irish: Henry Piers in Rome and Spain' by Dr Brian MacCuarta (Archivum Romanum Societatis Iesu). 

Writing in 2003, Felicity Heal suggests that for the period before 1600 it is not possible to describe the religious life of the laity in Ireland. On 9 June 1595 two men in their late 20s – Henry Piers, and Philip Draycot - set sail from Dublin to go to Rome. The recent discovery of the travel memoir of Henry Piers, of Co. Westmeath, recounting his journey to and from Rome 1595-7, affords the possibility of exploring the Catholic mentalite of one layman in late sixteenth-century Ireland. Conversion between the various denominations has been little studied for sixteenth-century Ireland. It is possible to explore this theme in the case of one individual. Piers, his parents, his wife and her family were adherents of the Established Church. The journey to the Continent arose from Henry’s embracing of Catholicism, a transition arising largely from contacts with the English recusant community. While on the Continent, his engagement with the English Catholic community in Rome and in Spain, and with various Irish and English encountered there, throws light on the ambiguous situation of Elizabeth’s subjects in Catholic Europe during the turbulent 1590s.

The 6th Annual Tudor & Stuart Ireland Interdisciplinary Conference took place at NUI Galway in August, 2016. The conference was generously supported by: an NUI Galway President's Award for Research Excellence (awarded to Prof. Steven Ellis); the Moore Institute, NUI Galway; the Discipline of History, NUI Galway and the Society for Renaissance Studies.

Brian MacCuarta. Impact of Nine Years War on the continental Irish: Henry Piers in Rome and Spain

Declan Burke, crime author and journalist, reads from his novel 'Absolute Zero Cool', and explains how he had come to write the book. Recorded in front of a live audience at the Central Library in September 2011 as part of its 'Crime and the City' series.

Declan Burke is an author, journalist and noted blogger. As the owner of the Crime Always Pays website he keeps tabs on the crime writing scene, paying special attention to works and writers of Irish interest.  He also pens a monthly Crime Beat column for The Irish Times Review supplement. A multi-talented chap he edited the recent bestselling Down these Green Streets anthology which drew together contributions from the cream of Irish crime writers and commentators on the craft, context and critical relevance of the crime genre in this Emerald Isle.

Declan reads from his novel Absolute Zero Cool, which was shortlisted for the Bord Gáis Irish Book Award and in between segments explains how he came to write this well regarded book.

Questions initially focused on the writing process, his publishing history, online promotion and his blog. Discussion afterwards ranged on everything from blowing up hospitals to crime writing in Ireland.
