After their debut set together at Glastonbury 2019, Dutchie and Dr Syntax have struck up an exciting creative relationship and this is the first of their official collaborations. ‘This Year’ takes the listener on a visceral journey through grime-esque horns, bashy drums, heavy bass, breaks and relentless high energy. Dutchie’s aggressive production paired with Dr Syntax’s reflective yet motivational lyrics and Summer’s dulcet chorus vocals combine into what can only be described as a playful call to arms to make the music, do the thing, stay productive and grab the oncoming year by the proverbial horns.

“This is really a special record for Astrophonica. It could be argued that Jim Coles aka Om Unit’s Philip D Kick alias spawned an entire movement which dictated the sound of future. The three Philip D Kick ‘Footwork Jungle’ EPs released in 2011 saw Jim take classic Jungle anthems and footwork them. At the time, this was mind-blowing, I’d never heard anything like it. Even though I had been checking for Footwork and of course, have a history and love for Jungle. These edits spawned a generation of younger producers and revitalised older producers like myself. It also bought Jim and I together as friends and later on collaborators. So it is with great pleasure and genuine excitement that I present to you Philip D Kick’s first original material – Pathways.” 

And now over to the man himself for a few words… Philip D Kick, Jim, Om Unit… 

"I decided once I was done with my Om Unit ‘Self' project that I wanted to have some real fun with breaks again, and something drew me back to working at 160bpm, I wanted to make some more fun light-hearted stuff, and so I felt like returning to the Philip project would be a nice way of not only re-visiting something that was such a vibe back in the day but also now that all the fuss around so called 'jungle footwork' as a 'thing' has died down." 

Pathways opens with ‘In Formation’ which sets off with familiar breaks before descending into uncharted Acid Footwork Jungle territory. ‘Work That’ traces the 4/4 UK hardcore lineage to plot a new course for the dance floor. ’Drown’ draws energy from drum-funk to discover an ethereal breakdown that leads to a sound killing Amen finale. Two worlds collide on the same course in ’Vibe Off’ with Chicago based Footwork pioneer DJ Spinn claiming he’s vibing off the beat and honestly, who can blame him? ’For Real’ is a fitting ending to Pathways. A lights out and headphones on journey from moody drum machine rhythms to euphoric synth lines. 

Pathways is released 1st June 2018 on Limited Edition 12” & Digital with Limited Edition A3 Risograph prints, and Limited Edition T-shirts with DTG oversize prints on US-Import Tees. As always big shout Utile Creative (and Philip D Kick’s Reebok Classics) for the artwork.

The ‘Heartless Badboys’ saga continues; it’s the second volume of the Ep that follows in footsteps of the first one, with four tracks that cover a full spectrum of sounds and bpms ranging from dubstep to jungle, all 100% Numa Crew certified ammo.
The Ep starts off with a 140 dubstep track by Lapo; a melting pot of futuristic synth sounds and spacey atmospheres driven by dub drums, make ‘Automatic Soul’ the perfect track to start walking down the streets of Heartless Badboys.  
What follows is a mood change in track number two: Leon P & Ago bring dubstep back to the rave jungle era. ‘Juju’ is a mix of hardcore rave synths, hypnotic sounds and heavy breaks. Irie!  
T-Kay’s ‘Monarch’ changes up the tempo and guides us into the world of drum’n’bass with minimalist rolling drums, a punching snare and a ‘radar’ bass that spreads out like an alarm siren.  
Lurking in the darkest corners of the streets, XL Mad’s ’Death Valley’ suddenly jumps out to close the Ep, slowing down the tempo to a 128 bpm blend of ukg and afro riddim, raw grind bass combined with old skool jungle samples.
