The term "legend" is thrown around a lot these days - but it's exactly how Carl Craig should be described. A second generation Detroit techno icon largely responsible for exporting the genre around the globe and connecting it to the worlds of high-art and culture, Craig has been at the forefront of music and culture for three decades and counting. 

Out now via his storied Planet E Communications label, Carl has revisited a timeless track from his early 90s Psyche alias, 'From Beyond', which offers a window into the simplistic production that helped define the early Afro-futuristic visions of Detroit techno. A seminal track in every sense of the word, it's rumoured that Craig created the track on the exact same Alesis controlled midi-808 used by Marvin Gaye on 'Sexual Healing'.  

To celebrate the 2023 edition of 'From Beyond' (available to stream here), Carl has teamed up with Ernie Guerra of Planet E to helm the latest DMY mix. 

"This mix was prepared by Erno (Ernie Guerra from Planet E), he chose a bunch of tracks he has heard me play throughout the years of traveling with me and a few others from his collection," says Carl. "The mix features my new C2 2023 mix of ‘From Beyond,’ originally composed in 1989. It was daunting to revisit ‘From Beyond’ because I wanted to make a mix that was better than the original. When I wrote ‘From Beyond,’ I was 20 years old and it was my first time in Europe, so I was excited. It was also a time when I used to compose many pieces per day, which now in all my wisdom and maturity, I take more time to compose with perfection in mind." 

He adds: "My new mix is a remix in the traditional sense, compared to what I do when I'm hired to remix. I’m happy to have revisited the original of ‘From Beyond,’ which gave me a chance to re-evaluate what I had done in 1989 versus how I do things now in 2023."

For the inaugural event in Montreal we teamed up with local vinyl institution, label and community hub La Rama Records to co-curate the lineup for the event. Represented by Kris Guilty, La Rama hosted a pop-up record sale with Montreal based artists and labels at the intimate OSMO X MARUSAN Café, a space merging music, coffee, and Japanese cuisine.

Shift Radio was our second collaborator and streamed this event live on their channels. Founded in late 2020 after a visit to Brussels, Audrey and Charles combined their experiences with online radio and planted a seed in the Montreal scene that grew into what Shift Radio is now: a Montreal-based independent web radio station dedicated to promoting the abundance and diversity of Montreal's electronic music scene through livestreams carefully selected by people, not algorithms.

Ahead of our club night with @musar-recordings on Friday 18th August at The Carpet Shop in Peckham, Glasgow-based producer @nightwave808 steps up to the IA MIX Series to deliver an acidic blend of house and techno packed with lysergic heat from DJ Haus, Cromby, Jerome Hill, Fear-E, Albert Van Abbe.

In our interview, Nightwave sheds light into her first steps into electronic music, her love for the city of Glasgow and residency at La Cheetah club. She also discusses the ethos behind her imprint Heka Trax, empowering women in the electronic music industry, the influence and passing of DJ Deeon and her interest in Amazonian shamanism and the organisation Barixá, which helps to support indigenous communities, organise retreats, educate and sell their arts.

Djing since the early 2000s, Chachi's musical background extends much farther back, firmly rooted in her Venezuelan background and artistic endeavors. Her steadfast commitment to the midwest underground music scene has crowned her a local marvel.

After contributing and creating some of the region's most enticing productions, her new project Bless This Mess, focuses on promoting radical inclusion & proactive engagement through music and arts as well as showcasing Female and Queer talent.

"I made this mix as I prepared for our journey to the Great Beyond this past month. Inspired by the rush of the summer heat and my recent musical experiences of the year, I hope this mix expresses how fast life comes at you. No matter how ready we are (or not), we must be able to handle anything that comes our way with compassion, grace, and a grain of salt. And we have one other half of the year left so, buckle up, buttercups!"
