This is a song of hope, nothing more nothing less.  Hope.
The song itself really came from nowhere and feel like it formed itself.  I feel it may be one of my strongest songs.  I hope you do too.
It was recorded as a live single take in my kitchen, just like most of my demo recordings.  No fluff, all love, live and raw.  Thank you for listening, please share with a loved one.

Can A Song Save Your Life? an original song

This was a spur of the moment thing.  I'd never played it before, but I've always love the music of Kate Bush and this song is a tune.  I ran through it a couple times and then recorded it live acoustically, lo-fi, at home... warts n all.  I changed it a tiny bit in places to suit me. I don't tend to share many cover versions but thought I'd test the water with this tune.  I hope I haven't destroyed a classic.

In 2012 a good friend, Rob Richards, passed me some beautifully moving lyrics and asked me if I would like to write a song using the words in question.  I wrote something but was never happy with the way I played and sang the demo.  Then 2 years later another good friend, Jennifer-O, heard the demo and said it moved her beyond words and said it needed a return visit and to be shared.  So I send the original rough demo to Rob, at this point he had not even heard the song, asking for his opinion.  He heard it and replied with a few cuss words and told me that it had to be re-recorded, played live and to be shared.
So this week I recorded a single live take, played the song live and have now shared it with you, my friends.  Sometimes things are meant to be delayed, and hidden... and sometimes great friends help you and believe in you and in-doing-so make your voice heard.

The Passage

'The Passage' an original song

This is a difficult song to share; a hand on sleeve kinda thing. It’s written from the perspective of my Mother speaking to, and about, my Father that recently passed away.
A few days after my Father passed away I sat crying, I needed to just play something on the guitar; to help.  Music always heals me in some way.
So through tears and in-between drinking a mug of hot chocolate something came along. I wanted to pay tribute to my Father; I didn’t know where to start.  Inscribed on the mug was a short verse entitled “Cariad - My love it moves through every door, through fields of dreams both rich and poor. It holds no bounds but simply soars towards my Cariad”. So for the purpose of words to melody I sang these; it pushed me to, and through, tears.

I continued to write further verses myself around the melody I held.
My Parents loved each other deeply, truly deeply; the loss of Father from my Mother’s life is heartbreaking. I wrote further words, from my Mother’s POV, these became the rest of the song.  I gave these words to my Mother in hope to give her some comfort, for her to know I love her.
David I have to thank you. You gave me inspiration and comfort.
The basic musical demo was recorded live; single take, the moment of creation. It’s flawed, majorly; there’s no disputing it. But honestly, I don’t think I could recapture the moment.
Usually a basic demo would suffice; I often upload raw live recordings. But I felt I needed to fill the song with my Father and my Mother.
My good friend, Jennifer-O listened to the demo. Jennifer has a haunting voice; a superb, gorgeous tonal quality, it has heart and soul... most importantly soul. I asked if she would sing the chorus vocal, to allow me to double her vox over mine. That was the intention. When I attempted to overlay her vocals I accidently delayed her vocal after my line. Instantly it sounded like a call/response, a beckoning, a comfort, a guiding angelic hand. So accidently I felt it was a gentle kind guide to my Father, spoken from my Mother to Father.
So Jennifer, nobody knows how these things happen, they just happen; it’s like creating moments.  For that I will always thank you.
My Father’s funeral service was over-whelming. He was a well loved and respected man, and this showed at his funeral service. The Church held insufficient order of service books, hymn books and chairs. No fault of their own. There was a mass of people; I saw no faces it was just too moving.  I could not focus on anyone for fear of breaking down and crying; I held my Son tightly almost to gain strength myself.  My Father would have been humbled and touched deeply to see the mass attendance at his funeral.
The dialogue used within this song is (mainly) spoken by James Stewart on acceptance of an AFI Lifetime Honour Award and also from a TV interview recorded for the BBC Michael Parkinson Show.  I don’t own copyright, I don’t intend to exploit the recordings or make any money.  This is not, or will ever be, my intention. 
My Father loved the films of James Stewart; in his voice I hear my Father’s voice.
The other source of dialogue is from the Frank Capra film “It’s A Wonderful Life”; a classic James Stewart film. Clarence the Angel states how one man’s life can touch so many other lives and that when he’s not around it can leave an awful hole...
I will forever miss my Father’s presence in my life, as will my family, my children and so many more of his respected friends.  There is an awful hole.
Being a Father is not easy, and I’m sure I hadn’t made it easy at times for either him or my Mother, but their love and support has always guided me. And for that I am truly thankful.
And to my children and my soul mate Treeza, you allowed me to be a Father myself, for that there are no words to describe my thanks. Creating Moments...

The original version of 'Hurt' by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails can be found on their second studio album, 'The Downward Spiral' (1994), written by Trent Reznor.

In 2002, Johnny Cash covered 'Hurt to commercial and critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hits released before his death, and the related music video is considered one of the greatest of all time by publications such as NME.  Reznor praised Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning", going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore."

'Dry' a Feeder cover version

'Heroes' is a song by English singer-songwriter David Bowie.  It was co-written by Bowie and Brian Eno, produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, and recorded in July and August 1977 at Hansa Studio by the Berlin Wall.  It was released on 23 September 1977 as the lead single from his 12th studio album of the same name.

Trivia:
Bowie's vocal was recorded after most of the session musicians had departed Berlin with a "multi-latch" system devised by Visconti that creatively misused gating.  Three microphones were used to capture the vocal, with one microphone nine inches from Bowie, one 20 feet away and one 50 feet away.  Each microphone was muted as the next one was triggered.  As the music built, Bowie was forced to sing at increased volumes to overcome the gating effect, leading to an increasingly impassioned vocal performance as the song progresses.
Jay Hodgson writes, "Bowie's performance thus grows in intensity precisely as ever more ambience infuses his delivery until, by the final verse, he has to shout just to be heard ... The more Bowie shouts just to be heard, in fact, the further back in the mix Visconti's multi-latch system pushes his vocal tracks, creating a stark metaphor for the situation of Bowie's doomed lovers".

'Airbag' is the first track taken from the third studio album by English rock band Radiohead, entitled "OK Computer".  The album was released on 21 May 1997 on EMI subsidiaries Parlophone and Capitol Records.
