Hadrat ’Abd al-Ghânî an-Nablusî [d. 1143 A.H. (1731)] wrote in his Al-hadîqa: “The 7th âyat of sûrat al-Anbiyâ says, ‘Ask the men of dhikr what you do not know.’ ‘Dhikr’ means ‘knowledge’. Habib Ali al-Jifri taught three classes on the portrait (shama'il) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned in the famous tradition of Hind ibn Abi Hala.

Habib Ali introduced the topic by explaining that four sciences contribute to the study of the Prophet ﷺ:
1. Prophetic biography (Sira)
2. Prophetic description (Shama'il)
3. Special Qualities of the Prophet (Khasa'is)
4. Proofs of Prophecy (Dala'il)

Studying the prophetic portrait is important because it illustrates the comprehensive beauty of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Beauty is both inward and outward and shama'il encompasses both.

Habib Ali concluded the first lesson with a reminder that the message (Islam) and the messenger (Prophet Muhammad) are inextricably linked. He said that the message is not detached from the messenger, the message is in the messenger and the message is the messenger ﷺ.

In the third and final class Habib Ali concluded his commentary on the tradition of Hind with a reminder to the students to long, yearn and wish for seeing and meeting the Prophet ﷺ.

The closing gathering of the Spring Lodge Retreat 2015.

Habib Ali offered the students a counsel, an advice and made a request.

He counselled them to make use of four times in the day, as was advised by his teacher al-Habib Umar bin Hafiz to students many years ago. They are the 15 minutes before the morning (fajr) prayer and 15 minutes after it, and 15 minutes before maghrib prayer and 15 minutes after it. If possible, give life to the time between the morning prayer and sunrise (ishrāq) and between the early evening (maghrib) and late evening (isha) prayer. If this is not possible then try it at least once a week.

Habib Ali advised the students to have mercy and compassion upon those whose hearts have been filled with rancour and hatred. He said we should pray for them .

Lastly, Habib Ali requested that both the scholars and students pardon and forgive him for any mistake and shortcoming. He also requested the students to pardon and forgive the organisers for any errors and to forgive each other because "the moment in which a Divine mercy descends on your heart is greater than any mistake or error the organisers could make."

Ali Hussain is a doctoral candidate in Islamic studies in the department of Near Eastern Studies, University of Michigan. His research focuses on Jesus in the thought and writings of the 12th/13th century Muslim mystic Muhyi al-Din Ibn al-ʿArabi (d. 1240). He's also interested in sacred bodies as tools for mythic storytelling in Sufism.
