Babla & Kanchan were an Indian husband-wife musical group best known for work in the Chutney music and Desi Folk music genres. This group was popular throughout the Caribbean. They performed together for forty years until Kanchan died in 2004. Originating from Mumbai, India, their music is well known through the world, especially in countries like Canada, United States, Trinidad, Guyana, the Netherlands, Mauritius, Suriname and England. Babla is the younger brother of famous music director Kalyanji Anandji.

Babla, A Drummer, Percussionist, Live Performer, Music Composer & Producer, (ORIGINAL NAME – LAXMICHAND V SHAH), born 1942 from India , started his band popularly known as “Babla Orchestra” in 1962 and since then has performed more than 1000 shows across the globe.

Dandy Raas / Garba Raas, a form of Folk Dance from the state of Gujarat was musically redefined in the 1970’s by Babla through his live Navratri Music Performances in places like India, USA, Australia, Singapore, Canada, London & many more.

Many songs Kanchan sang were remakes of older songs by West Indian locals, or were soca classics or by Sundar Popo from Trinidad. Her producer and manager was filmmaker and easy96.com radio personality, Rohit Jagessar.

Budram Holass was born Dec. 29th 1954 to Samdaye and Harry Holass at Granville, Trinidad and Tobago. From his early childhood, Budram and his siblings were tutored by their parents, who were versatile singers and musicians. His father was well-versed in Hindi and Bhojpuri. His career started at a very early age singing in the family group “Amar Geet” and gradually he emerged on his own. He entered many competitions over the years, winning many titles. He has toured many countries including Suriname, Guyana, Canada, USA, Florida, Mauritius and India. He is well-versed in Bhojpuri and sings a variety of songs in this tongue. Being an all-round singer, he sings classical songs, semi-classical, wedding and folk songs, biraha, film songs, devotional songs and much more. He has released more than 20 CD’s which are currently available internationally. Budram spends a great deal of his time teaching different types of songs in a cultural centre built in Granville in his honour “Budram Holass Cultural Centre.” Budram was selected in March 2000 to attend the World Bhojpuri Conference in Mauritius where he presented a paper on the Bhojpuri influence in Trinidad. He has established a six-member entertainment group “Amar Geet” that give performances at all occasions and celebrations. Budram Holass has performed in many parts of India. He has been a finalist in several competitions for the past few years in Trinidad and received numerous awards from many organisations for his sterling contribution to culture.
