For this year’s Black History Month I thought I would eschew the expected, and go 180 to the roots of today’s club culture….Northern Soul…..A strange early 70’s UK phenomenon that saw people from all over the UK travel hundreds of miles to dance to obscure 60s Soul from midnight till eight on a Sunday.  Now this was the time of Bowie, Roxy Music, T-Rex…..Yet hundreds….Nay thousands of kids…Would trek to The Torch in Stoke on Trent……Catacombs in Wolverhampton…. Manchester's Twisted Wheel….. the Blackpool Mecca….and most famously….. the Wigan Casino…armed with nothing more than a holdall filled with a change of clothes, talcum powder to sprinkle on the floor, and a clutch of blues to power through a night of shuffles, backflips, kicks and spins. No booze…Just a love of music and a drug that aided in the participation of it. Sound familiar? This is my homage to that bygone era….No mixing….Record ends….Record starts….Just me trying to keep the faith!

Diggin In The Crates CJSW 90.9 FM/cjsw.com - Black History Show 2024 - Northern Soul

This is the very last episode of my show on my local college radio station....CJSW 90.9FM....I've been doing this show..in and out...for 5 decades...And over the years it moved through Tuesday Sunday and Thursday before being moved to Friday evening in 1993 to helm a night of groove that started at 6pm and ended well into the early hours of Saturday. That Friday became the envy of many a station in North America and still continues to this day. I lasted just short of 20 years, when I left for a long weekend and returned in 2017 to do a drive home show on Monday from 4 to 6. Unlike the Friday show, this particular incarnation of the Musiquarium was flawed....mainly because of the 35% Canadian Content regulations...it just sounded like two different shows. So feeling that I could take it no further...and with commitments that far outweighed the show...I thought I would end it at the end of March 2020 with a show that was what I really envisioned the Musiquarium to be all along....just an eclectic mash of sounds and styles that stimulate and confound in equal measure. Thanks to all for all the love over the years.
