On the B-side, 6 remixes deepen the sonic palette of the dreamy landscapes showcased on the other side. Alon.e dwelves into trancy synths and an IDM/trip-hopish groove for his version of Super Yellow Juice. Le Frit reconstructs Nunca Esperei por Ti. into a low-key, delicate and psychedelic dembow track. H2O gives a new life to Bamboo Flute with a playful version halfways between dub and synthwave. Guillerrrmo, straight from Manaus, member of São Paulo’s Mamba Negra, distorts the same track into a slow and powerful breakbeat heater. Manchester’s Obeka delivers a mesmerizing dancehall remix of Bury me, with Love, inspired by the track’s heady synths. Last but not least, Ditti re-harmonizes Escadarias into a colorful and quirky reinterpretation.

Tembang Sunda, which features sung poetry accompanied by kecapi (zither) instruments and suling (bamboo flute), is a classical vocal style originating from the Sunda kingdom of highland West Java. Developed in the court of the regent Kebupaten Cianjur in the late 19th century, the tembang Sunda is one of the most serene of Indonesian ensembles. The style began as an entertainment in which aristocrats would sing in poetic meters derived from West Javanese or Central Javanese vocal forms. A variant, kecapi suling, which arose in the 1970s and omits the vocals, is performed in restaurants and hotels in many parts of Indonesia due to its soft and mellifluous sound.

There are normally two kecapi: the lower-pitched kecapi indung and the higher-pitched and kecapi rincik or anak. Functioning respectively as mother (slower, outlining bridges and interludes) and child (faster, filling in parts), the indung has 18–20 strings and the rincik (which often plays at twice the density of the indung) normally has 15 strings. One to eight vocalists might participate in performances of tembang Sunda. Musicians traditionally hold performances in the evenings and are not paid for their services. Pieces begin with free meter and heavily ornamented songs (mamaos), followed by fixed-meter songs (panambih).

This piece, like most, features a vocalist singing poetry (tembang) in the Sundanese language. The tuning is pelog. The male vocalist sings in meter (panambih), and the kecapi players follow the vocal melody. The suling player, who opens the piece, intersperses melodies in between verses of poetry, thus never overlapping with the vocalist. Tembang Sunda serves as a sonic link to the past for aristocrats.

Çaykh presents: Carpet Contextualization #2

Originally aired on Netil Radio via Dragoș Munteanu's JAS show which exclusively premiered the first two tracks of forthcoming Carpet Album’s B-Side,  this is the second installment of Spiritczualic Enhancement Center's Carpet Contextualization series. 

Curated by the outernational spectral-jazz ensemble’s drummer & producer Çaykh, the series presents a collection of influences and inspirations for the LP which he mixed throughout the lockdowns while travelling the Mediterranean coast from Cote d’Azur to Albania.

Carpet Album is landing on 29.10.2021.

“Carpet Inauguration” and “This One is On You, Adrian” were recorded during Spiritczualic’s stay at Outernational Days festival in Bucharest, back in 2018. Like the other tracks on the vinyl, they were remotely overdubbed by locked-down members of the project - dispersed over several countries.

IMPREC Podcast Number 2

Frozen in time over four decades this 1984 “cyclic incantation” combines electroacoustics, grazed euphoria, industrial aesthetics, sampled salvage and recycled mechanic folk to score a widely revered dystopian physical theatre performance from the UK’s hugely influential Impact Theatre Co-Operative. From a seminal post-punk art-action faction (formed in a Leeds warehouse space alongside Gang Of Four and The Mekons), this apocalyptic prophecy not only cracked avant-garde stage boundaries but provided a captive audience with stunning set design and an incredible broken-music soundtrack before its swan song amidst Poland’s 1986 power plant panic. From the sonic workbench of the very same bedsit-Situationists that created the haunting 1983 music to The Moomins TV animation comes the eventual isolated music release to this pioneering theatrical spectacle of truly mythical status.

The Carrier Frequency (1984) was a legendary stage work that emerged from the collaboration between the influential performance company Impact Theatre Co-Operative and cult novelist Russel Hoban. The incantation of Hoban’s text voiced in the broken verbiage of a post-apocalyptic broken language and the entranced physicality of Impact’s ritualistic performance in a pool of cold dark water printed deeply on those who witnessed it. It reached an impassioned crescendo on the rising score by Graeme Miller and Steve Shill who also performed in the work. The music exploited samples from Hoban’s own recordings of the shortwave radio broadcasts which he tuned in as he wrote, helping him order the green phosphorescent letters on the screen of his Apple computer. Shill and Miller mirrored Hoban’s channelling in their approach to making the score, following the notion that this was the broadcast of some Central Eurasian radio station doomed forever to circulate fragments of static interlaced with desultory public information broadcasts and “The Record”, its only surviving fragment of a lost culture. The score was forged on an 8-track tape recorder sandwiching harmonium and accordion with the output of a digital delay machine that could trap and fragments of audio to be triggered and manually pitched. It is a knowingly crude montage where samples denote fragmentation itself and their reassembly, like Frankenstein’s monster, shows the stitches that join the stolen body parts.

The entire unreleased soundtrack for Jean Rollins 1971 ultimate French vampire hippy flick Le Frisson Des Vampires. Embryonic psych funk recordings from Parisian teenage psych combo (including members of French No-No mod rockers Unity.

Imagine an early Gong/Ame Son/Soft Machine session fuelled by a 1000 year old acid infused blood transfusion.

With origins in the Parisian underground, the Free Press revolution, New Wave cinema, The Letterist movement, French Surrealism, sexual liberation and the European progressive rock explosion Jean Rollin’s 1972 film ‘Le Frisson De Vampires’ still stands up as one of the most original European poetic erotic horror films after almost 40 since it’s cosmic inauguration. This summer Finders Keepers Records finally release the complete freak-rock soundtrack to the most phantasmagoric celluloid moment from “The First French Vampire Director” which has been shrouded in mystery, secrecy and red wine addled memories for four decades.

Originally rumoured to be played by a disbanded group of teenagers and lost in the edit suite the unabridged soundtrack of improvised freak-funk, commune rock and acidik folk could have easily been recorded by an early line-up of Gong or Ame Son and released on a label like BYG or ESP. The true origins of this rare psychedelic score and it’s unspoken legacy via private pressed free jazz albums and collectible mod rock 45s adds to the twisted tails that unfolds via our extensive liner notes making this release yet another counter-cultural pop milestone courtesy of Finders Keepers Records.

Made on a shoestring in rural Northern France with a cast and crew that draws a blood red line between the avant-garde and The pre-cert video cassette the behind the scenes story of Les Frisson De Vampires engulfs a rampant river of cultural phenomenon such as Japanese Pinky films, X-rated comic books, The Mai 68 riots and the forward thinking No-No generation. Complete with classic and highly collectible artwork by French illustrator Phillipe Druliet and music that will appeal to fans of J.P.Massiera, Amon Duul 1, Jean-Claude Vannier, Igor Whakevitch, Fifty Foot Hose, early Pink Floyd and Acid Mothers Temple.

Originally released in 2010 as the inaugeral release in our dedicated Rollinade series, documenting some of the finest musical moments of the director’s career as an avant-gardener, counter-culture vulture and Gallic vamp-tramp, Finders Keepers once again presents the entire unreleased soundtrack from the ultimate French vampire hippy flick Le Frisson Des Vampires on vinyl.
