[dunkelbunt] merges the diverse sounds of Europes "Wild East" with bluegrass, hillbilly and country from the American pioneers of the old "Wild West". Sounds of the world mixed with electronic, modern club music and bass heavy beats.

Ulf Lindemann aka  [dunkelbunt] was born in Hamburg in 1979. At the beginning of the millennium in his Vienna studio, he began to merge electronic music with Balkan, Gypsy and Swing sounds and along with his contemporaries like Waldeck, Parov Stelar and Shantel helped popularize the new music genres, „Electro Swing“ and „Balkan Beats“. For the last decade he has toured the world with his live act and as a DJ.

The new album  "Mountain Jumper" is an echo of his travels and also a very personal epic journey which along with the music paints various pictures/landscapes. "Electronic music is the foundation which the sounds of the world sit upon. I'm facinated with creating a relationship between sounds that no one has ever heard. There are components from a wide variety of music styles and experiences from my life travels. The natural sounds I recorded while in Hawaii or in Spain together with the musical memories from my time as a Boy Scout traveling in Ireland and Sweden."

The heart of the album is found in the pioneering years of the United States. During [dunkelbunt] 's many tours of
the North American continent he has brought the music of Europes "Wild East" to the USA's "Wild West" and in
doing so became immersed in the magic of country, bluegrass, banjo, slide guitar and fiddle. 

[dunkelbunt]  takes the diverse sounds of various local cultures and mixes them with electro, modern club sounds and bass beats. "I'm inspired by the fact that so many people with different backgrounds all came together on one continent in such a short period of time. It's an amazing musical melting pot, the land of unlimited musical possibilities. I have toyed with the idea of using bluegrass, hillbilly and country styles in my music for years thus giving it a more global and electronic context.“  So in any one song the instruments of a european settler in a covered wagon heading to the west coast can be heard along with the chinese workers of the transcontinental railroad. The pipa and the ehru (the chinese lute and violin) blends with a greek bouzouki, slide guitar and a banjo with oriental strings.

With MORGENLANDFAHRT, [dunkelbunt] combines the many facets and faces of Southeast European music with various stylistic elements of electronic- and world music. The results of these efforts are fusions one may call Balkan-Dub, Balkan-TripHop or simply Balkan-Electronics!

But MORGENLANDFAHRT is more than a mere musical melding of genres. It tells of a bicycle trip from Vienna to Istanbul in 2005, which provided the inspiration for the album. Travelling through 7 countries during his trip, [dunkelbunt] aka Ulf Lindemann got to know not only the lifestyles of locals but also the places where the music originated. The background sounds, which connect the tracks of the CD, were nearly all recorded on his trip with a small stereo microphone. For example: sunrise and birds in the verdant plains by the Danube (Hungary), evening twilight in the meadows of the Danube (Serbia), on the horse and carriage (Romania), children and the sounds of the waves at the beach on the Black Sea (Bulgaria), at the fish market (Istanbul). 

[dunkelbunt] is not only well known for remixing international artists such as Balkan Beat Box, Unified Gecko, Fanfare Ciocarlia, Orient Expressions, Harry Stoijka, Niftys, Eastenders, !Deladap and many more. Within his long-running “Balkan Hot Step” Club Night, [dunkelbunt] has been setting audiences ablaze with his eclectic world music mix and is now considered to be above reproach within the Viennese Balkan scene.

MORGENLANDFAHRT is also a result of Ulf´s move from Hamburg to Vienna in 2001. Initially inspired by the rich electronic music scene in Vienna, he quickly encountered the special Viennese musical diversity ranging from the traditional music from the Balkan to the Orient. This historically grown “Melange” of cultural influences from the near and far eastern neighbours has ever since been a specialty of Vienna which gives it an open-minded and pulsating character. Something you can inhale everyday at Vienna’s famous Naschmarkt with it’s babel-esque mix of languages, foods and goods to buy.

