A fine take on a Waits tune, Friend. Even hear a bit of Harry Chapin feel here. It's that kinda' tune, but with your own special sauce for sure. Most enjoyed.

I had forgotten how touching a song this is.  Will put your version on a loop and spend some time with it  today.

Like so many others out there, I'm a huge fan of Tom Waits for his songwriting and performances. And this song is one of his earlier beauties, simple and direct. Such a story teller, a scene painter and the master of the story within the story, the acceptance and resignation. The lover of pretty things in a shadowy world. I recorded this quick and dirty on my iPhone, no mic, just the basic song...because I love singling it.

He won his first Grammy in 1991 and at age 70 he was named Artist of the Year by the Americana Music Association.  His songs have been recorded by the likes of Johnny Cash, Bettte Midler, Bonnie Raitt, George Strait and many others.  His new album , The Tree of Forgiveness is receiving so much acclaim. Another live interpretation of an old classic love song, this one was originally written by Jimmy Duncan and first recorded by the Sonny Land Trio back in 1957. But this caught most of our attention from the Bobby Helms recording later that same year. I’ve also been a big fan of the version released in 1968 by The Vogues. This started as a live recording that Nat once again brought to full life with her beautiful accompanying vocals and instrumental nuances.
