Boredom in recovery is a major threat for relapse, often people feel secure say I thought I’d done enough return home to environments that are highly stimulating yet people feel bored.  With emotions running high and facing old lives it’s not long before things can take a turn for the worst why; what is boredom? How can you control boredom and how can you watch-out for signs that boredom is creeping in. Often people that have used will have affected the natural dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine is important in our survival it is our reward system, in addiction people’s abuse of substances effects how we reward ourselves naturally, people get gratification quickly. Dopamine from evolution is involved in many functions such as motricity (motor impulse which sends messages along a nerve), attentiveness, motivation, learning and memorisation. So going home to face change and deal with the routine of a recovery plan let alone accept recovery can seem overwhelming and boring. Minds wonder to past life memories or jump to the future instead of staying in the here and now and making changes to situations to make recovery enjoyable. 
People often confuse feelings of being relaxed with boredom, to feel bored there are a few steps beyond relaxing that has to happen. Boredom typically occurs when people have trouble focusing their attention and they believe the reason for this difficulty is in their environment.
