This is a workshop recording of the Prologue from The Covenant.  The Covenant is a chamber opera with the libretto by Midori Marsh and music by my self.  Thank-you to the performers who participated in this.

The Covenant, Prologue

I had the pleasure of writing "Disintegrate" for Array Music's 2019 Young Composer's Workshop.  During the month of May, I worked with the Array ensemble and composer mentor Linda Catlin Smith to create this piece.  It was performed at the Young Composer's Workshop Concert on May 25, 2019 with musicians: Colleen Cook, bass clarinet, Stephen Clarke, piano, David Schotzko, vibraphone, Bryan Holt, cello and Rick Sacks, conductor.  Thank-you to everyone involved in this experience!
Disintegrate 

Program Notes

Disintegrate is written for Array’s 2019 Young Composer’s Workshop.  In an effort to experiment with form, the piece begins with a fuller texture and slowly thins out as it goes on.  I am very moved by Hildegard von Bingen’s music, who was a composer in the Eleventh century.  Her melodies are beautiful and evocative and have always been a large influence in my music.  In Disintegrate, I tried to channel Hildegard’s spirit of beautiful, evocative melodies into the cello part.  While it isn’t musically similar to Hildegard’s music, I aimed to capture simplistic beauty in a solo melody.  I would like to thank Array for the opportunity to participate in the 2019 workshop, this experience was truly one of a kind and I feel very fortunate to have been able to learn from the musicians and composer mentor, Linda Catlin Smith.  It has been a fantastic month of growth in my composition practice.

Disintegrate

forget me (not)

When my season passes, forget me not.
When my periwinkle presence is quiet and shaded,
forget me not.

Forget me not when her vibrance challenges the sun and blossoms;
a daffodil beneath your soiled hands.

Forget me not when she lies in sheets that still hold my scent, 
lingering and pastel presence.

And while another seasons passes, and colours fade, 
roots will remain grounded.
So please-
forget me not.

forget me (not)

Arches in the Undercurrent is a piece for solo piano.  It explores harmonics, stillness and is shaped by a simple harmonic language.  It has the feeling of soft rocking waves, and alludes to the natural movement of water.  Arches in the Undercurrent was performed January 17th 2020 and written for the Piano Lunaire's Inaugural Composer's Symposium.  Performed by Stephanie Chua and audio by Varey Sound.

Known for her ethereal vocals and thoughtful approach to sound, Dylann Miller is a composer for media and stage and a singer/songwriter presently based in Toronto, ON. 

Her work as a composer includes scores for a variety of media such as documentaries, animation, drama and music for video games. Dylann has a passion for creating new and unusual sounds, incorporating many of her own vocals and customized instruments into her scores, resulting in fresh, dynamic pieces. As a singer, Dylann is well versed in a variety of extended techniques and loves to develop unique sound worlds.   

Her work has strong roots in the Kitchener-Waterloo region where her music has been performed by ensembles including the Wilfrid Laurier’s Concert Choir, Laurier Singers, and The Maureen Forrester Singers. In June 2018, her LGBT+ focused opera, The Covenant premiered in Waterloo and Cambridge.

Her work has been recognized by awards from Arcady’s Young Composer Competition (2017), the SOCAN Foundation (2016); and participation in the 2020 Piano Lunaire Composer’s Symposium, the 2019 Toronto Creative Music Lab (2019) and the 2018 Waterloo Region Contemporary Music Sessions.

During her time as a music composition major at Wilfred Laurier University, she served on the board of the Open Ears Festival as a student liaison (2017-2018).  Following the end of her undergraduate degree, Dylann embraced opportunities as a freelance artist before completing post-graduate studies at Sheridan College (2020-2021) in the Music Scoring for Screen and Stage program.
