Exactly one year after his 2020 release entitled Dunklewissenschaft, DVS NME returns with a collection of new tracks that were produced between late 2020 and early 2021. This 25-track album is another obvious thematic tribute, only this time he chose to pay homage to the writing of the socialist revolutionary Karl Marx. Every song title is a nod to the German philosopher's economic and political theory. Even the album cover borrows directly from Marx, re-adapting the original cover of the 1848 pamphlet entitled 'The Communist Manifesto'.

This album, as with the last, relies heavily on the sounds of classic Electro machines like Mono/Poly, MS-20, SH-101, Jupiter-8, Juno-106, SH-2, System 100, Juno 60, JX-3P, TB-303, Polysix, TR-606, OB-8, TR-808, ARP Odyssey, as well as some contemporary additions to his studio like Hydrasynth, System 8, Novation Peak, Minilogue, SE-02, and Microkorg.

Andy Toth casts a long shadow in the Detroit scene. From being co-founder of the Detroit Grand Pubahs to working as an engineer and mixer, he’s worked on so many records that you know but in his egoless way, didn’t know he was part of. Being the co-author of “Sandwiches” took him around the world, but more importantly it was the hold music for Mudgie’s, a legendary Detroit Deli run by another long standing denizen of the Detroit underground, Greg Mudge. Greg Mudge was a true pillar of our techno community in Detroit, from showing us the venue for the first leaky roof No Way Back, to throwing his own events and supporting great people. One of those people was Andy Toth, who he was constantly pressuring to release his music, and this became a major theme of Greg Mudge’s memorial.  When Greg suddenly passed last September, some friends came in to DJ his memorial like Derek Plaslaiko. When it was Andy Toth’s turn he played only his own productions and we were all just so blown away. Mudgie was always asking Andy “what’s up with those tracks?” And this record is the answer,  a testament to that thought, and to the deeply layered and detailed work of Andy Toth. Andy has created a uniquely dense Detroit Sci Fi trip through sound, with elements of acid, electro, techno that result in an advanced and mature adventure in sound, reflecting his roots in the Detroit scene, but pushing it into new hypnotic futures, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Seasoned heads may already be aware of dynArec. The project of one Chris Kalera, dynArec has been a force in the electro underground for more than two decades at this point, releasing numerous records and helming the Vaporwave label to boot. He has marked himself out as a purveyor of top-quality machine-funk during his career, a producer who runs with the spirit of Detroit to craft club traxx of wicked intensity.

After a period of relative quiet in the late 2010s, Kalera has roared back into action recently, with a run of releases emerging in 2021 and 2022 across labels including Cultivated Electronics, Superluminal and Umwelt’s New Flesh. Now the Vaporwave Records founder takes his Central Processing Unit bow with the Force In The Sum EP, and his hard-hitting electro style is immediately at home on the Sheffield imprint.

Force In The Sum commences with ‘A Dispatching Role’, a track where eerie vocal snippets and delay-drenched anti-melodies cluster around a volatile low-end wobble and crisp 808 snap. It’s equal-parts ominous and invigorating, kind of like the Thom Yorke of ‘Kid A’ times if he’d been granted an audience with Gerald Donald. ‘A Dispatching Role’ is prime slalom music, and the mood carries through to following cut ‘Stabilized’. After a stentorian opening of unerring kick drums and fizzing keys, ‘Stabilized’ soon blooms into a retro-futurist robo-electro joint which comes off like a more textured iteration of Unit Moebius.

Things open up a little more on first B-side ‘Canonical Form’ - at least, they do before the track’s pretty opening flushes are interrupted by a vicious blurting bassline reminiscent of, say, Jensen Interceptor. There are no broken beats here, the track’s unyielding four-on-the-floor thud pushing the joint a little more towards techno mode than the A-side jams. This straight beat remains on Force In The Sum closer ‘Classification Of Elements’, with sputtering hi-hats playing off the groovy pings of the synths to devilishly danceable effect. Slip-sliding saw sounds and spine-tingling, almost ‘X-Files’-esque lead lines enter to up the ante, but the mood shifts after dynArec starts to lace lush chordal stabs and delay-drenched modular runs through the track. All the while, a voice repeats the mantra “what matters is the sound” - and who could deny the truth in this statement?

dynArec’s prolific recent run continues with the four track Central Processing Unit debut Force In The Sum. Tense, expansive and worldbuilding, this is wickedly danceable electro done right. Truly, what matters is the sound.

