A night out in Copenhagen (for Guardian Travel)

Alexander Paul Coe stood on Vagator Beach and looked up at a two dimensional moon; shifting like quicksilver he progressed toward the throb of classic house tropes on legs that didn’t exist on a beach that wasn’t really there. Behind the Haçienda rose and fell; grains of black sand trickling constantly across undulating dunes of movement: rendering, dispersing and re-constructing in shifting mirages of mutating forms. Across the expanse repercussions drummed and bounced, limbic phantoms gleaned from withered amygdalae constructed by a galaxies of quantum objects shuttling ceaselessly to recall the past in a bid to form the present. Vocal mandalas twirled in time & space, collages of tribes echoing out over continually recalibrating constructions: memories of civilizations past whispered on machine winds, corrupted recollections reflected in pools of shimmering mercury. Breaking above it all the sky turned super-bright, black locust masses peeling away to reveal one star hanging colossal over the melancholy mass. The moon withered to dust, rebuilding itself again from scavenged parts in some other corner of the system. Out of the collapsing inner-core the boat immigrated, skipped across the troposphere and considered. Echoes of Cabrini Green had been found in Sagittarius and James Brown still danced on Cassiopeia. A planet of buzzing atomic sands segued into the cavity and collectively they set off, ghosts of principles and the rhythms of Africa holding firm against the fluid nihilism to dance on radiation off the shoulder of Orion.
Venetian Raw M.T. has released a slew of acclaimed singles since 2013, with releases on Wicked Bass, Unrelated Records and Lobster Theremin offshoot Mörk. Constructing propulsive tracks from analogue gear, sold chassis secure dreams of melancholy synths; music that recalls the house of yesteryear perceived through a fluid future shot through with refrains of hope and loss.

The Århus-born beatsmith extraordinaire Terry Tester's career behind the decks and MPC spans nearly two decades almost solely spent within the world of hiphop. After an unintentional kebab lunch, an immediate musical connection was sparked between the label owner of Copenhagen Underground Posse and Terry, who then dived head first into house music - and what a result! Having made his label-debut with the raw, bass-heavy roller 'Change Up' included on the V/A 'Liderlige Rytmer Del 2 af 3", Terry now returns to C.U.P. with the EP 'Genealogia', showcasing his unique style of tape drum tracks, warm subby bottom ends and spacey funk melodies.

Terry Tester first surfaced in the 00's as scratch DJ for local rap legend MC Einar as well as producer and MPC-badman for several acclaimed Danish hiphop projects. As a solo beatmaker, his works of imminent soulful, boogie and jazz-influenced beats has landed him production credits for Jahi & Dwele, BBE, Brownswood Recordings, a remix commission from Marc Mac for the Visioneers project (alongside heavyweights such as DJ Jazzy Jeff and Denz), and most recently a neck-snapping debut album 'Horses and Diamonds' (2012) and follow-up 'Short Suite' (2013) on Mixed Ape Music.

Copenhagen Underground Posse (C.U.P.) is a vinyl label and music family based in Copenhagen, Denmark, dedicated to showing the world what the scene up North is about.

Our latest premiere comes from Copenhagen’s Creak Inc. 5 releases deep into the world of jazzed up electronic music - having featured the laid-back house grooves of Terry Tester, break-beat anthems of Kaidi Tetham, to the smoothest rap and r&b from Copenhagen’s own NATKAT - it’s safe to say Creak Inc. have proven themselves a go-to address for all lovers of jazz-tinged electronics.

Next up on the label is newcomer Nejrup’s debut EP. But don’t let the word debut fool you into thinking this EP is anything short of musical mastery. This is the kind of debut EP that feels as though it’s been in the works for half a lifetime, boasting remarkable instrumentation, as well as meticulous production and sound-design. Nejrup’s three original tracks, and a stellar remix by K15 - a master of all things soulful - leave little to be desired. Our favourite off the EP is the A2. Calm Cacophony kicks off as 16th hihats set a steady pace, rhodes harmonies and touching synth melodies pull at your heartstrings. Through the calm emerges a tight groove, and drums and synthesised arpeggios erupt in an emotional climax. The energy ebbs and swells, building up for a final crescendo, then disappearing as quickly as it came, and leaving you dizzy in it’s wake.

For us, Calm Cacophony ticks all the boxes: beautiful harmony, virtuosic musicianship, high emotion and crisp production. Our only critique would be the name, as there’s sure to be little cacophony to be found anywhere that Nejrup could possibly sway! Nejrup bursts onto the scene with an EP that’s sure to turn some heads, and we definitely can’t wait to hear what else he has in store for us. Manda is out April 27th on Creak Inc. Buy it here.
