Boo Su is a fictional cog as part of a system that lives in a futuristic subterranean world of stuttered magnetic rhythms coalescing in a tapestry of harsh brutal noise and architecture. It is where dark cold machines conjure up resistance to bass and unwanted sounds. The DIY glitch compass faces towards a place where aesthetics and operations of failure are embraced - North.

Dushume Mute Synth II Remix

Kobi Mutter is a composition, which is playful yet quirky in nature seeking textures from machine and mechanical sounds. There is a rich marriage of glitch, noise and bass music with direct inspiration from dubstep, techno and IDM. The work itself derives from an improvisational process using only source material from the Faraday Dirty Kinetic Synth (a DIY sound device).

Crapbox

Regurgitated, repossessed and re-housed – a discarded instrument lay dormant for nine years, its innards incarcerated and stripped from its skin. The circuit, in the former guise of the ‘Sudofuzz’, is a collection of feedback networks, oscillators and distortion. It was specifically designed for a collaboration between Masami Akita (Merzbow) and the Dirty Electronics Ensemble in 2008. Innards exposed, it has been rehoused in a trinket box bought cheap from a Loros charity shop and aptly with my cancerous zodiac sign firmly in tow. The title for the work, ‘Crapbox’, is a play on the words ‘crab box’.

The Dirty Electronics Pop-up I in Haymarket Shopping Centre (6,7,8th Nov 19), Leicester has allowed me as a DIY Nomad to set up a temporary 'pop-up' workbench and a portable sound studio in situ. This has enabled me to expediently and simultaneously build, make, devise, and record the Radical Nails sound(-making) object. Here is an excerpt... fully improvised and no post-production editing.

Radical Nails Pop-up 2

Watana explores hidden depths of a variety of deep experimental sound. The studio work has been composed using the Radical Nails sound(-making) object. The Radical Nails is a Hardware Mash-up and a Speculative Sound Circuit that mashes-up the Dirty Electronics’ Bed of Nails and the Simple & Radical.
 
The instrument was devised on the Studio Bench: a holistic practice where what could be considered as three separate activities - electronic instrument building, studio recording and live electronics - come together and these cultures bind and collide as part of an ongoing method of ‘making’. Here the barriers are broken down between the distinctive spaces such as a workshop, recording studio and live performance venue and they co-exist. The Studio Bench also encompasses music-making approaches found in DIY electronics, noise music, DJing and record selecting.
 
In relation to Watana, the Radical Nails has been further explored by improvisation in the sound studio resulting in recordings that are intertwined mashed-up and re-edited. Deep bass/ low-pitched material derives at the forefront of the piece alongside high-hisses coalescing into a tapestry of experimental harsh noise.

The Dirty Electronics Sonar 20th Anniversary Synth is an ultra minimal pocket-sized synth, black finished with silver-plated etched Sonar logo. The synth has a 20-step sequencer to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Sonar (one step for each year). The instrument comes with pre-written sequenced patterns that can be either listened to in their own right or played. Bit bashing meets analogue noise and crumpled grooves. Dushume (aka Amit D Patel) remixes and edits of sounds from the Sonar 20th Anniversary Synth.

Dirty Electronics Sonar 20th Anniversary Synth, Dushume Mix, 2013

Amit D Patel, aka Dushume, is an experimental noise and sound artist, influenced by Asian underground music and DJ culture. His work focuses on performing and improvising with purpose built do-it-yourself instruments, and recording these instruments incorporating looping, re-mixing and re-editing techniques. Lack and loss of control are central to his work. He has a PhD in Music, “Studio Bench: the DIY nomad and Noise Selector” (2019), from the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK.
