This is a mix I put together for the Concrete Folk Tape Takeover on Noods Radio September 2024. I was asked to produce a 60 minute mix tape which I decided to focus on music from Bristol, where Noods is based. Side A of the tape covers reggae, dub and post-punk from the late 70's and early 80s and then side B moves onto trip hop and other experimental dubwise sounds from the 90's to the present day.

Wow! I was excited as soon as I saw this link up between Italy's Babe Roots and Japan's New Dub Hall label then I listened to the clips and got a whole lot more excited!

A-sider "Mi Feel It" featuring dub poet Wayne (who Babe Roots have worked with previously on their "Through We" 12" released on System Music really is something very, very special indeed. Sitting somewhere between dub techno, dub poetry and golden era 90's trip hop (think Blue Lines-era Massive Attack...) it's the sort of thing dubwise dreams are made of. This one ticks so many boxes for me it's just rediculous. Absolutely amazing. 

Hoeever it doesn't stop there. Flip it over and we're treated to the soulful rootical dub techno/dub poetry of the appropriately named 'Roots" featuring none other than Undefined's very own Ohkuma on drums who provides percussive backing to Wayne's deeper than deep dub poetry.

Two brilliantly diverse and innovative dubwise sounds on one mighty fine 10" dubplate style. Can't wait to get my hands on this one!

HOLY Metal Box Mix

This is a mix focusing on percussive dub and roots. I put it together after a DJ gig where I had the pleasure of playing a longer than normal set which enabled me to be a bit self indulgent in the first hour and just play percussive drum based music which seemed like a nice way to set the tone for the rest of the evening. When I got back home I thought it was a good opportunity to try to capture that moment by putting  a quick mix together before the records returned to my chaotic filing system (or lack of it) probably never to be seen again for several years.

Drums (in particular Nyabinghi) play a central role in reggae and dub and I hope this mix captures some of the spiritual transcendence they deliver.

For the second release on the excellent Magistrate label London-based Aketi Ray meet up with Berlin's Hidden Sequence for a jazz-dub soudnclash of epic proportions.

Hidden Sequence take control of the A-side with their dub reinterpretations of three Aketi Ray tracks and then on the flip you're treated to the original cuts.  I've always felt there's not enough crossover between the worlds of dub and jazz so it's great to hear a record like this where the two genres are so effortlessly and successfully merged creating a refreshing new sound that brings the best of both worlds together.

This is a very, very special one...

Marking the final release on one of my favourite record labels of all time, the mighty ZamZam Sounds, is this very special 7" double back covering both numbers 99 and 100 in the series. I remember first discovering ZamZam (which was when I bought ZamZam 1!) and having one of those life affirming moments when you realise there are other people out there on the same wavelength as you. A vinyl only label releasing high quality progressive dub music on limited run 7"s in beautiful hand screen printed sleeves. Boom! I was hooked....

It's amazing and heartwarming to see the label go from strength to strength since then and to reach it's century of releases here. I can't think of many occasions when I've played out and not dropped at least one ZamZam tune which is testament to the quality and the diversity of music the label has provided a home for. On top of all that Tracy and Ezra (who run the label) are really lovely people who have created a real "ZamZam Fam" both in terms of the artists featured on the label and the dedicated community of fans spread across the world like me.

So it is with a tinge of sadness that this release marks their last ever on the label but all good things must some to an end and it's always good to bow out on a high, which they most definitely are with this exceptional release featuring two legends of the dub world and long time ZamZam favourites - Bristol's Dubkasm and Gorgon Sound. Not only do we get an absolutely killer tune here from each of them but we're also treaated to them remixing each others tracks which (in true clever thinking ZamZam style) get pressed up on the B-sides of the other piece of vinyl to their own tunes so you can play them back to back in a showcase/discomix style.

And off course as you'd expect the presentation is second to none. The two 7's are housed in a single full colour offset-printed, double-die cut gatefold jacket with additional silver screen print. From looking at the pictures above it is indeed an object of great beauty befitting of such an epic release.

The very welcome return of longtime Dubwise Vinyl favourite Elijah Minnelli with seven brand new tracks that further explore the unique sonic realm he has built joining the dots between dub, cumbia and folk.

Here he is also joined by two musical legends for the two vocal cuts that sit alongside five deep hypnotic dubs.
