Full-time artist, fashion designer and musician Ican Harem is the MC and hype man of Gabber Modus Operandi, an accidental project founded by Ican and producer Kasimyn, and born out of a shared obsession for all sorts of high-octane, fast-paced sounds. A product of their surroundings, the Bali-based duo’s hard, dark, abrasive club sounds owe a lot to both the heavy metal obsession that reigns supreme in their homeland of Indonesia and gamelan percussion-based, traditional ritualistic music that plays a similarly integral part in the country’s culture; 12th century black magic rituals performed by witches, Balinese and Javanese trance-dance hypnotic rhythms pushing their participants into altered consciousness, and Indonesian music that speaks to Gods, nature and the other worlds. Leaning towards happy hardcore, Gabber Modus Operandi attempt to bridge the gaps between humor, dark contemporary music, and Indonesian tradition, straddling the line between the sacred and the banal. For this show, Ican Harem presents us with a glimpse of an extensive range of influences in exuberant digital sarcasm, where ancient meets the WIFI, past meets the future, and technology becomes an accessory.

Cairo-based singer and producer Nadah El Shazly, known for her fresh and fearless performances, is a prominent and captivating voice - both as singer and songwriter in the burgeoning underground music scene of Egypt and North Africa. Having started out in a Cairo punk band singing covers by the Misfits, Nadah gradually moved into homemade electronic music before alighting on the mystical hybrid between rock, avant-garde music and electronica that forms the core of her critically acclaimed and otherworldly debut album, Ahwar, a perfect amalgamation of traditional Egyptian song with experimental takes on performance and instrumentation. Nadah’s set for this show, heavy with emotion, resembles an intense navigation through a dystopian city falling apart in an atmosphere romantically yellowed with desperation.
