Edge of the Wood

Emile Facey lives in Penge, South East London. ‘When writing this music I became very interested in the history of the area I live in, imagining what it had been like when the ancient Great North Wood was still standing and the now busy urban area was a tiny hamlet sitting at the edge of a vast forest. I read that Penge was first recorded under the name Penceat in an Anglo-Saxon deed dating from 957 and that many historians believe the name of the town is derived from the Celtic word Penceat, which means "edge of wood". The Porcupine Meadow and a toll gate were important landmarks in the area.’

First inspired by Kraftwerk and the Street Sounds hip-hop compilations in the early 1980s Emile was hooked on electro from an early age. In 1998 he started promoting electro events in London and connecting with other producers and DJs from the UK and abroad. This led to him building his first bedroom studio and, after a few years of learning, honing and recording, Emile’s Plant43 project saw it’s first vinyl release in 2006 on the much-missed Ai Records. Since then he’s released nearly 100 tracks on many highly respected labels including Frustrated Funk, CPU, Semantica, Shipwrec, AC Records, Bleep43 Recordings, Cultivated Electronics and Trust.

He is also a graphic designer, illustrator and co-founder of bleep43.com, which is dedicated to celebrating electronic music. Since 2002, Emile has played live alongside DJ Stingray, ERP/Convextion, Surgeon, DJ Overdose, Urban Tribe and many others.

Eudemonia

‘Edge of the Wood’ is the first release on new label Eudemonia. Emile explains, ‘In early 2017 label owner Sascha reached out to tell me about his dream, starting a record label which allowed the artists the freedom to express themselves musically and visually but also to give something back to society, with a proportion of profits going to Musicians Without Borders, an organisation using music to connect communities in war torn countries. I have really enjoyed collaborating with him over the last year and we have created an EP which features tracks and imagery which I hope meet our objectives. I have poured all of my emotion and energy into this project and am very proud to be the first artist to be released on Eudemonia.’

Andy (Bass Agenda) explains: “After over 100 releases I was planning on taking a break from the label from March but as this Coronavirus pandemic became more and more serious, I really felt like doing something tangible to help.  Like many people I am out of work thanks to this crisis and I wanted to do something meaningful and creative with my time. I was getting the same kind of messages from artists both on the label and in the wider Electro/Techno community.  Having done large charity release projects before I knew this could be done.”

He continues, “I posted on Facebook and approached a few contacts saying I was thinking of doing it and to get in touch if they wanted to get involved.  A week later I had over 70 artists up for the challenge. It is a beautiful thing to see so many talented people getting involved, from newcomers to established leaders in the scene like Carl Finlow, John Selway, Detroit’s Filthiest, Dez Williams, and Radioactive Man.”

“As for where the money from the release will go, I chose NHS Charities Together because they represent over 100 NHS charities and will distribute donations amongst them and also have a specific Covid-19 campaign running.  Médecins Sans Frontières are the other organisation that will receive profits from the release. I wanted to include one that worked beyond the UK to reflect the international nature of the crisis and the fact that the Electro and Techno communities are global too.”

Less than one year after his 2019 release entitled ‘Trans Asia Express’, DVS NME returns with a collection of original tracks that were produced between 2018-2020. This 30-track album is a not-so-subtle nod to the Electro inspirations that have helped to influence the DVS NME sound that has developed over the course of the last 20 years. The most obvious influence is that of Detroit pioneers Drexciya and subsequent projects by Gerald Donald. The album pays homage to Dopplereffekt’s 1999 album ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ in both its title and cover art. The release ranges from brooding, downtempo machine funk all the way to dancefloor-oriented melodic Electro. The album relies heavily on the sounds of classic Electro machines like Mono/Poly, MS-20, SH-101, Jupiter-8, Juno-106, JX-3P, TB-303, Polysix, TR-606, OB-8, TR-808, ARP Odyssey, and TR-909. DVS NME is the man behind the weekly radio show/daily blog called 'Dark Science Electro' and has been a dedicated contributor for the Electro community for the last 10 years. He shares his love of Electro music by posting Electro-affiliated news, art, mixes, albums, memes, concerts, tracks, gear and more. A real music freak, who has mixed her fave electro, IDM and techno tracks since 2005. She is the former co-editor of Selection Sorted TechnoPodcast, has been a guest in many-many radioshows and podcasts, she has played in many clubs and festivals of Hungary(Kontra, wndrlnd, Corvinteto, Müszi, Kuplung, R33, Egál,S.U.N festival,Ozora ect...) and also abroad, like Slovakia,Austria,Romania and France.
