What Edward Said, the first installment in the Dutty Artz 6 Years Deep anniversary mix series, connects the dots between Middle Eastern, African, and Asian cultures, concepts much written about by the late scholar Edward Sa’id. Mixed by Ushka and Brooklyn Shanti, it begins with Thai sarama music, weaves in Bollywood and bhangra then migrates west to Palestinian hip hop and Egypt’s underground youth electro-shaabi and mahraganat scene. Ushka, a deejay of Sri Lankan origin raised in Thailand, alongside Brooklyn Shanti, a Bengali-American music producer, pulled from the soundscapes of their own backgrounds to formulate a mix which creates context around the apex of their playlist - the original production and adaptation of “Hanuma Vanama” (recital of the monkey). The result is a Lankan and Bengali fusion take on folkloric dance music.

Ushka x Brooklyn Shanti - What Edward Said Mixtape

The cover for the Caribbean edition of the 6 Years Deep series is a painting by Aaron Douglas, the same artist that did the cover for Paul Gilroy's The Black Atlantic. This is a term that Gilroy used to describe the networks of travel, communication & trade between former slave colonies and the UK, Canada, the US and Europe. It’s also the incubator of DJ culture: breaking apart / remaking music means cultural survival and healing for people on the wrong side of global systems of power.

In the second mix in Dutty Artz’ anniversary mix series Robzilla and Ripley are messengers with communications too real for (un)Clear Channel: sonic threads from the cultural fabric centering Black Atlantic pleasures and politics. Brooklyn beats and Jamaican-British bass jostle up on trapped out dancehall bounce, Dominican dembow breaks through Dutch moombahton remixes of dancehall, while St Vincent, Barbadian and Jamaican vocalists demonstrate that the dealings of the system are dirtier than any sexual position.

*Sunset Park Rent Strike*

For years, residents of three adjacent buildings on 46th street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, have been living in nightmarish living conditions. Despite numerous complaints made to city agencies and politicians’ offices, documented housing violations include unsafe electrical wiring, a broken boiler, and disease-triggering agents that continue to threaten the lives of dozens of residents. The rent strike has inspired a movement of activists and artists to come together with the tenants in order to improve the conditions in the buildings. This musical collaboration includes the voices and stories of the rent strikers themselves sharing their courage and their struggle against injustice.
