Journeying through the intersections of UKG and house, Smokey Bubblin’ B is consistently responsible for bringing out stellar underground dance tracks. Previously making outings on Conducta’s Kiwi Rekords, Low Steppa’s Simma Black, his latest offering is a self-released record, and his second jungle release to date. The two-tracked ‘Elysium/Special’ makes use of those old skool flavours, and has already been picked up by the likes of Flava D, Emerald, Redlight, DJ Zinc and Heartless Crew. We’re premiering the latter, ‘Special’, below – which makes use of nostalgic live jungle MC snippets and an irresistible R&B vocal before blowing out in proper clattering drum business. “This is possibly my favourite track I’ve created to date!” Smokey Bubblin’ B says. “It encapsulates everything I think a jungle track is and should be…”

Bristol DJ and producer NOTION is a pretty notable name in the UK's bass music scene - though he's solidly cemented himself as a big player within bassline, with Holy Goof collaborations and plenty of his own material, he has also crossed over into Grime, Garage (with Conducta collabs), 140 (via White Peach Records), and dnb, with various releases and DJ sets over the years. Growing up, he developed an early interest in dance music and songwriting through a four-track recorder gifted to him by his Dad.  For his upcoming debut album 'Outsider', NOTION had a desire to rely less on features, which led him to invite his social media followers, who he recognised as a musically-inclined bunch, to submit vocals for him to use. Not only was this a way for him to form a real connection to fans during lockdown, it was a way in which he could support artists through his own platform. On the album, we'll also see a feature from Nottingham grime legend Snowy; 'Cherry', a breakbeat-sliced euphoric dnb cut is NOTION's most recent single, and it follows bass house track 'FOUND LOVE' featuring the honey-sweet vocals of singer Carrie Baxter.  For his Dummy mix, NOTION cartwheels between high energy bassline, buoyant Garage, and leads listeners out with some old Jungle favourites - weaving them in with brand new unreleased material from himself. Geoff Kirkwood is an artist for the people - not so concerned with image, status or even legacy he’s a creative who is as comfortable writing or presenting experimental symphonies and Audio Visual orchestral performances as he is delivering raucous kinetic techno to sweaty dance floors. 

Filling the spaces between his eclectic output, Kirkwood's work as Man Power has become some of his most meaningful and potent. The project began all the way back in 2014 as an anonymous series of dark remixes which culminated in a debut EP on Correspondant. Via his Man Power alias, Geoff has since gone on to show the complete picture of his sonic breadth via output for the likes of DFA, SKINT, Hivern Discs and his self-helmed Me Me Me imprint. Not just satisfied with making music, his acclaimed Us & Them parties have been reversing the grubby trends of club-night promotion, ditching advance tickets and corporate mentality in place for a focus on regional talent regardless of profile. 

Recorded live in Newcastle while opening for Leftfield's tour earlier this month, this DMY mix shows Man Power's selector skills at their very best. Spanning over two hours in length, strap in for a real journey from start to finish.

The term "legend" is thrown around a lot these days - but it's exactly how Carl Craig should be described. A second generation Detroit techno icon largely responsible for exporting the genre around the globe and connecting it to the worlds of high-art and culture, Craig has been at the forefront of music and culture for three decades and counting. 

Out now via his storied Planet E Communications label, Carl has revisited a timeless track from his early 90s Psyche alias, 'From Beyond', which offers a window into the simplistic production that helped define the early Afro-futuristic visions of Detroit techno. A seminal track in every sense of the word, it's rumoured that Craig created the track on the exact same Alesis controlled midi-808 used by Marvin Gaye on 'Sexual Healing'.  

To celebrate the 2023 edition of 'From Beyond' (available to stream here), Carl has teamed up with Ernie Guerra of Planet E to helm the latest DMY mix. 

"This mix was prepared by Erno (Ernie Guerra from Planet E), he chose a bunch of tracks he has heard me play throughout the years of traveling with me and a few others from his collection," says Carl. "The mix features my new C2 2023 mix of ‘From Beyond,’ originally composed in 1989. It was daunting to revisit ‘From Beyond’ because I wanted to make a mix that was better than the original. When I wrote ‘From Beyond,’ I was 20 years old and it was my first time in Europe, so I was excited. It was also a time when I used to compose many pieces per day, which now in all my wisdom and maturity, I take more time to compose with perfection in mind." 

He adds: "My new mix is a remix in the traditional sense, compared to what I do when I'm hired to remix. I’m happy to have revisited the original of ‘From Beyond,’ which gave me a chance to re-evaluate what I had done in 1989 versus how I do things now in 2023."

We couldn’t resist including Joe Smooth and David was very happy to sneak a Drake track in there. It’s all very chilled, and made with love, and we really hope listeners enjoy our mix.”

Knoxville, Tennessee producer Nikki Nair is the latest signing to Barely Legal’s Pretty Weird Records. Having previously made outings on Scuffed Recordings and Gobstopper, where Nikki Nair experimented with the human voice on his ‘Morphism’ EP, his latest offering finds him playing with bass stabs and old movie samples. ‘Scuzzy’ is one of two tracks on a double single coming out on Pretty Weird this Friday, and on it Nikki Nair flexes his percussive muscles with rude flair, with early support coming from the likes of Four Tet and Ben UFO.