Review: Illektrolab - Temporal Interference EP - Brokntoys BT75. 

Dystopian “Temporal Interference EP” sees Jason McCracken returning to Brokntoys to deliver a perfect follow up to his highly acclaimed “Paranoid Android” debut EP on the UK imprint back in 2019. As usual, don’t expect a moody journey through lazy atmosphere from the US wizard as this future classic promises you some irresistible robotic movements on the linoleum. The four tracker opens with Sci-Fi monster “Android Humanoid”, a haunting electro song made of pounding beats, intricate sororities and menacing transmissions from outer space. Enhanced by a heavy yet warm bassline, this pure mayhem straight out of a Battlestar Galactica episode is guaranteed to damage any woofers thanks to its Cylon like vocals. Ace! 

The title track coming next signs a tense and scary downtempo cut. Succeeding to Rastafarian voices, low infra bass mixed with bubbling distortions mute the tune into a pure electro Ravey anthem, gloomy as Hell. You’ll be doomed! Merciless killing machinery “In The Tube” on the flipside goes deeper into the realm, exploring the dark, hostile and sinusoidal meanders of your mind. Hammering 808 rhythm combined with insidious analogical madness bring to this percussive slaughter another spatial dimension. Top notch! Last but not the least, dense “Say Robot” concludes the EP with an unexpected groovy approach, showcasing unique modulations and filtering techniques over a much anticipating hit. Available in both vinyl and digital formats, this must have EP serves up a relentless sonic rampage in ILLEKTROLAB’s typical signature made of low frequencies and cold distortions. Save your copy while you can as the 12” appears to be strictly limited.

Christian Kroupa, aka Alleged Witches, and LCN (Le Chocolate Noir) combine to launch new imprint KRI with their expansive ‘Worlds Connect’ EP, accompanied by a remix from Alessandro Adriani.
A new imprint hailing from Ljublijana, Slovenia, KRI aims to capture the lost futures of EBM, electro and nu-wave from the 80s while pairing them with future-focused productions of the now. Named after post-punk group Otroci Socializma, the label ran by local DJs and promoters Schrauff & Lavka will showcase records enjoyed both in the club and at home, while re-issuing obscure and timeless records alongside fresh material from producers across the globe. The first instalment welcomes a well-crafted journey and debut collaboration between Christian Kroupa, arriving off his LP on Natural Sciences under his Alleged Witches alias, and Return to Disorder and L.I.E.S. alumnus LCN (aka Le Chocolate Noir), with the two producers serving up their eclectic ‘World’s Connect’ EP - backed by a remix from Mannequin boss Alessandro Adriani. Opening production ‘The Quest’ welcomes a futuristic electro ride through warped vocals and resonant synths to set the tone, before Alessandro Adriani’s take on the track dives into darker, murkier territories as he serves up a powerful acid-flecked remix. On the flip, ‘The Hate That You Preach’ continues the dystopian feel with a chuggy production guided by vocal echoes, while ‘Electro City Express’ takes cues from its title with a surging, sweeping journey through cinematic synths. B3 ‘Contraint Attached’ rounds out the vinyl offering with a dark yet immersive and absorbing tumble through post-punk, EDM and synth-wave influences for an intoxicating trip. The album was a masterful blend of electro and sci-fi soundscapes, showcasing Finlow's unique style and production prowess, which took the listener on a journey through a futuristic world of machines and technology. It ranks as one of the finest electro records of the early noughties. Fast-forward to 2023 and Sync 24's Cultivated Electronics label is proud to present 'Mr Machine PT 2'. Like its predecessor, the new album is filled with intricate synth melodies, driving rhythms, and pulsating basslines, all perfectly balanced to create an immersive listening experience.