It was this side of Vienna, which let Ulf discover his second passion: he mixes and blends exquisite spices from India, Africa, South America and Europe. Both following old recipes and inventing his own he creates Berbere (Ethiopia), Tandori Masala (India), Cinq-epices (China), bread herbs (Austria), herbal salt and many more.

In a certain way cooking and composing seems to be something very similar to [dunkelbunt]. Basically he simply uses different ingredients: herbs or instruments, sounds or colours, taste, smell, or look. It all comes down to the search for an harmoniuos whole. Nuances will come with the seasoning. Food is both – one fort he body, the other fort he soul. 

Although the musical essence rests upon the South-eastern corners of Europe, sounds from all around this planet are to be enjoyed: from Vienna to the Balkans, through Anatolia and the Middle East, India, North Africa, not to mention South America, to Jamaica and straight to the swinging North American Thirties.

The single “EGAL” is the precursor to the new [dunkelbunt] album “Mountain Jumper” which will be released in spring 2015 on [dunkelbunt records].
With this release [dunkelbunt] & Alix demonstrate their boundless ingenuity, when it comes to making transcontinental music: “EGAL” mixes Hip Hop with Bluegrass, German rap meets New Orleans Marching Brass and the sounds of the Mississippi Delta sail on the Aegean Sea.

On the mic is Alexander Leuschner aka Alix. Born in 1988 and a native of Berlin’s Neukölln suburb, he’s been rapping using various vocal styles from a young age. Rhythmically refined he he bounces on the verses, thoughtfully and humorously talking about life and his visions. Together with [dunkelbunt] he shares his adopted home of Vienna and a passion for merging different musical styles.

Ulf Lindemann aka [dunkelbunt] was born in Hamburg in 1979. While on tour in Hawaii I rented a bike and rode around the island of Maui. My backpack full with two avacados, a few dates, a pocketknife and my bike repair kit. A strong wind on my back and off I went along the unforgettable Hana Highway, an experience etched into my memory. Every 10 minutes I was confronted with different climates, light, and vegetation. Roads strewn with passionfruit turning the surface into a skating rink filled with rainbows, fresh water and salt water. Sleeping under the stars and waking up with a dose of adrenelin instead of my usual caffeine because I had to climb up a tree to get to my coconut milk.
Get Down is my musical interpretation of that trip.

[dunkelbunt] invites us on a musical picnic and serves assorted specialities from around the globe - some of them frisky, some melancholic. The "Picnic with [dunkelbunt]" is colourful, and all those drawers are wide open: Lonely Drifter Karen bewitch with their blend of chanson and mystic folk - french hiphop courtesy of Manau meets Skeewiff's electro blues groove (including a sample from the Coen Bros. movie "Oh Brother Where Are Thou" by the way). Next up: a rare Imam Balidi remix of Bouzouki legend Manolis Hiotis. More where that came from: 

Arthur Lee's almost forgotten soul hit "Everybody's Gotta Live", Oi Va Voi's Klezmer "Ladino Song" featuring the mesmerizing vocals of KT Turnstall. Then, crazy Parisian duo Nôze feat. Dani Siciliano sends an invitation to "Danse Avec Moi"… and when indie rock meets indian pop, it sounds like Firewater's sizzling "This Is My Life". Buenos Aires sends two acts who couldn't be more different: while Axel Krygler's "Princesa" sneaks in on an oriental nu jazz tip, the DJ Delay Dub of Tremor's "Viajante" smartly balances digital and analog grooves.

[dunkelbunt]'s latest single offering "Schlawiener" caters to those who love electro swing, just like Mad Manoush's "Illusionen" does - the latter fueled by Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grapelli inspired gypsy jazz.

No other outfit represents the "new mediterranean sound" like the Watcha Clan does: from their home port Marseille they absorb gnawa from Mahgreb just like they do Balkan brass & turkish arabesque. Their tribute to this picnic is "Goumari" in the infamous DJ Click version - on other occasions they already got remixed by legendary 4Hero!

