Khandro Yeshe Tsogyal addresses this vast and profound prayer to Guru Rinpoche on the occasion of his departure to Copper-Coloured Mountain. The prayer is a treasure teaching, or terma, of Pema Lingpa and contains within itself a condensed and complete guide to the Buddhadharma. Yeshe Tsogyal instructs us in how to develop and maintain a relationship with the guru, how to eliminate obstacles, how and where we should practice, and how we can develop bodhicitta. The prayer instils confidence in our basic purity and goodness and reinforces the inseparability of our minds from the mind of the guru.

Practising vipassana is all about experiencing life directly. Sadhana is a systematic means to reach a goal. Though traditional sadhana practice might involve ritual offerings and visualisation of deities, the ultimate goal is to have this direct experience. Traditionally, vipassana practice is associated with sitting straight and focusing on the breath. This practice has much merit and should be upheld, but to apply vipassana in the modern world we need to adopt a much more abundant and infinite approach. We need to train our minds through the contemplation of impermanence, “unsatisfactoriness” (dukkha) and emptiness to find the courage to go outside our comfort zones, to see the world as it is and find liberation through a direct experience of the truth.

Invited to visit the city of Vaiśālī, which has been ravaged by a terrible epidemic, the Buddha instructs Ānanda to stand at the city’s gate and recite a proclamation, a long mantra, and some verses that powerfully evoke spiritual well-being. Ānanda does so, and the epidemic comes to an end. One of the mahāsūtras related to the literature of the Vinaya, this text, like other accounts of the incident, has traditionally been recited during times of personal or collective illness, bereavement, and other difficulties.

What is Ngöndro and why will you benefit?

Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche (1) said in the  introduction of his book "A Cascading Waterfall of Nectar" ~  As an example of the importance of the preliminary practices [Ngöndro], if someone wants to build a special house or temple, the most important part of the construction is the foundation in order for the building to be stable.
Similarly, Lama Tharchin Rinpoche taught, “Ngöndro is called a preliminary practice because it lays a foundation for the two main stages of Vajrayana practice: the creation stage and the completion stage. Since it contains all paths to the realization of enlightenment, every effort should be made to complete the Ngöndro in order to fully cultivate and realize its profound benefits.”

Ngöndro is the gateway to the advanced practices of Dzogchen, as well. The lamas of the Vajrayana Foundation have required students to finish their Ngöndro in order to participate in Rushen (a secret practice that comprises the Dzogchen preliminaries), the annual Trekchӧd (Cutting Through Solidity) teachings, and in other advanced practices at Pema Osel Ling.

(1) Thinley Norbu Rinpoche or Dungsé Thinley Norbu (Tib. གདུང་སྲས་ཕྲིན་ལས་ནོར་བུ་, Wyl. gdung sras phrin las nor bu) (1931-2011) was a prominent modern teacher in the Nyingma lineage. As the eldest son of Dudjom Rinpoche, he was trained in Tibet and became a main Dudjom Tersar lineage holder. Recognized as an incarnation of Tulku Trimé Özer, one of seven sons of Dudjom Lingpa, he was also considered to be an emanation of Longchenpa. Having lived in Bhutan, he finally settled in New York (USA) where he gathered students. He authored many books in English. Among his sons are Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche and Dungse Garab Rinpoche.
