Fasme & Maelstrom  

Episode 130 is finally here and we brought two fascinating French acid heads together for a transcendental journey into the world of transistorised bass: 

Maelstrom, like his name suggests, is a force of disruption. Striving to challenge the sonic and intellectual status quo of dance music, working as a benevolent, anarchic force to upset ineffective systems and sounds.
Co-founder of label RAAR (‘punk for techno-heads / techno for punks’) and prolific in his output on labels ranging from the legendary Clone (under mystery alias) to modern electro-standards such as Private Persons, Mechatronica, CPU and Cultivated Electronics, Maelstrom’s output is as ferocious as it is diverse.
2017 saw the release of the Nantes-based producer’s debut LP, Her Empty Eyes, a dystopic journey through an imaginary piece of historical fiction. Frequent collaborations with RAAR co-founder Louisahhh result in genre-bending chaos, ranging from wall-of-sound techno poems to Atari Teenage Riot-esque aggro-anthems. 2021 finds Maelstrom preparing his latest onslaught of sound; his full- length solo LP Rhizome came out on the 12th of March, it is an entirely fresh body of work about invisible creative communities, sonic evidence of the fact that nothing is created in a vacuum.

Fasme, no other way to describe this man than a live performance phenomenon! His scenic energy has marked the French stages visited in recent years, where his style is constantly evolving between electro, acid, braindance and synth-wave being defined by subtle and melancholic melodies, supported by the unstoppable rhythm of this trained drummer.
Leave no one indifferent; this mantra is what brought this joyful and endearing artist to the attention of the live Electronic Feeling collective, 
then of Astropolis, Paco Tyson & Dehors Brut / Concrete before joining the Sarcus Festival as a resident and more recently the Chevry Agency. His productions are also from another level with recent releases "Hexagonal Club" ( Pont-Neuf Record ) & "Stretched World" ( Nocta Numerica ), with more on the way including releases on Feel My Bicep, Dream Tickets, CPU & Acid Avengers.

These two have made a blend of unreleased tracks and collaborations at the intersection of their respective aesthetics. So let their sonic spectra take over your cerebration and as always…

Dopplereffekt 

As we come to our 150th episode we could not be more proud of how the series is starting to shape and what better way to celebrate this milestone than with the project that has been one of the main driving forces and ideologies we strive for since day one:    

We think Joe Muggs phrased the feeling of first contact in the interview for Resident Advisor rather brilliantly; “Approaching the work of Dopplereffekt can be daunting. As the title of their first album-length collection suggests, the act—it's hard even to know whether to refer to "it," "he" or "they"—comprises a Gesamtkunstwerk: a "total artwork" where every song, every performance, every musical motif and every pronouncement is part of a greater whole.”
 
 This tendency for anonymity and mystery combined with the incorporation of insides on topics such as relativity, time-space continuum, totalitarianism, quantum physics, data (but always with a convivial twist) is what makes this act so intriguing as it always keeps its sound innovative yet timeless while keeping everything styled in Dopplerverse-matter. 

A little bit on the legacy of the concept: it made its debut in 1995 with the Fascist State EP, released by its own Dataphysix Engineering continued by Infophysix in 1996 and Sterilization in 1997 before releasing the iconic Gesamtkunstwerk in 1999.  Deep space excursions began in 2003 with the LP Linear Accelerator and the research was extended with Calabi Yau Space on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex. 
 The most recent spell of experiments saw the alliance with the Berlin based Leisure System come into fruition with 2013's Tetrahymena, the split EP with Objekt named Hypnagogia and the approach of mathematical growth and decay as an iterative process in, with data input considered individually relative to the overall model aka the Cellular Automata LP. 
Some other noteworthy work to let your mind dwell on are Die Riesen together with Visonia on Last Known Trajectory , the Instinct remix of The Exaltics on Solar One Music and the joined EP Star Gazing together with K1.   

This entire discography goes hand in hand with computer free live performances throughout time, with appearances at MUTEK, Oval Space x Different Circles, Tresor, Galactic Funk, inner city electronic, Glitch, Strange Sounds From Beyond, Nuits Sonores, Dimensions Festival, Dekmantel and countless others.

We will conduct an interview with these fascinating beings later this month, but in the meantime be sure to scour Clone Classic Cuts and Aqualung series for Der Zyklus, Japanese Telecom, Zwischenwelt and Arpanet to lead you to endless discovery and entertainment that may or may not have any connection with the previous recording, and as always…

pi pi pi premiere: Opheliaxz - Kookaburra (Self Released)

Produced slowly and meticulously over the last 12
months, these seven tracks are the closet thing we've
had to a new album from Andy Stott since the release
of his debut full-length Merciless five years ago.
Taking influence from an array of seemingly incoherent
noises, from the indefinable and unforgettable mindtricks
of Arthur Russell to the slowhouse of Kassem
Mosse, from the alternate VHS realities of James
Ferraro and Jamal Moss to the Linn Drum classics of the
vintage Prince era - these seven tracks create their own
pace and agenda, largely shying away from the
dancefloor in favour of something more complex and
hard to define.
Following on from the tribal malfunctions of opening
intro Signature, New Ground heads into a chasm of
layered loops, creating a decimated and re-wired funk
template coloured in with frayed percussion and
dislodged vocal samples. North To South starts off from
similar ground but adds a shuffling vibe at a deceptively
intoxicated 110 bpm.
Intermittent is something altogether different, taking
perfectly formed Boogie templates and screwing with
them until nothing quite fits, brittle elements floating in
and out of time yet somehow keeping it together,
before Dark Details delivers the most dancefloor
compatible six minute stretch of the set, all clanging
stabs and dense percussion, somewhere between
Shackleton and Bam Bam.
Execution and Passed Me By end things off on a slowed
down tip, the former deploying an anaesthetised and
padded 4/4 template sunk deeper into the abyss by
deformed, time-stretched vocals, the latter ending off
proceedings with a more delicate palette, letting go of
all that pent-up emotion with nothing but that rumbling
low-end and some strings for company.

Until he launched his own Radio Matrix label with a clever and conceptual series of EPs in 2014, Delta Funktionen was exclusively tied to Dutch stable Delsin and its sub labels. It is there that he has roamed from techno to electro to dub, and there that he has put out a string of EPs and coherent full length over the last decade. Unlike many of his underground peers, Delta isn’t too serious and likes to have fun when DJing, so can go hard and fast or deep and warm according to the context. He often marries analogue and digital techniques in his work, takes cues from traditional hotbeds like Detroit and Chicago, but always comes correct with his own unique perspectives.  

Across the course of 75 absorbingly sci-fi minutes, the Dutchman cooks up a cinematic ride through deep space atmospherics, electronic funk and slick electro. The latter half grows more disturbed and dystopian, but there is always a very real and metallic aesthetic to the seamlessly segued sounds that ties the whole thing together with real narrative.
