A preview of the new Après Compilation out 28 December 2009 digitally and as a limited edition CD.

For the last three years Future Classic has been hosting a laidback Sunday afternoon event called Après (of course this translates for “after” in French) at the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. A BBQ, friendly bar staff and turntables on the balcony in the sunshine have set the scene for these under-the-radar sessions that give guests (always performing unannounced) the chance to play more diverse sets than they would in the club. 

To give you an idea of the sound, guests have so far have included Brennan Green, Joakim, Mock & Toof, Lovefingers, Aeroplane, Canyons, Jamie Lloyd, Padded Cell, Idjut Boys, Foolish Felix, Todd Terje, Sidwho?, Loin Brothers, Jazzanova, Karsten John, Jimi Polar, Marcus Worgull, The Revenge, Yam Who?, Peret Mako, Arto Mwambé, Move D, Roland Appel, Dave Aju, Trus' Me, Jacques Renault, Will Saul & Woolfy to name a few with residents Nathan McLay and Chad Gillard.

This compilation brings together selected music from the four 12 inch vinyl releases, plus 2 previously unreleased exclusives thrown in for good measure. The compilation begins with one of these debuts, a sunshine filled nylon string slice of balearica from American Tom Croose’s Worst Friends project. Mario Basanov’s ‘Do You Remember?’ and Touch Sensitive’s modern Italo classic ‘Body Stop’ follows before we dive into the early Hot Chip sounding indie disco of Melbourne’s Clubfeet – ‘Edge of Extreme’s’ being a tune that has led to vocal requests from all corners of the globe. From here we shift down a gear with Pink Frost’s remix of Todd Sparrow, a haunting trajectory into the sunset stratosphere, and the Aussie muscle-disco of Sidwho? (also a member of The Swiss and Empire of the Sun) and the Loin Brothers ‘Heavy Helmet’. Toby Tobias claims the “tour bus disco” sound with his swinging number ‘Azul Blue’ and we finish with a swirling slo-mo cosmic exclusive from UK duo Outmode and the vocal ease of Jamie Lloyd and his lovely tune ‘The Wolf’s Sun’.

Prepare to enter the Sombrero Galaxy. "Journey To The Centre Of The Sun", the debut release from Lovefingers' highly anticipated imprint ESP Institute, is a collaborative effort from Londoner Jonny Nash (Discossession, Crue-L) and Dutchman Tako Reyenga (Ambassadors Reception, Salon Des Amateurs). "Journey To The Centre Of The Sun" is a dive into a moody, visceral and ethereal headspace brought to life through shimmering synthesizers, swirling guitars and a chugging bassline coupled with live percussion, clearly setting the bar higher than the bulk of contemporary electronic music. On the B-side, The Stallions (Lovefingers and Lee Douglas) reinterpret the track with optimism, nicely complimenting the original with a light and cloudy yet driving house version. This is the music of dreams.

Following last years acclaimed Curse of Soft Rocks album, we're invited to revisit said masterpiece from an alternative entry — a robust compilation of remixes. The tracklisting follows its predecessor verbatim, however every track is re-contextualized so wildly that we're left with a beautifully obtuse yet complimentary rendering. The personnel employed vary in style and technique drastically, but such is the ethos of Soft Rocks, and furthermore the ESP Institute. At the end of the day, we implore you to shut up and listen.

Phonica Special Editions follow up their inaugural release with an EP featuring three
remixes of singer, producer and Toronto native, Sandro Perri. Sandro has released more
than a dozen solo and collaborative records under his given name as well as under the
Polmo Polpo & Glissandro 70 monikers, mainly on Canadian cult imprint Constellation.

“Love & Light / The Drums Remixes” features reworks from Worst friends Tom Croose
and Slow Hands. Fresh from his recent outing on Resista, Tom Croose is kept busy with
not one, but two remixes of mr Perri. First up and taking up the whole of side A, “Love &
Light” – originally on 2011’s “Impossible Spaces” – gets a subtle electronic re-rub with
restrained electronic flourishes that gently complement the original's organic, ethereal
sound – a weirdly captivating, mystical trip! All that, while getting boosted from a
criminally short three and a half minutes to a more respectable nine plus…

Next up is Slow Hands, Tom Croose’s partner in Worst Friends who has released on
Wolf+Lamb. He takes “The Drums” (a track from Sandro’s debut album “Tiny Mirrors”) to
places where it’s never been before. by re-imagining the song into a breezy summer
anthem where old school electric piano stabs, handclaps and a general feel-good vibes
take centre stage.

Rounding off this excellent remix 12” we have Tom Croose again, who returns for
another version of “The Drums” and harmoniously marries synth riffs and a laid back
groove with Sandro’s signature contemplative vocal, rounding off this excellent remix
package in style.

Probably my favourite tune on the compilation..or at least the one that will likely linger for me the longest. Worst Friends are made up of Slow Hands from the Wolf & Lamb crew outta NYC and Tom Croose from surfside LA. When chillin with the latter in LA last year i was playing some tunes to Mr Croose who, if you haven't checked his stuff already, makes exceptional laidback haze induced space float. Together they turned this new wave Aussie surf jam into a classic you'd expect at the tail end of your favourite Spike Jonze skateboard flick. FREE DOWNLOAD - Gung Ho - Twin Rays (Worst Friends Remix)

Michael Ozone, the character who’s just dropped his debut offering for the ESP Institute this July, is back with a remixed version of his jungle-tuff "Perfect Systems" EP. On Side A, Steve Summers (a name that’s been up in your face over the last year, and one of the key figures in our cousin’s L.I.E.S. camp) has taken Perfect Systems for an imperfect ride, jacking it up as expected while keeping the somewhat sinister mood of the original. On the flip, Young Marco (who has become quite a resident at the ESP Institute) strips down Hetrotopia to its core, letting you realize how a well-programmed track can maintain its melodic and hypnotic sense, even when all that’s left is percussion.

Electronic producer Flako resides in London and has previously called Berlin and Chile home, but the lead track from his forthcoming Eclosure 12″ sounds as if it emerged from across the pond– specifically, from the burbling wonkiness of Los Angeles’ Flying Lotus-fronted Brainfeeder beat crew. Oftentimes, the sound that comes from Brainfeeder artists can resemble something of a locked groove, but “Honey Drips” opens up beautifully, dissolving into a soup of keyboard runs and tangled vocals. Phonica Records return with release no.6, that features three spellbinding remixes of a track that’s a classic around these parts… 

Originally released in 1994, Bob Holroyd’s effervescent, career-defining anthem "African Drug" was included on both Francois K’s 'Essential Mix' and Coldcut’s 'Journeys By DJ: Coldcut' - 70 Minutes Of Madness. So when Bob walked through our shop’s doors one day, we couldn’t resist asking to license the track and give it a new lease of life with two breathtaking remixes. And that’s exactly what we did. 

The first remix comes from the consistently trailblazing Four Tet. Clocking in at just under 12 minutes, there’s only one word to describe it – epic. Using the African samples of the original, Four Tet builds a complex, glockenspiel-esque melody that slowly morphs into a feast of hypnotic percussion, pulsating sub-bass and dizzying, psychedelic FX. Following a brief remission around the halfway mark, the melody returns, unspooling into a climactic freak-out that’s simply classic Four Tet. 

On the flipside we have rising star of T.Williams – who also gave us the first Local Action release – re-tooling "African Drug" for more leftfield dancefloors. An absorbing, off-kilter percussive intro gradually gives way to a heavy yet streamlined 4/4 groove. Ultra-modern but mindful of the source material’s timeless appeal, this is a raw, powerful version with ‘secret weapon’ written all over it.
