Durkle Disco: Definitions Volume 3 - The Remixes [DURKLP007]

If you’ve ever checked out the Durkle radio show, then you’ll know we’re big fans of Amapiano, the South African sound currently taking over worldwide dancefloors, and its gradual cross-pollination with more traditionally UK club sounds. So we’re excited to be welcoming CURTISSS (formerly known as Distro, and one half of the Free Movement duo) to the label for his first full solo Durkle release, hot on the heels of his flip of Free Movement’s ‘Over The Wall’ this summer.

On the smooth & sometimes sensual title track ‘All For You’ he links up with long-time Durkle family member NGAIO – the Bristolian polymath (singer, DJ, promoter, and activist are just some of the many strings to her bow) who should need no introduction to followers of the label. A hugely versatile vocalist, NGAIO flexes her full vocal range on this, effortlessly switching through gears and mixing some huskier tones with impactful high notes.

Whilst drawing strong influences from, and paying respect to, the Amapiano formula, CURTISSS also doesn’t shy away from his UK Funky/Bass background (having notched releases under his previous alias on esteemed labels such as RKS, 877 & Punks Music) – especially on the hard hitting ‘Ancestors’. Both tracks here come in at a slightly higher BPM than typical South African production – fusing some of the best of what the 2 scenes have to offer sonically. All 3 tracks on this EP have been tried and tested all summer – getting a resounding seal of approval from festival and club crowds, as well as radio listeners.

Durkle Disco return with their first release of 2022, presenting a cross-country link up between London producer/DJ J-Fresh and Hull MC Chiedu Oraka aka The Black Yorkshireman; the duo combine on ‘Energy Never Dies’ to bring the heat to the Bristol-based imprint. 

With a pedigree stretching back to grime’s pirate radio era, and regular guest appearances on both BBC Radio 1Xtra & Kiss FM, J-Fresh has also been steadily building his production arsenal. The past year in particular has seen him bless us with explosive collaborations with vocalists ranging from grime legends such as Clipson, Brakeman and Ears, to rising talents like Skatta, Griz-O, Cassie Rytz & Flamezee. 

Chiedu Oraka is coming off a similarly strong few years – releases such as the ‘Ave Life EP’, ‘Darcy’, and most recently ‘Maggie To Sip’ have seen him regularly feature in Spotify’s ‘Grime Shutdown’ playlist and gain support from radio luminaries such as Charlie Sloth. Durkle has long been a natural home for those representing their regional accents, and the Black Yorkshireman fits naturally into this lineage with his unabashed East Yorkshire twang and slang. A formidable lyricist, equally comfortable on grime or rap, on ‘Energy Never Dies’ he takes a slightly more minimal approach, providing two catchy hooks which repeat throughout, perfectly complimenting J-Fresh’s high energy production which fuses the bass-heavy dancefloor focus of late era UK Garage with strong influences of the Eski strand of Grime which directly followed in the early 00s.

Despite the 200 miles distance between J-Fresh & Chiedu Oraka, this was no chance online link up – the 2 have have a musical relationship dating back to Chiedu guesting on a radio show with J back in 2019; ‘Energy Never Dies’ is a collaboration long in the making. Radio is also the link between J-Fresh and Durkle Disco, as he originally linked up with label boss Koast via Durkle stalwart Slowie when filming some MC sessions in Bristol pre-lockdown. A label that prides itself on its diverse approach to UK bass music with a proud track record of pushing MC-led bangers, Durkle seems a natural fit for ‘Energy Never Dies’ – a tune that seems set to live up to its name as the days start getting longer and minds turn to summer fun.

Russian dubstep don Oddkut, who should be no stranger to 140 aficionados thanks to previous releases on the likes of Wheel & Deal, Artikal Music & DUPLOC, puts an ice cold spin on Nothingnice & Hayz's 2021 banger 'Hawkeye', with the London City Warlord himself Riko Dan returning on vocals. Where the original was all eerie tension, utilising space to a devastating effect, Oddkut's flip is straight up menace & threat, taking the temperature into sub-zero territory - but with more than enough weight to rattle the most serious systems.

Liverpudlian producer Lucent joins forces with legendary Bristolian MC Buggsy for a blistering debut on Durkle Disco.

With past releases for Trouble & Bass, Tumble Audio, 877 and Hot Cakes, Lucent has already turned plenty of heads in both the UK Funky and wider Bass Music worlds.

This inaugural effort for Durkle Disco continues that theme, drawing elements from both sounds with hard carnival-ready drums, lazer-cut bleeps, floor-shaking bass and a touch of early-rave nostalgia courtesy of a signature vocal sample from The Ratpack’s MC Everson Allen.

As is standard for a Durkle Disco release, an MC vocal takes centre stage - and Lucent goes high, drafting in legendary Bristol MC and fellow Durkle debutant, Buggsy.

From tearing up the seminal Sidewinder raves as a teen, to working with the cream of his hometown’s world-renowned electronic music scenes and, most recently, contributing a version of Jammz & Jack Dat’s notorious ‘French Montana Riddim’; Buggsy is a true grime original. His trademark rapid-fire flow lights up Lucent’s instrumental, breaking down the origins of the Bristol grime scene he helped birth.

An already powerful combination is rounded off with a monster remix from UKG royalty Zed Bias, returning to Durkle for the first time since his 2014 remix of Lamont’s ‘Far Away’. His swinging 2-step flip takes ‘Originate’ to a deeper, darker place, with an outrageous rumbling baseline ensuring none of the raucous energy of the original is lost.

Durkle Disco is a Bristol-based record label with bass at its very core. First conceived in 2011 as a place where grime, garage, hip-hop and dubstep could combine and intertwine - with just as much attention paid to the MCs as the producers - the label has since evolved to become a natural home for the new strains of instrumental bass-driven music coming from Bristol’s next unstoppable wave of production talent.

Lamont, OH91, Otik, Lemzly Dale, Daffy & Gundam are just some of the producers to have released with the label in the past. As a mark of the respect Durkle holds within the music world, the label’s tracks have undergone the remix treatment from some of bass-driven music’s biggest names. Zed Bias, Kahn, Starkey, Hi5Ghost & Caski have all given some of the imprint’s finest moments their own individual twist.

With recent releases from Mani Festo, Unkey, Young H, Vern & Milla, and Denham Audio, the only Disco worth doing your thing at this year is the Durkle one…
