Māori Soul, Funk and Disco records from 1967 - 1985 in celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and its beginnings in 1972, New Zealand.

This mix pays homage to groups like Ngā Tamatoa, Te Reo Māori Society and the 30,000+ petitioners who provoked parliament to get with the program for Māori language rights, with a soundtrack starting in the era.

All tracks have been sourced from vinyl.

A Māori Soul Mixtape

In the spirit of ANZAC, Dujon Cullingford (NZ) and Mark Egan (AUS) throw down an allied mix of Antipodean groove straight from their dedicated downunder record vaults of Funk, Soul, Disco and Rock.

From the year that brought us Stranger Things, Trump and Harambe comes the Kiwi Beat Tape Vol 1.

It was 2016 and local beatmakers were on fire so I started a mix to showcase the array of aural offerings. Recently, I revisited and finished the beat tape for NZMM 2022. Enjoy!

I DJ'd this set at Radikal Forze Jam in Da Nang, Vietnam to a beach full of dancers. Vibe! I didn't record the set live so here's the re-recording which stays true to the simple mixing on the night with danceable tracks, local Viet bangers, and some of my fav go-to edits for the dancers.

Woody - Satisfaction Guaranteed (1978)

Husband / Wife duo Joy Yates and Dave MacRae are the nucleus of Pacific Eardrum, boasting heavy credentials from there time overseas. Not only is Pacific Eardrum the best NZ band name ever but their 3 stellar albums between 1977-80 have some lush works of jazz-funk between them and are often under-appreciated by the NZ funk fan.

Here they return home and lay down the funk with an all star cast of seasoned musicians: Martin Winch, Bruce Lynch, Frank Gibson Jnr, Brian Smith and Colin Hemmingsen.

Joy Yates leads with karanga and the funk ensues.

Pacific Eardrum - Listen (1980)

Rock Candy was playing six nights-a-week, 10pm to 3am, for five 30 - 40 minute sets at the time of this recording in September 1978.
Playing Top 40 Pop and R&B covers plus learning new sets every week as the house band for weekly touring artists kept them busy. Even so they wrote and recorded 2 original tracks for the Auckland Music LP.

I'm Gonna Fall In Love Tonight is an obscure upbeat groover with a flute solo for added measure.

Rock Candy - I'm Gonna Fall In Love Tonight (1978)

Taken from the obscure 4-part Radio Trax LP series produced by Radio New Zealand, 'You Are On My Mind' is 1860 band's groovy cover of Chicago. Wellington's 1860 Band is a go-to name for New Zealand Funk so any music that is not found on their one and only stellar LP is worth shouting from the rooftops about!

You can find their wicked Billy Cobham cover 'Taurian Matador' on DJ Kinetic's YouTube channel which is taken from the same Radio Trax LP.

1860 Band - You Are On My Mind (1978)

Quincy Conserve were a tight ensemble who released multiple albums and singles between 1968-75. Held in high regard by fans, musicians and now record collectors, their Wellington brand of musicianship and punchy combination of funk, soul and jazzy rock is well appreciated and documented.

Even so, some of their funkiest work is found on non-album b-sides and consequently flies under the radar compared to their popular rhythms.

Super Strut is a fiery 4-minute cover of Brazilian jazz-funk artist Eumir Deodato. Found on their last 45 release as a b-side they sure finished their recording history with a bang!

Quincy Conserve - Super Strut (1975)

Full of energetic American soul covers, somehow this T-Kiwi's album barely has an internet trace.

Recorded on the small Australian Violets Holiday label and put out on Interfusion nearly 50 years ago, it is a in-your-face tribute for a showband that had the south pacific hotel circuit leaving "rave notices" everywhere they performed.

in the vein of Sly and the Family Stone's 1969 version, the T-Kiwi's plow straight into the funk with big rhythm and fun vocals that deliver this positive message.

T-Kiwi's - You Can Make It If You Try (1972)

NZ guitar wiz Martin Winch pulls together a flaming all-star cast for this enigmatic release from Sahara that floats between the worlds of jazz-rock and fusion.

With musicians like Billy Kristian, Peter Blake, Frank Gibson Jr, Ross Burge, Mike Booth and both Winch brothers you know you are in for a ride. What's more, replacement drummer and bass player jump in on the b side.

The Sahara LP front cover is an obvious ode to famous Jazz fusion group Brand X's 'Masques' LP cover, featuring a middle eastern woman in hijab.

Boogie Blues is the funk track of the album oozing celebration and fun.

Erana Clark was singing professionally singing from age 11 as she was encouraged to enter TV shows and national competitions.

Coincidentally, this track was a 4th place getter at the 1979 South Pacific Song Contest from a 19 yr old Erana, produced by Gary Daverne,

This hidden Disco gem was buried along with the non-placing but 40 years later it has been made available.

Grown out of Living Force, with roots in Ticket, Space Farm and Underdogs; Spyz rip into a fresh decade with a new sound.

This super tight b-side banger is worth sinking your teeth into. A little rare and expensive. I'd assume the musicians previous work in their better known rock bands draws the attention away from the two 45's that Spyz put out in the early 80's

Spyz - Little Girl (1981)

Lee Connolly & Steve Gerrish's Past Kalylee album came out in 1982 in the same lush vein as After The Carnival by Graeme Gash, and both on Siren Records months apart.

Voodoo Groove is a slowed-down foot-stomper with plenty of refreshing fun between choruses. Released on 45 also, this is Lee and Steve's only release together although you can find them credited on other releases, playing and producing.

Loafers? Check. Yacht? Check! Sail off into safe waters with this local version of Christian Yacht Rock classic 'Living Without Your Love' by The Imperials (featuring Abraham Laboriel on bass) which is very similar to Toto's Georgy Porgy.

Certain Sounds provide tougher drums but manage to keep it snazzy like a Sunday morning with their six-piece line up for this Let's Fly LP.

Introducing a satire disco track about how disco sucks which is incidentally quite a good disco track.

Neville "on the level" Purvis was the hilarious TV persona Arthur Baysting took on in the late 70's on his Neville Purvis Family show. 

This record came out on the coveted Vertigo label in a comic book style and although the lyrics of the song lowkey garbage disco, it has drum breaks, fun colloquialism and a bunch of funk!

Well, I know nothing of the Warren Sisters except this seems to be their only record (45) and it was recorded and released through the small but dedicated Tala label based in Levin.

I have seen the dates 1968 and 1972 thrown around. One thing is for sure: the song was made famous by The Association in 1967 so covering it in 1968 while it was hot property is convincing.

Disco Down Under Volume 1

I started the Disco Downunder mix (check it out) with this super rare cover of the NZ party classic 'Sweet Inspiration' which was originally sung in 1967 by US girl group Sweet Inspirations (which featured Whitney Houstons Mum Cissy and Dionne Warwick Mum Lee) but it wad made popular here in Aotearoa by samoan trio, the Yandall Sisters.

This version is in the vein of the Yandalls however it is definitely a faster disco version complete with great vocals and solid musicianship. What's funny about it, is that it's a NZ British Paints advert so the lyrics are urging you to consider paint choices and interior design. Luckily the quality of the track overides the novelty of the lyrical content.

1 or 2 people guessed it could be Jacqui Fitzgerald on vocals who recorded many jingles in this period. I'm not 100% sure but i am sure this is a banger 😀
