Verveine’s DJing is patient, and it rewards that same patience in the listener. In this Q&A we dive into this concept and how it applies more generally to learning the art of DJing over time. Anecdotes from parties over the years – including an earlier epic set at Renate – help illustrate how Verveine has navigated the dilemmas of expressing creativity from the DJ booth.

For more than a decade, Philipp Priebe has been releasing an emotional take on house music that melds melancholic warm sounds with driving elements. It's a style that dates back to his teenage years, when he began collecting records in a small town in Germany. Over the past 22 years I have been recording & adding to a mixtape series begun in 1998 in San Francisco. I started putting together selections from the deeper, “late night” end of my record collection that almost never made their way onto regular DJ mixtapes we were all making in the late nineties. Back in the day before Uber, all those after-hours minicab rides in London were sound tracked by African & Caribbean pirate radio stations playing the most incredible Downtempo Soul, R&B, Roots and Gospel. For me, the better the DJ, the slower BPM they would have the guts to play. And here in London even today, generally speaking, the blacker the party, the slower the music (and inevitably, the hotter the vibes)…a simple equation really. This 40 hours worth of music features tracks from every genre and every era……the only thing they all have in common is that they would sound pretty dam good at 8am Sunday morning in the back of a minicab on Coldharbour Lane.
