TPS 053 - KARIŞIK LOKUM KUTUSU - Turkish record Selections by WoMu Vin

"Karışık Lokum Kutusu" translates to "A box of assorted Turkish delights", which I thought would be a fitting name to describe the variety of tracks in this all-vinyl mix recorded from OG Turkish records from the 70s and 80s, with a variety of styles including (but not limited to) modern takes on Anatolian folk, funk-infused pop and Arabesque. The mix features several artists including Arif Sağ, Zafer Dilek, Yıldıray Çınar and Hakkı Bulut, all of whom were highly influential in reinterpreting and modernising the music they performed and produced for other artists.

I am dedicating this mix to the dearly missed Mads Nimann Jensen (Instagram @madsnimann) whom we lost a year ago to the day (October 13th) as a result of terminal cancer. In losing Mads we lost a legendary collector, but more importantly, a legendary human being (anyone who has ever been in contact with him will know exactly what I mean by that).

Window In is Michael Vallera’s third full length offering on the Denovali label, following  All Perfect Days (2018) and Vivid Flu (2017).  

The four tracks that compose Window In are an exercise in density, movement, and space. Raw studio recordings of electric guitar were taken as the foundation, then heavily altered and manipulated through sampling, erasing the trace back to origin of the sound. The result is a series of vignettes that are unattached to a particular source but instead exist in an emotive and internal state.

<em><a href="http://www.dust-digital.com/greek/">Greek Rhapsody &#8212; Instrumental Music from Greece 1905-1956</a></em> (out on June 11, 2013) is a two-CD collection featuring 42 tracks meticuolously remastered from 78rpm recordings of Greek instrumentals. Many tracks are rare and never previously reissued on CD or vinyl; some are taken from the only known copies, while previously reissued tracks are here offered in far superior sound quality. This compilation offers, for the first time, a unique panorama of the instruments and styles of the Greek music of the period.

The two CDs were compiled and the 152-page book was written by Tony Klein - a British musician, researcher, and writer, based in Sweden. He has played and researched Greek music for 40 years, and studied with, among others, the veteran Stelios Keromitis.
