With support from DJs as diverse as David Rodigan and Mark Lamarr, plus support slots over the last twelve months for Fat Freddy’s Drop and The Selecter, Brighton dub outfit Resonators are starting to cause a real storm both in the reggae community and beyond.

As one of the most exciting live dub bands the UK has to offer, Resonators take in all the influences of the original Jamaican sounds and rhythms, and bring it forward into the here and now. Fronted by two soulful and innovative female vocalists, this 8-piece troupe generate a sound which is equally strong and sweet, conscious and fun.

Resonators musicians have played support to acclaimed reggae artists including The Wailers, Horace Andy, Lee Perry and Derrick Morgan to name a few. They have collaborated live shows with Roots Garden, the UK’s longest running reggae night, and have gained a strong following across the national festival and live circuit with their original positive sounds.

The new single, “Surrender” is an uplifting, positively charged piece, with vocals led by Kassia Zermon and Faye Houston, and comes complete with that all important dub. It’s the taste of things to come for the band’s debut album for Wah Wah 45s, due to be released this June!

What tribute to the golden era of hip hop would be complete without some straight up battle rhymes? To that end we’re shining this week’s spotlight on Roxanne Shante who was involved in two of the most memorable battles of all time: the Roxanne Wars and The Bridge Wars (Juice Crew vs. Boogie Down Productions). “Big Mama” is a non-stop barrage of dope punchlines aimed at rival female MCs - classic! We fused Shante’s irascible battle rhymes with the raw, heavy funk grooves of UK multi-instrumentalist and producer Adam Gibbons (aka Lack Of Afro). This joint will have your head nodding and fingers snapping. Enjoy!