Baba Zula from Istanbul gained worldwide reputation upon being featured in Fatih Akin's "Crossing The Bridge" documentary - they recorded their picnic contribution "Cecom" during sunset on a boat on the Bosporus river. The vocalist on that track is Brenna MacCrimmon, who worked with a.o. Shantel before. And talking about "Crossing The Bridge": Nil Karaibrahamgil's "Bencil" is a souvenir from [dunkelbunt]'s bicycle tour along the Danube river in 2004, travelling from Vienna to Istanbul.

This „Picnic with [dunkelbunt]“ collection is some sort of Ulf Lindemann’s travel diary, brimming with sounds and souvenirs... brought home from countries & cities where he managed to a.o. get rare cassette tapes from taxi drivers, delete pictures from his camera in order to record a few seconds of mesmerizing music only to play it to smiling retailers in the next big city. And when he's staying in his home harbour Vienna, the man is likely to spend endless nights checking on all those global frequencies together with his friend DJ Sid Data. Those just some of the many ways all those musical pearls found their way into dunkelbunt's picnic basket.

To me, this is a hand selected melange, including wonderful songs and great artists from all over the world, that keeps on touching me in a special way. The track experiments with Far Eastern soundscapes, reggae beats played on Chinese instruments, the erhu and pipa, with vocals coming from the Indian singer Anuradha Genrich. Ever since [dunkelbunt]s headline concert at the BEANTOWN BACKYARD FESTIVAL in Bangalore (October 2018) a facination with India developed that began on the tour itself and continued to inspire on the journey home, with the original concepts for the songs ""Velavan"" and ""Ufos over Bengaluru"" (December 2018).

With her beguiling voice, Anuradha Genrich tells of the poetic deity VELAVAN, the patron of the Tamil language. She studied classical Indian music in Madras and in recent years has collaborated with numerous international musicians (Desert Dwellers, Cheb i Sabbah). Currently she resides in Vienna.

So the journey begins with the Indian Ocean moves over the Chinese Sea and finally lands in the Caribbean.

The "Bass of Asîa" selection is inspired by my latest productions VELAVAN and UFOS OVER BENGALURU using Chinese instruments such aus Pipa, Guzheng and Erhu. A couple of month later I recognized a bunch of similar sounding productions and I started to dig deeper for Electronic Asian Bass Music and created this collection of beautiful music. I am listening to these tunes for a couple of month now and still cant get enough of it... So smooth, wide and deep! And how many stories does they tell? Composed as a part of the project “Transglobal Exodus Complex” - Chapter ASIA FILES, this new track plays with various motives of the “Far East” fantasy and resumes [dunkelbunt]s earlier sampling and turntablism experiments.

The reference to the feature film of the same name and to the topic of atomic bombing was at first rather associative: The theme of yearning for a different, “Oriental” world is reflected in the bitter-sweet violins (erhu), in the percussive plucked strings and in the song line recorded by the singer Lisa Cantabile: "Ne me quitte pas, mon Amour".

Due to the deliberately associative production process and in the context of current DJ mixes such as "Bass of Asia" and "Bass of India", the track "Hiroshima Mon Amour" is a further step within [dunkelbunt]s exploration of the topics "Asia" and "Far East". It includes dark aspects such as civilization collapse and climate change into the musical imagination. Daniel Krammer’s artwork, which was carried out in the [dunkelbunt]-studio, integrates these apocalyptic vibes, but remains - just like the leisurely shuffling track - confident and serene.

Just now Dunkelbunt has come out with  the first ever official remix of Yali, Yali/ Çayelinden Öteye – a Black Sea love song by Turkish arabesk queen Neşe Karaböcek. Deeply groovy mood, veers off from Karaböcek’s trusted arabesk and Türk Sanat territory, entering the twilight zone of Anatolian psyche. Dunkelbunt puts his own dazzling spin to this deeply atmospheric track. He compliments the trilling, lyrical vocal style of Karaböcek with jangly mix of instrumental touches and shimmering sound effects, weaving his own ethereal ambience, punctuated  with swingy sax riffs, while tapering off in the end in spacey electronica.
